About Deborah Pattin

My family has owned this waterfront cottage since 1982. We lived there full time for 11 years before building a larger house to accommodate out growing (now grown) children. We continue to vacation at the cottage, hold family gatherings, or just go over for a walk on the beach or for a outing in the boat. We live not far away from the cottage so if you need anything while you are there, have questions, need directions or referrals, etc., we are usually nearby to be of assistance. The cottage is set up like a home and you will be quite comfortable there.

Deborah Pattin purchased this cottage in 1982

Why Deborah Pattin chose Olympia

We fell in love with the property the minute we first saw it in June 1982. The cottage is nestled at the base of a hill on an acre of forested land. The road to the property is a windy country road that hugs a forested hillside. The second you drive onto the road, you feel the cooler temperature, smell the forest and the water. You give a relaxing sigh. Ah, relaxation. From the decks of the cottage, you are only 13 feet from the shore edge and you can watch the tides come in and out, and view the wildlife: deer, seal, blue heron and other sea birds, salmon, river otters and more. A wonderful place to relax.

What makes this cottage unique

Close to town but it feels like you are miles away. You can be downtown or at the State Capitol in 10 minutes, to The Evergreen State College in 5 minutes or less, and to Hwy 101 or Interstate 5 within 5 minutes, as well as to major grocery stores, shopping centers, service stations, movie and live theatres, pubs, restaurants, churches, museums, medical offices and the hospitals within minutes. But it feels like you are out in the country, in a quite, private retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were snug as bugs in a rug during the snow storm in February. It was great to have the cozy cabin to return to each evening during our 5 weeks on the job in Olympia.

We had a wonderful stay. The beautiful view, many windows and decks were all enjoyed. The home is comfortable and is so well stocked and equipped. Debby does such a terrific job of caring for her guests. Thank you!

Charming little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Came into town with my family of 3 to get a feel for Olympia and to decide if we wanted to relocate to the area. We LOVED our time at the cottage. It was cozy and had everything we needed to feel right at home. Every morning I sat with my cup of coffee (Olympia Roasting Co is GOOD stuff people) and watched the sun come up over the water. Made my heart happy. The kiddo enjoyed running around the beach at low tide and thought the streams of water being shot in the air by clams was the funniest thing ever! If we need a place to stay before we move we will def book here again!

I really enjoyed the quantness and location of the cottage. We had a few issues with the cottage which the owner rectified as soon as she was notified of them. The house was extremely clean and I would recommend that anyone stay here.

Beautiful, hand-crafted little cottage.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was all that was advertised and more. The wrap-around deck, the privacy, the big windows looking over the bay - wonderful. I was sad that I did not have more time to just enjoy the space, but we traveled all over the peninsula, from Port Angeles to the Ho Rainforest. I would have given it a 5 star, but the master bed needs to be replaced and there is a rather sour smell in the bathroom. I would come back, and I would recommend this home to any traveler who likes authenticity and a place that isn't trying to be a fancy hotel, but is a home away from home. The owners go out of their way to provide all the little things. We left our dog one day, and she barked so much that the neighbors complained; Debby come by and gave her a walk. Also, I had a business package hand delivered by owners. Where on earth can you get that kind of hospitality?

Owner's Response: I was happy to walk the dog and try to calm her down. Also, it was a pleasure for Bob and I to meet your brother and spend time talking to him re. art, wood working, craftsmanship, etc. I am sorry that you weren't satisfied with the master bed. It is exactly the same bed that my husband and I have, purchased on the same date from the same furniture store. There haven't been any other concerns voiced about it. When the current guest checks out on Oct. 11th, we will go over and personally inspect. Also, we will inspect the bathroom. I had not heard that there was any issue there. The cottage was originally build in the 1940's but we have completely remodeled with new plumbing, wiring, bath fixtures, flooring, etc. I will inspect the bath and try to determine what the issue may be. Hope all is well in Nevada (and Utah) and that you get the chance to make another visit to the cool, green northwest.

Beautiful Hideaway ,

My husband and I spent a beautiful month relaxing in Deborah's home. The view of the Sound is fantastic and we enjoyed watching the tide roll in and out. The house is located in a rain forest with visits from deer. Deborah is wonderful and responded to our needs. We look forward to our return next year.

an idyllic stay on the shores of Puget Sound

  • 5 of 5

The beach cottage on Butler's Cove was perfectly described in the listings. Deborah was incredibly helpful in getting our stay organized for a great start. Tucked into a cove just to the West of Olympia, the cottage was a perfect home for our 3 generation touring family while in Olympia. Proximity to Olympia downtown was ideal. In just a few minutes we were at the doors of the Hands On Olympia Museum. 2 year old Jasmine was enthralled and she could have spent our entire three days exploring this wonderful extended play space. At 5 pm when the Museum closed, downtown Olympia beckoned and the enjoyable restaurants, shops and art of the city made it a nice early evening or midday place to explore with Jasmine or a great evening place to go with one generation babysitting Jasmine at the cottage while another went into the city. Music a the Washington Center for the Arts was particularly enjoyed. The daytime also allowed for boating on Puget Sound. We chose the canoe which is kept in the garage and paddled out into the Sound on two occasions with Jasmine in the middle seat. Deborah was particularly helpful in making sure we had a life vest of the correct size for a two year old and by day two Jasmine was happily able to understand the ways to ride safely in a canoe. This was a great experience for us since this was her first time in a canoe and as avid canners it was great to have her adjust so well to this novel environment. Shopping is easy and convenient within a 5 to 8 minute drive from the cottage, whether we went to the local food coop which is a really great place to shop or on a later evening run to Safeway for some diapers. All in all it was great stay, and the experience of waking up in the morning with Puget Sound below you is one I strongly recommend.

Cottage is located on Butler Cove, a tidal saltwater cove off Budd Bay in south Puget Sound.
