East of Waterville
the tiny villages of caherdaniel and castlecove have much to offer the visitor and are on the ring of kerry road between waterville and sneem. both villages are located on the shores of derrynane bay which gives its name to the surrounding area. the bay with its beautiful blue flag beach is a renowned certre for all types of water sports - swimming, diving, kayaking, canoeing, surfing, water-sking, wakeboarding, and of course sailing. all available in the safe enclosed harbour of derrynane. other very popular activities available in the area include horse-riding, sea angling, golfing and hill walking. the area is rich in cultural history too with derrynane house and national park home of Daniel O connell The Liberator1775-1847) Staigue Fort at Castlecove, probably Irelands finest example of a stone fort and of course the old abbey.
The world famous Skellig islands ar e a short boat trip from waterville. Skellig Michael is known throughout the world of archaeology as the site of a well preserved monastic ;outpost of the early christian period - now designated a world heritage site. small Skellig is equally renowned in matters of onithology as the home of some 27,000 pairs of gannets - the second largest colony of such seabirds in the world
