Altea:
Because of its privileged location and brightness, ‘a village roasted by the sun’, according to Gabriel Miro; Altea has always attracted many bohemians. Artists, painters, sculptors and writers of many nationalities have been drawn to the town, making their home here and benefiting from the inspiration they receive from its unique setting. They in turn, have contributed to its rich cultural life, and the official title, ‘Cultural Capital of the Valencia Region’, has been bestowed on Altea. The University of Culture and Fine Arts is adjacent to the old town, and now attracts a whole new generation of artists. The University has a Theatre of Performing Arts, where distinguished ensembles appear regularly. Details of forthcoming events are available from the University. In support of its mantle as Cultural Capital, Altea is also a town with a special taste for antiques and hand-crafted goods.
