Get away from it all and ascend a road less traveled to the rustic charm of Sunshine Alley. This comfortable, serene home sits 800 feet above Jade Cove and Sand Dollar Beach, nestled in the heart of Big Sur's spectacular South Coast in the Los Padres National Forest.
This newly remodeled, 1500-square-foot cedar home is perched at the edge of a redwood forest, just a mile up Plaskett Ridge Road from Highway One. Breathtaking ocean views stretch from Cape San Martin in the south to Point Sur in the north. Spectacular vistas can be enjoyed from almost every room, including Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove, Pacific Valley and Cone Peak. After breathtaking sunsets, take in awesome, clear views of the star-studded heavens.
Hike from the property on a private trail to a spectacular viewing platform 300 vertical feet above the home. Explore nearby Forest Service trails, or travel four miles up the road through oak forest and open chaparral to experience a top-of-the-world feeling.
Down at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, stroll along bluff trails above Jade Cove and Sand Dollar Beach. Or walk down easy paths to the beach to greet the surf and perhaps some sea lions. Guidebooks in our library can help you decide which paths you travel, from seashore to mountaintop.
Expand your vacation horizons south with trips to San Simeon and the fabled Hearst Castle, just 45 minutes south, or another 10 minutes to the quaint, artsy town of Cambria. To the north, it?s about 1-1/2 hours to the restaurants, galleries and shops of Carmel-by-the-Sea, with many interesting stops along the way, such as the vista and waterfall at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, the more developed but still-funky Big Sur Village, spectacular Bixby Creek Bridge, and Point Lobos State Reserve.
Back at Sunshine Alley, comfort awaits.
Upstairs, cathedral ceilings are complemented by a hardwood floor and lovely tile work.
The living room features a wood stove, a dining table, and expansive views through picture windows. Sliding doors from the living room and bedroom open to a deck that stretches the length of the house and wraps around the north side. The bedroom looks out to the sea, and restful sleep awaits you in the queen-size, Hotel Collection bed with plush, pillow-top mattress and down comforter. The adjacent full bath has an oversized tub and shower, premium toiletries, and linen closet with extra towels and bedding. The kitchen includes a gas stove, microwave oven, and refrigerator, as well as cooking and eating utensils, plus complementary coffee, tea, spices and other kitchen supplies. Laundry service is available upon request.
Downstairs offers another queen-size, deluxe bed and adjacent bathroom, with sliding glass doors opening from the sleeping area to a lawn, fir and oak trees, and garden.
A big, native-stone fireplace can be put to good use as you curl up in one of the oversized chairs to read, enjoy DVDs (yours or ours) on the flat-screen TV with surround sound, or listen to your music CDs (bring your iPod), or read something from our collection of books about the local and natural history of Big Sur.
As a green property, Sunshine Alley strives to minimize its carbon footprint. Electricity is generated from a solar-power system, supplemented as necessary by a propane generator. A land-line phone upstairs can be used with your calling card. Cellphone service can be iffy, so don't count on it.
The romance, serenity and beauty of Sunshine Alley lies just 261 miles (4-1/2 hours drive) from LAX, and 163 miles (3-1/2 hours) from SFO. Four restaurants and two convenience stores are within a half-hour drive, but we recommend that you bring your own groceries for best selection and better price.
Sunshine Alley is open year-round.
