About Eriko Navratil

Lived in Torrance since the 1970's, grew up rollerskating to the beach, but moved to Japan during the 80s and traveled all over Asia, came back to live in Redondo Beach in the 90s. I play beach volleyball every Sunday at Hermosa Beach and enjoy the beach life to the fullest with my husband and 2 young children. I want as many people as possible to experience this friendly beach community and hope to that guests go home feeling like the cottage is their second home.

Eriko Navratil purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Eriko Navratil chose Redondo Beach

It is on a beautiful historic street with homes from the early 1900's this property is a 1908 authentic craftsman home with original wood floors, claw foot tub and wavy glass windows. It's a charming antique home that is in the most convenient location, with restaurants and supermarkets just one block away. The nearest breakfast diner just 4 homes away is a historic landmark of Redondo Beach called Eat at Joe's. Guests can walk to the beach and pier and it's a short drive to Disneyland, Hollywood and all the famous site seeing places in LA, and just 15-20 minutes from the airport to the north and 15-20 minutes to beautiful golf courses in Palos Verdes to the south.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is perfect for families with small children, with everything from diaper changer/crib/booster chairs and toys and books for little ones, yet once those are put away in the closets, the cottage is a romantic cozy home for couples to snuggle by the fireplace, or for business people to work on the computer. It's so quiet we have writers that come and work on novels, and repeat guests who visit each year for medical reasons because it is so comfortable.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Frank and Eriko,

What a delightful and fun week, we have been blessed to enjoy here at this charming and welcoming "home away from home"! The 6 of us including a 4 year old and 7 month old baby, travelled from N. CA., to spent Thanksgiving week with family who live in Torrance. Having our own most convenient and homey space helped our Torrance family (Ages 82, 54 and 18) to feel less overwhelmed and stressed. Our Thanksgiving was truly the best ever!!! Much laughter many lovely memories , how grateful we are!! We just wish we could stay longer!

Blessings to you and your family during the beautiful upcoming Holiday Season and to all those fortunate enough to find and rent in this "little piece of heaven" :)

Holiday hugs and Appreciation from us all!!

Cal Beach Cottage is indeed a family friendly place to stay! Our grandson had the best 4 year old birthday a little boy could ever have. The parks, beaches, activities so close made it very special- even the rain seems to be waiting for us to leave. :)

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The Beach Cottage was perfect for our recent stay to California. We have an almost four year old and a one year old and the house was perfect for children! There is a fenced in outdoor area, a massive Disney movie collection as well as toys for your little ones.

My husband loved the flat screen with lots of speciality channels as well as a DVR. The owners also provided us with a laptop to use to connect to their wireless network! He also loved the juicer-the owners brought us by a bag of the most delicious oranges I'd ever tasted our first night and we had fresh squeezed oj every morning! I loved the fact that the location was perfect. The cottage is on a cute, safe street super close to amenities. You can easily walk to the Redondo Pier, playground at Veteran's park and lots of shopping and restaurants are right around the corner. It is super close to LAX and was an easy drive to Palos Verdes (we were visiting family there) as well as Disneyland and other attractions.

I can't say enough about the owners. They are professional, welcoming and just really interesting people. I wish I could've had them for neighbors forever.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your detailed review. It was so nice having the kids play together, thank you for all the crafts you shared, we made some puppets after you left :) We really enjoyed your company and hope to keep in touch. We wish your family in PV well. You are a very sweet family and we're very glad you found our cottage. We hope to see you again some day.

Cosy little cottage with tons of amenities

We had a party of 3 adults and 2 young kids. The main aim of our vacation was to spend lots of time on the beach, and this property did not disappoint! It was well stocked with everything you could need for a day at the beach. It had beach towels, chairs, umbrella, and even sand toys for the kids.

It's well stocked with a full kitchen. We cooked everyday and never found ourselves lacking in terms of kitchen equipment or utensils/cutlery. The TV was great, and it had a lot of channels to choose from when we had some down time.

We loved chilling on the front porch and the kids loved the kids books and toys in the 2nd bedroom. I'm glad we didn't have to bring a bunch of our own toys and books!

We had one major and a few minor issues with the home (it is over 100 years old, after all), but nothing that wasn't addressed promptly by the owners. They are very friendly and responsive. Thank you Eriko and Frank for a great stay at the Cal Beach Cottage!

Our disappointment in this vacation rental was monumental. Not even clean, it was dark, dreary and depressing. Many things did not even work properly; i.e dishwasher, dresser drawers, light bulbs. One of the most important things was it did not even have enough light for reading. The view out the back was of old cars and junk. We had to really suck it up to even stay the entire week, but had plans with our kids.

Owner's Response: We are surprised you were so unhappy, we visited you to address each issue, delivered everything you requested and addressed each complaint. I don't like to sound like I'm making excuses, but please let me explain. We made a few visits to repair the dishwasher, getting the parts rushed at a very expensive shipping rate, and it did run properly once after repair so we weren't ready to throw it out and rush to get a new one for you and we did fix it, that was bad timing it broke when you used it. We are also sorry you had bad timing, the renters in the rear started moving out and we had also moved out a couple weekends prior, so there were lots of boxes and things that needed to be taken out of storage, and we do apologize for that, we have no control over the renter's move date. The old truck is actually a rare historic Toyota Land Cruiser, there's only one truck, the other Ford pick up was being used to help move things to get the moves done faster, there is nothing in the back behind the property now, except for the shed and there's a new bamboo fence enclosure for the bikes and it's clean. All the boxes have been moved as of Sunday. The house cleaning crew I had before moved and I have been trying to train this new staff, I was not happy with the work myself, and they do apologize for not dusting behind the furniture, they did move everything and wiped all the dust from the back of the appliances. I also copied and forwarded your review so they understand that this should never happen again. I promise if I find any disappointing dust, stickiness, or anything I will get another cleaning crew. These people took over the last business this summer and I wanted to give them a chance. The house is very bright with the blinds open, there are many windows and we have never had any complaints about the lighting. The light bulbs are LED or florescent lights to conserve energy and they take just a minute to get bright, they don't react like regular bulbs, and we did leave regular bulbs with you to change them out right away. We also called TimeWarneCable to get the digital adapter for the analog TV, no one told us the TV was no longer compatible with digital and was not working, we addressed that the first day, but the adapter took a few days for delivery. We hope you understand we go above and beyond to address the needs of our guests, and hope you will give us some credit for all the visits and repairing things as quickly as we possibly could.

Relaxing Home Away Home

Our family (2 adults and 3 kids) had a great time in Redondo Beach. Our stay at this beach cottage was perfect. It's located in a quiet neighborhood, but close enough to walk to the beach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The kids enjoyed the pool table in the back patio, a nice touch. We packed light knowing we had the use of a washer/dryer. This home away from home allowed us to host dinner for family who live in the area. We look forward to another stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the flattering review! It is such a pleasure when guests really get to experience the beach community, we take pride in the city and love the neighborhood, and it's our goal to get as many people to be able to be a neighbor here. We've had guests fall in love with the area and are sending their son to move around here for college so they can visit more often! Thank you for sharing your review, we hope you can visit again :) Enjoy the rest of the summer! Sincerely, Frank and Eriko

Perfect getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

We just arrived home and are missing our home away from home, perfect accommodations for 2 adults and 4 children. We walked to the pier, Starbucks, and the diner around the corner. Easy access by foot or drive. We were able to visit with Eriko, Frank and their kids and it made for an even more enjoyable time leaving with new friends. They were always available and more then helpful in anything we needed...even supplying an appliance cord for a perfect movie night.....we had barely left the drive before the kids were asking when we would be coming back!! Hopefully soon...Thanks for a wonderful getaway!!!

Thank you for everything!

Cal Beach Cottage is located in South Redondo Beach just minutes from the middle of Redondo Pier. A wide sand beach starts below the bluffs of Palos Verdes in the south (after Torrance Beach) and carries north to the Redondo Pier. A paved path, called The Strand runs from Torrance through South Redondo, north to Santa Monica. A typical day on this path will see thousands of people on foot, bicycle, skateboard, roller-blade, wheelchair and stroller enjoying the sun and surf. The continuous path is broken only by the massive Redondo Beach King Harbor Marina and Pier complex, where it veers away from water and onto dedicated lanes of surface streets for about a mile before again turning to the ocean in Hermosa Beach. Continuing north from Manhattan Beach, this path stretches well into Marina Del Rey and beyond with few breaks.

Our cottage is 20 minutes South of LAX Airport and 45 minutes to Disneyland by car. But the best thing is you can walk to stores, restaurants, bars and pier/beach!

Other Activities: Surfing, fishing, sailing, whale watching, beach volleyball, golf, horseback riding...

Golf: Palos Verdes is just a 20 minute drive away, there are many golf courses in this area.

Terranea Resort Golf Course

Trump National Golf Course

Los Verdes Golf Course

Ski: The local mountains are 2-3 hours away, depending on traffic... Bear Summit, Snow Valley are great for families. You can be at the beach surfing or playing volleyball and be skiing or snowboarding the next day!
