Where time stands still, but passes too quickly

5 of 5
Submitted: November 27, 2012 Stayed: November 2012
This was our fifth trip to Ireland together but the first that we chose the Burren as our base camp. We normally stay near Lahinch, a once charming seaside town that, in recent years, has become overrun with soulless holiday homes (though the world class links course remains intact!). Heron Cottage is proof that the authentic Ireland experience can still be found. Secluded, scenic, well-equipped and -- most of all -- hosted by the charming and gracious Gerry and Helen (as well as their lovable Labradors). They greeted us with a pint at Linanne's (the local pub) followed by a roaring fire and a platter of smoked salmon at the cottage, setting the stage for a thoroughly relaxing and restorative week. We've only been home a few days, but can't wait to return. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Delightful Location, Wonderful Accommodations and Incredible Hosts!

5 of 5
Submitted: November 19, 2012 Stayed: October 2012
What a beautifully serene setting! My husband, two sisters, nephew and I stayed at Herron Cottage three nights the last week of October 2012 during our two-week UK adventure and we had an amazing experience! The owners, Gerry and his wife Helen are incredible hosts. The home is everything the website shows and much more…immaculately kept, warm and inviting, cozy and comfortable, and stocked with all the bits and pieces you need to feel at home!

Due to the daylight savings time change, we had less daylight than we planned for and arrived to the area after dark. Gerry had given us good landmarks to guide us along the way, but our sight navigation efforts were useless in the dark and my cell phone didn’t work so we couldn’t call for help. Fortunately we stopped at one of Gerry’s local landmarks, Linnanne’s Lobster bar, for directions. We were warmly welcomed and they even called Gerry who was anxiously waiting for us. He drove out to meet us and led us safely in. He had a roaring fire going in the huge stone fireplace and carried our bags up to the bedrooms so we could relax in comfort during the delightfully stormy night that followed.

The next morning Gerry came by to offer suggestions and directions for walking tours and day trips to see the beautiful surrounding country side. Because we were there for a quiet getaway we mainly did walking tours. One drive we did make was to the Burren Perfumery. Its location is the definition of “off the beaten path” and Gerry’s directions plus good signage got us there easily. And it turned out to be well worth the trip!

On our last night at the cottage, Gerry and Helen prepared a delicious dinner of smoked salmon and Irish stew for us. Everything was fresh and delicious and their warm hospitably made us feel like part of the family!

We appreciate Rick Steves’ Travel here in Washington State for their referral to Herron Cottage, and will highly recommend it to anyone we know headed to Ireland! Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer. We would love to go back and will plan to stay at least a week next time!

I left a bit of my heart at Heron Cottage

I had the vacation of my life due in great part to Heron Cottage and the lovely couple that own it. Not only was the cottage beautiful but the location was fantastic. I don't remember when I last felt so relaxed and generally at peace. Staying at Heron Cottage gives one a real taste of rural Ireland. My favorite part of the house is the rock wall with it's fireplace. It connects the cottage with the entire area which is full of rock walls and the famous landscape of the Burren. I'm dying to go back to stay and to visit the friends we made in Gerry and Helen.

We spent a wonderful quiet week in March 2012 at Heron cottage. The owners were wonderful, helpful and directed us to many beautiful walks. We loved the location of the cottage, a short walk away from the water, the hills, and stunning views. Cottage is perfect, luxuriously simple. Warm and welcoming, we loved the fireplace.Kitchen was very organised and there were many essentials when we arrived. -We will definitely return, I hope soon!
