About Dawn Harris

I am a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher who owns and operates a children's toy and book store next door.

Dawn Harris purchased this apartment in 1982

Why Dawn Harris chose Harlem

I was born and raised in Harlem. As a child I had always wanted to own a home here. When the opportunity arose I took advantage of it.

What makes this apartment unique

The high ceilings, the quiet backyard, the space, the friendly neighborhood, the park at the end of the street with a swimming pool, ten minute subway trip to Time Square or Yankee stadium, the outdoor cafés on the corners, the laundromat down the street, the quality supermarkets and wonderful shopping five blocks away.

We'll be back!

We'll be back!

Five star rating from all of us. We spent three weeks at Dawn's place over Christmas, and it became home from home for our family who live all round the globe - we probably stayed in and used the appartment more than most visitors/tourists would do. Dawn was really helpful and that made it all even better. Everything worked out well - spacious, warm, well fitted out, clean and comfortable. We liked the location - everything we needed close by and very good transport links to the major sights, lower Manhattan and beyond, or northwards out of the city. OK, its not brand new, but the old Brownstone has plenty of charm and really added to our NY experience. 125th St a short walk away for shops, banks; restaurants around if you need them. Central Park also a short walk away (the Skating Rink), and if you are feeling energetic you can walk across the park to the museums etc. Recommended - especially for a family. Thanks Dawn…..

Owner's Response: I loved hosting this family ! It was a home away from home coming for them. They came from around the world to be together for holidays. The proud parents of three handsome sons. I had many calls from the patriarch of the family coordinating arrival times and answering logistical questions, so I came to know them even before they arrived.
It was gratifying to know that within a few days they had settled in, enjoying each others company and their moms home cooking. They really relaxed in the apartment and took advantage of the convenient things right in the neighborhood. They also took public transportation all over the city to see the sites.
They became the family upstairs and I was sorry to see them leave. They said they will be back. I hope so.

Better than on the pictures

  • 5 of 5
Despite the passage of Sandy our stay was pleasant.
The owner greeted us warmly.
We were 2 adults and 3 teenagers and we do not miss place.
The apartment is better than on the pictures: It is nice, clean, bright.
The bedding is recent and the towels are of high quality.
The neighborhood is quiet, historic and well located:
small supermarket and restaurants nearby, 10 minutes by subway to Times Square and less than an hour from La Guardia with the M60 bus.
Thank you Madam Dawn

Owner's Response: This determined family spent two days in Montreal waiting for our airports to open after hurricane "Sandy" . They arrived two days late for their stay but they made up for it. Constantly on the go. They had a wonderful time and said they will return to see the things they were not able to because certain parts of the city was inaccessible. When ever they do come back I'm going to extend their stay by two days to make up the time they lost. I offered the additional time to them during their stay but they had to keep their reservation to get back to work on time. They were perfect guests, the young people were well mannered . I can't wait to see them again.

Apartment spacious and well located,in the beautiful area of Harlem, few steps from bus and subway.
Madam Dawn was very helpful, she called the car driver for us and gave us a lot of advices about places to visit and restaurant. Few meters from the apartment You find Lenox Lounge,a famous bar-restaurant with jam session as well the Apollo theater. Wireless, airconditioning and tv sat are in the flat, the bedrooms are silent, very strange for New Yourk!!

Owner's Response: The family from Italy are seasoned travelers with experience in renting apartments . We communicated many times before they arrived. I tried to make their stay as enjoyable as possible. I arranged their transportation, from and to the airport because I wanted them to have a positive experience coming and going. And they trully planned their trip to the city. They biked to the Cloisters, they visited little known museums. They took my suggestions on restaurants that had jazz as entertainment, and how to get the most from a metro card. When I asked them for feedback on their stay. They told me that the pictures I'd posted did not do justice to the spaciousness of the apartment and the wonderfully equipped beautiful kitchen. They took pictures themselves and sent them to me. I am putting them on my site. They also commented on how good it was to get a good nights sleep in "the silent bedrooms". I assured them that it happens to be a quiet neighborhood

Amazing place, even more amazing owner!

If you want to be close to Central Park, easy access to the subway or have an amazing experience with a VRBO owner - this is the place to stay. We felt like we were home before even walking into this renovated brownstone.

I'm not long winded... anything positive in previous reviews can be duplicated and expanded! Really the most accommodating owner I have ever met on VRBO. Do not hesitate to book this rental! You'll not be disappointed.

Owner's Response: I enjoy meeting people from across the country and around the world. Their energy and curiosity is contagious. I embrace every encounter with my guests as an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and strengthen my spirit.
This energetic team of creative cinematographers are making a documentary to share with the world. I wanted to help in some way. I was able to do this by doing small things to make them feel at home and comfortable.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5
I recently stayed here with a colleague. We were attending a conference at Columbia. It was a perfect location for us, just a few blocks and a short walk through Morningside Park to the University. It's a diverse neighborhood with tons of great markets and restaurants. The subway and buses are just a few blocks away making the rest of Manhattan easily accessible.
The apartment was great! It is a beautiful old brownstone with high ceilings and a new kitchen. It is furnished nicely and the beds were comfortable. Everything was super clean and there were brand new big, lush towels in the bathroom.
But it was our hostess that made the trip! Dawn was so easy to deal with. We made our plans rather last minute and she bent over backwards to make it happen. When we arrived, she made us feel welcome and gave us lots of suggestions for restaurants and places to go. She was friendly and welcoming and I feel like I've made a new friend!
I would stay here again in a heartbeat and hope to return again next year!
Thanks Dawn!

Owner's Response: I thoroughly enjoyed having the in service teachers at my home. As a retired NYC Bd of Ed teacher , graduate of Columbia University and early participant in the program they were attending, I was able to give them the background and genesis of many ideas being explored. And share with them all the new and yummy restaurants and markets in the neighborhood.Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious. I was so happy to see them experience the diversity and warmth of our community . I can't wait to see them again next year!

A gem in Harlem

  • 4 of 5
This apartment is ideally located if you are a family and need a bit more space, facilities and room to move at a reasonable price. The apartment itself is a bit rough in places but more than makes up for it by its location. Located just of Lenox Ave on west 120th it is amply serviced by public transport, Subway at 116th (7 minutes from times Square and other icons), buses on fifth Avenue and Central Park West and if you want to go to a baseball game less then 10 minutes from Yankee stadium. In addition a few blocks east up 120th is a very good laundry and at 116th on Lenox a very good mart.

If you want some down time in a leafy park the apartment is 6 blocks from Central Park on Lenox and a few blocks east on 120th Marcus Garvey park. In terms of eating places Italian just around the corner, local African American fare on Lenox and of course the famous Red Rooster and Silvia's north on Lenox. Ffinally if you need to shop you can find almost anything you need north west on 125th including clothes, shoes etc.

Finally there is Gandma (Dawn) herself if you can catch her she is so busy. Dawn was warm and accommodating and happy to talk about the area but most of all she is a pretty knowledgeable about the history of the area adding to the experience. Overall we had a great time and the location was quiet and secure and so after a long day of sight seeing it was great to come back and relax.

Owner's Response: We thoroughly enjoyed the three week visit with our Austrailian family. They gave new meaning to the term "walk -about" ! They used public transportation stratejectly but most times they WALKED. To Brooklyn via the Brooklyn Bridge, through Chinatown, the Cloisters. They walked from Greenwich Village through Central Park home. They were awesome! They found places we had forgotten about. They were curious and interested in everything New York. It made us appreciate the places and things we take for granted like the cosy park down our street with an ancient bell tower which marks the place where the Battle of Harlem Heights was fought with the British.
They shared their discoveries like the hot yoga salon they found while waiting for their laundry. It was a recent addition to our neighborhood that we had not heard about. They were also able to pursue individual interests; the men took in a Yankees game while Mom browsed through book stores and an African mart.
This family really gave our city a run for its money. They did the big things and the small, up close and personal, came home to an air conditioned comfortable clean apartment to rest.... And do it all over again the next day!
Even with all the experiences they enjoyed they say that there is still more they want to see and do next time. I can't wait....
