Beautiful vacation home; easily equal to 4-star class hotel
First-- I have to make this clear: when I say "4-star hotels," I'm talking REAL hotel class ratings... not reviewer opinion ratings. To put it into perspective, Rockydale equaled the **Presidential Suite** at the 4-star Hotel Marlowe (Cambridge, MA; easily one of the best experiences we've ever had) and was far (FAR!!) superior to the accommodations at the 4-star Le Meridien in Philly. I rated it 5 stars here as an experience rating... not hotel class.
When we arrived, the house was IMMACULATE. I mean SPOTLESSLY clean. Every detail in the home is incredibly well thought out... great design and beautiful furnishings. Just a gorgeous place. All new (looking) utensils and glass/tableware.
My only warning is to be wary of snow and severe temperatures, if they're in the forecast. The radiant heating wasn't quite up to the task one morning, when it was in the low teens overnight. The thermostat was reading 66° when we got up. It was pretty chilly, especially in the bedrooms, but we grabbed some blankets and lit the ventless gas logs. BTW, we didn't notice the house temp during the night AT ALL-- the beds were unbelievably comfortable and cozy. We all slept like rocks. (Seriously, the master bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in).
The other warning is accessibility to the house during snow. I have a front-wheel drive SUV with chunky tires and with several nights of only maybe 3" total accumulation (powdery, not icy, thankfully), I was still able to make it in and out of the property. We never got stuck, but it did make for some "adventurous" excursions. Charlie was super gracious, offering to come pick us up in his 4WD, if we were to get stuck, but thankfully we didn't.
During our snowy weekend, lower elevations weren't a problem at all... just the higher roads, and especially if there is ANY ice or highly compacted snow and it's <20° outside. Everyone up there has 4WD for a reason. ;)
Despite that, we still had a great time. We wouldn't hesitate returning (during better weather). We had really hoped to hike the property, but at least we were able to get some skiing in!!
Thanks again, Charlie and Joy! You really know how to do rental property right!
