I grew up in South Florida and when I first arrived to Puerto Vallarta in 2005, it seemed I'd gone back in time because it felt like the slow and easy pace of Florida in the early 1970's.

I've come to love Puerto Vallarta very much and have witnessed a great deal of growth. The new marina, shopping mall, recently the new pier and so much more is planned for Puerto Vallarta, making this a first class vacation destination spot as well as the number one place to retire. There are many expats who live here full or part time. I am often here in Puerto Vallarta and may occasionally be available to meet guests, either myself or my property manager and team. This personal service makes all the difference between staying in an anonymous hotel or condo or staying on with folks who treat you truly as friends who have come to stay.

Lupita Hernandez, Manager purchased this house in 2006

Casa Marfil is centrally located right in front of the Rio Cuale Island which is truly the only green space in the city of Puerto Vallarta. We are minutes walk from the Malecon, restaurants and beaches. The Rio Cuale and the nature that live around the river, the iguana, the parrot, the frogs all combine to make Casa Marfil and the area where we are located a veritable oasis in the middle of the city.

Casa Marfil was built and is one of the oldest homes in Puerto Vallarta, the street we are on has some of the most unique and authentically Mexican homes in the city. With an eye to detail and convenience, we've kept the authentic Mexican casa feel and combined it with the convenience of modern living, appliances like dishwasher and kitchen appliances that are new all work to feel like First World convenience with Old World Charm.

Casa Marfil for a month!

  • 4 of 5
Our stay at Casa Marfil was wonderful. The actual house is beautiful. Laura and Oscar (the caretakers) are wonderful people. We had a lovely time in Puerto Vallarta and in the house. The neighborhood is beautiful- we got to know the owners of the abarrotes (corner store) and several of the neighbors on the street. There is a great little farmers market a few blocks away where we got to know the butcher and several of the vendors. Puerto Vallarta is a magical place. The palapa on the roof of Casa Marfil housed us for many hours as we drew pictures, painted, played games and chased lizards. The porch off the kitchen was another favorite place to sit and watch the crazy gorgeous thunderstorms. The kitchen is awesome- especially because our budget didn't allow for much eating out. The bedrooms are nice- each with their own bathroom. We felt very secure and comfortable there.

Like another reviewer mentioned, we did have a checkout issue. My husband requested that the owner return our complete deposit. There were some house issues that the owner never took care of during our stay- and we thought it would be fair if she returned the complete deposit. To which she responded by accusing my husband of being sexist and eventually digressed to telling us we must have marital problems. At no point was it about the money and if she would have said, "hey, I don't think your troubles are worth $100.00 so meet me in the middle"- or even, "I hear you but I can't afford to give you back the money" we would have been fine with that. But the fact that she resorted to insults and really strange accusations (including an accusation that we broke a really old water pump)- increased my desire to get the money back based on principle. Kudos to her, she did the right thing in the end and returned the full deposit but only after several strange emails. Oh well.

Like I said, the caretakers could not have been better. Definitely shining stars of the trip. I could see how people who were staying for just a week would have a more seamless exit and would give it 5 stars. There was a little headache at the end but it in no way overshadowed our month there.

Owner's Response: The staff at Casa Marfil are a great group of people who work hard to make our guests feel welcome and happy during their stay with us.

There is a booking contract that describes the procedure for the Security Deposit and during the summer months, there is a deposit that is taken for electric usage for ONE MONTH + rentals. The electric usage information is determined by CFE, the electric company. This is done in order to be fair to individual guests so that those who use less or not unduly asked to pay more than those guests who use more electricity.

Upon their arrival, the guest offered less than the prescribed security deposit amount. Casa Marfil staff chose to accept the security deposit in good faith, reminding the guest that the electric usage would be deducted from the deposit, to which they agreed.

Their are many children's books and toys at Casa Marfil that the house provides it's guest to use and enjoy. This guest allowed their children to play with decor and items in the house not considered typical children's toys, much of which can not be recovered or located as the children are quite small and those items have not been found. Decor such as a basket of sea shells, semi-precious stones, fossils, geodes were seen to be strewn about that had been taken from a basket on a high shelf in the kitchen and used by Casa Marfil for decor purposes only.

Casa Marfil does not consider it fair to unduly force a guest to pay for a six year old water pump that serves to make water stream strong for showers and washing. This is considered part of maintenance and Casa Marfil would never ask a guest to pay for something requiring maintenance to be paid by a guest. However, in the course of an individual's stay, it is considered normal procedure to be informed of any equipment that is no longer working well or making undue noise in the strain of its efforts during the time of the rental, so that we might immediately address the concern.

At the end of the month's stay this guest requested their full security deposit back and chose not to pay for their electric usage. After attempting to remind the guest that the booking contract stipulates their acquiescence to honor their part in the agreement, they insisted that they receive their security deposit in whole. Casa Marfil returned the remaining security deposit via Paypal to the guest in order to avoid further unpleasantness and made efforts to salvage the business relationship.

Making great memories!!

  • 5 of 5
This was my first trip to PV and Casa Marfil. The villa was very beautiful! The decor had a Spanish flair complimented by the amazing views from either the kitchen balcony or upper terrace. I would have to say the best part was definitely reuniting with old friends and making some new ones, this was certainly the highlight for me, but the surroundings really helped to make it an all-round wonderful trip! There is nothing like going away and finding the comforts of home with long hot showers, comfortable furniture, and an amazing kitchen for home cooked meals when you felt like it! I also really liked the fact that the villa was so roomy, with four floors to choose from you could easily escape for some alone time if you felt like it. A party of eight could feel very comfortable there. I also, really liked how easy it was to get around in PV. After a few days you picked up on the surrounding areas easily and walking to the markets, restaurants, shops and night life was a breeze. I would highly recommend Casa Marfil for your next PV rental!

Best Vacation EVER!!!

  • 5 of 5
Casa Marfil Puerto Vallarta. It is located within walking distance to the downtown, which has many excellent restaurants and shops to choose from. The house is in a quiet area in Gringo Gulch, we loved to just walk around the area and admire those beautiful homes in the middle of a Mexican town. The house was filled with Mexican ornaments and pictures and made the home feel comforting. Laura the lady that took care of the place was fantastic, very friendly and made it a welcoming stay. We went there to meet a group of people, my sister Laura had booked it to get a bunch of friends together for our birthday. I would recommend Casa Marfil for anyone one wanting a get away with a group, large house with every room having its own bathroom and shower. It was the best vacation ever!!! Thanks again!!!

Renting Beautiful Casa Marfil was a great way to get people together from all over... Friends and Family, some have which I have not seen in 20 years, met for vacation at Casa Marfil. It was was a great place to hangout and socialize as well as a great place to explore. All of the reviews are true and I agree with them whole heartedly. We loved Laura who looked after the place for us and as well Sheryll who is more than willing to provide information about PV to doubly ensure that our stay was a great one!

Thanks so much Sheryll and Laura!!

Incredible, Old charm with all the amenities

  • 5 of 5
Sheryll,

All I can say is wow. Casa Marfil was everything we hoped for and more for our 10 year anniversary. The house was perfect. It had all sorts of charm and we felt like we had stepped back in time only with stainless steel appliances and running water. We had a blast walking on the cobblestone street up to our house everyday. The locals were very friendly and we enjoyed buying glass bottle cokes from the little conveyance shop and talking with the owner. The house is perfectly located and the views were incredible. We loved hanging out on the roof every morning looking out over the Sierra Madre mountains and the ocean. We enjoyed watching the locals across the river live everyday life and we got to watch a man every other morning training pigeons how to fly in unison. We even had a Iguana join us for a beer one evening. Thanks so much for the suggestions we loved going to Sayullita. The Surfing was a blast. We also really enjoyed going to Yelapa by Water taxi. We got to see 4 sea Turtles and it was like stepping back in time in that little village and the waterfall was beautiful. We were the only ones there. We also went through Vallarta Adventures for the whale watching, Snorkeling, and we swam with Sea Lions. They did a great job and there service was really good. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me and for checking up on us. We cannot wait to share your place with our kids when we come to see you again. Soon I hope. I highly recommend Casa Marfill to any one who doesn't want to get caught in a tourist trap , but wants to get out and explore Puerta Vallarta for the beautiful and friendly City it Is.
Thanks Sherryl My best vacation to date.

Warm and spacious home

  • 5 of 5
The listing accurately captures the character and quality of the home. The property owner, Sherryl is extremely helpful and responsive to my many questions. She even volunteered information that proved very helpful to us. Her home has many beautiful and authentic Mexican art pieces which serve to make the experience that much more appealing. The home is located in close proximity to the Romantica Zone and the ocean. Of course, you have to be able to navigate the cobblestone streets and the grade.

If you want to prepare your own meals the home has all the amenities one would need to make meals to your liking. The rooftop palapa has beautiful views of the surrounding areas and is designed for ultimate entertainment and/or relaxation.

This is my first experience staying renting someone's home and of course there was some initial trepidation. Let me assure anyone that is considering this home that the listing and accompanying photos truly and accurately depict the home. Any concerns that you have will be honestly addressed by the owner.

If you are looking for a spacious home that will accommodate 6-7 adults or kids and want something different than the resort experience this is a place one should seriously consider. One proviso: if you are planning on walking to and from town from the home, make sure you bring comfortable shoes. Of course anyone who wants to truly experience the richness of Puerto Vallarta will already have planned to do so.
