Overview

Colchester Cottage Rental Photos and Description

4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 400' lakefront, sleeps 7-12

• Large, rustic, seasonal lake house (4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms) situated on 1.2 acres at the tip of Barney Point with 400(+/-) feet of cliff-top, Lake Champlain frontage and direct beach access! …15/20 minutes from Burlington, Vermont.

• Spectacular sunrises & sunsets with breathtaking views to the southeast, south and west encompassing the Lake Champlain valley and New York State's magnificent Adirondack Mountain Range.

• Interior stair and balcony railings, some furniture (tables, benches, chairs, swings, etc.) and great room ceiling truss crafted from cedar trees harvested on-site at time of construction in the 1920's!

• Modern kitchen, washer/dryer, wireless internet & cable TV, etc.

• Large screened-in porch for meals, games, cocktails and/or conversation.

• Great for family vacations/gatherings, romantic getaways, professional retreats, etc.

• Many recreational & dining options nearby: bike & running paths, boat launches, parks, restaurants (fine & fast), quick-stops, grocery stores, gas stations, even a drive-in movie theater!

• Family ownership: My parents purchased the cottage on Barney Point in 1948 and the land in 1984. Their children (I have 10 siblings!), grand children, great-grand children and great-great-grandchildren continue to enjoy the property every year as have countless friends, relatives and visitors over the years. It is the most special place in our lives. We are humbled to own it and thrilled to continue a tradition of sharing it with friends and visitors from around the world. It has been the scene of weddings, graduations and other festive celebrations ...as well as quiet getaways to refresh and recharge the energy in one's life. If you are planning a 'fair-weather' Vermont vacation, please consider staying at Barney Point. You won't be disappointed!

The Point did not disappoint!

  • 4 of 5

Rustic, enchanting and fun - those are the words to describe our vacay @ Barney Point. Like others noted, the house is a bit dated and lacks some modern amenities, but it's really nice otherwise and the owner Tim is easy to work with and permitted us to bring our dog. Best feature is the screened porch and the views. Worst feature is the house is loud (i.e. not many interior walls and no insulation).

Barney Point - Spectacular Location!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week at Barney Point! The cottage is just the amount of "rustic" but has all the modern amenities (washer/dryer, dishwasher, flat screen tv..etc). The screened porch was amazing for hosting great dinners (table was huge) and the view was spectacular. The beach was sandy and great for swimming. The owner (Tim) was great to work with and provided all important information to make our stay enjoyable. Close to the Causeway, great biking and only 15 minutes to Burlington. Hope to make Barney Point an annual tradition!

Pristine Rustic Excellence

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a true and traditional 'camp' experience on the lake with your family and friends, do not miss out on this rare experience at Barney Point. The location could not be better......it sits on a point with sweeping views of Lake Champlain. The house is large, cozy and just pretty amazing. You will find everything you need to prepare meals in the open kitchen and enjoy them out on an enormous dining table on the big screened porch overlooking the lake and property. Lazy cool mornings in the great room with a fire going....the best! This is a place that has been lovingly maintained with an effort to keep its original charm in tact. It feels like 'home' right away. My family was there for a week and did not want to leave. We will be back for sure!

Lovely open rustic lodge

  • 5 of 5

My mother and I concluded a "tour" of family visits with a 6 night stay at Barney Point. The setting is stunning with views across the lake and down the lake from this treed ledge above the lake. Every night we built an outdoor fire and watched the sun set. There great view to the lake from the front of the house and captivating partial views from most of the bedrooms.

The big open space is great for visiting, hanging out and entertaining. We had multiples dinner guests and visitors over the course of our time there and everyone loved it.

The owner Tim was very communicative in advance of the trip. We ended up arriving later than planned, and he brought in a lot of wood for the fireplace insert. What's more he turned on the lights and the space heaters and laid in a fire so that we felt immediately welcomed when we arrived. This particular night was chilly and he set out extra blankets and so on. We were very comfortable and did not get cold, and it was easy to learn to use the fireplace insert, which warms the main area of the house quickly. If you have a cold sensitive person in your group, the downstairs bedroom stays quite comfortable with the space heater and the fireplace.

There is a huge screened porch with another big table suitable for a big group, again with amazing views.

The kitchen is well equipped and we had everything we needed. I would suggest a few more non-glass plates and a salad spinner....but thats a suggestion not a complaint :-)

This is a setting best for people who appreciate simplicity, beauty, and a sense of history.

It is convenient to the causeway trail, which I feel is a must do for walkers or bikers. There are grocery stores a short drive away though I prefer to shop at City Market in Burlington which is an awesome market. The drive-in movie theater is also a must-do.

We definitely will look to return to Barney Point. We have stayed at many homes on the lake in Colchester, Shelbourne and Charlotte over the past three years when our daughter has been in school at UVM and this was certainly our favorite.

Owner's Response: Hi Dana, Thanks for your kind words. So glad you and your guests had such a wonderful time at Barney Point! It seems you took full advantage of everything our property has to offer ...and enjoyed your time there as much, if not more, than the other nearby places to go and things to do here in Vermont and the Lake Champlain valley. Perfect! All the best, Tim

Wonderful End to Our Summer at Barney Point

  • 5 of 5

Our large family just finished a week's stay at Barney Point, and is still talking about it. This rustic cottage is set on a cliff directly on Lake Champlain. With 14 of us, including 2 babies, there was ample room for eating, sleeping, and even getting away from each other if needed. We made use of the bunkie as well. This is like a cottage should be, simple yet well stocked. The magnificent wood stove heated up the cabin on those cooler mornings. Easy access to the beach, bicycle paths, Burlington, superb views of the mountains in NY, beautiful sunsets were all much enjoyed bonuses. We enjoyed all that Vermont has to offer.....scenery, swimming, fishing and kayaking in Lake Champlain, hiking up and down Mt. Mansfield, cliff jumping, biking, picking blueberries, Burlington Farmer's market (probably the best out there) and so much more.

Tim, thanks for all your help in planning our vacation. I knew, when I first spoke with you, that your cottage was meant for us....seeing you come from a family of 11, and we have 11 children. If we are ever back in Vermont, we will definitely stay at Barney Point.

Owner's Response: Dear Marcia and Gary, So glad to know you enjoyed your time at Barney Point. It does make a great home base from which to launch an exciting Vermont vacation. Thanks so much for coming! It was a real joy to see a big family like yours (just like ours!) take in so much of what Vermont has to offer ...not the least of which those amazing Lake Champlain sunsets from Barney Point! Seeing the smiles on the faces of all your kids (and their kids!) when you arrived and the enthusiasm with which everyone immediately began "setting up camp" (choosing rooms, exploring the grounds, etc.) brought me back 30 years!

Fabulous Vacation on Lake Champlain

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Barney Point was magical. Located close to Burlington and the Islands we had access to all the amenities of the area. The beach was a short walk down a path so we kayaked and swam every day. The bike path was minutes from the camp making biking into Burlington easy. Heading north on the bike path brought us to the Causeway that separates Mallette's Bay from the open lake.

The camp is very comfortable, clean and large enough for a crowd. The kitchen is fully equipped and the side eating porch has a 2 large tables to gather around for meals. When we needed a quiet place to read we only had to go to the front or back of the camp to find a quiet spot.

Tim was very helpful answering all our questions and giving us helpful tips. We plan to go back next year for another special vacation on the lake.
