Jizo-An, Our Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5
We booked our reservation at Jizo-An with its previous owner, but the change of ownership was seamless for us. We were there for 3 weeks and loved every minute of it. The house is small, but well-equipped. and exactly as represented. The bed/pillows were very comfortable and I loved the way the morning light came into the bedroom. Plenty of closet space for a short stay for 2 people. Very quiet neighborhood, yet within easy walking distance to downtown and for those who don't mind walking, a little farther to the Gion district. The subway station, post office, a couple of grocery stores, a fabulous izakaya (Bamboo), several museums and temples are all located nearby. The WIFI connection was excellent. My husband and I are 67 and 61 respectively and had no trouble at all with the stairs to the bedroom (which are narrow and steep), but those who are less agile/fit might--just take it slowly and hold onto the railing. Loved the Japanese bath and had no trouble at all getting in or out of it. We look forward to staying at Jizo-An again!

Kyo-ryoori

  • 4 of 5
We enjoyed being in Niomondori area and loved the upstairs bedroom which has great relaxing charm and a little view. I am used to small spaces and have lived in Japan (often). For people who are not used to tight spaces (especially Americans) I would say the downstairs is a bit small but the efficiency of it is wonderful. A small sofa tucked under the stairs for viewing (quite a large screen) tv is cozy. We didn't do much but make coffee in the house, so lack of stove or electric cooking pan was fine. We ate "morningu setto" breakfasts at cafes which is my favorite thing anyway. Bath is nice but getting in and out may be hard for anyone with impaired agility. Showering is fine. I like living on a narrow roji. For an individual visitor it is absolutely ideal and for us it was just fine too. May I please come back?

Owner's Response: Hi Merry, we can and do, when asked supply electric frypan etc for cooking however "morningu setto" breakfast is far easier. There is coffee maker, kettle, microwave & toaster.
The house(it is a house)is tiny however far larger than hotel rooms and what many Kyoto couples and indeed some families live in uncomplainingly. The house originally had no bathroom, everyone used the 'Sento' so space has been lost to install a bathroom suitable for western guests. It has efficient aircon upstairs &down, unlimited hot water and all appliances are brand new.

Comfortable and Convenient

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent 4 nights here and it was very comfortable and in a nice neighborhood. Convenient to all the temples and sights on the east side of Kyoto, across the river from Pontocho-dori, and near a subway stop. 2 well-stocked grocery stores near-by. The owners provided useful maps and information about local highlights. Photos are true to the actual and we loved the traditional Japanese details.

Great Bachelorette Pad

  • 5 of 5
Jizo-an is in a great location to explore Kyoto on foot. The apartment has a very comfortable bed, english TV, plenty of hot water, and a wonderful cast iron bathtub. My mother and I enjoyed staying there and recovering from some serious sight-seeing. It is a fusion of old machiya and modern convenience, with many unique touches. The only thing to keep in mind before booking is that the stairs to the bedroom are steep.

Owner's Response: Thankyou- yes Jizo-an is in a great location and guests have said they fall asleep in the bath after walking all day. The stairs had been replaced and are closer to the modern width/height ratio than the very steep tradition machiya steps, not an issue i would think for anyone fit enough to walk around Kyoto and do 'serious sight seeing'- but yes keep in mind it is a two story cottage

Thank you and greetings from Berlin,
Rita

Knus en gezellig

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: GOOGLE TRANSLATION- Nice and cozy apartment in an alley in a quiet location just outside the bustle of the city. 5 minutes from the Metro and 10 minutes from great shopping and a food market. A perfect base for exploring Kyoto on foot or by bike. The apartment is complete with a bath and shower, toilet with toilet seat heating, air conditioning, heating, toaster, microwave, etc. Even the soap and shampoo is not lacking. The owners are very friendly and are always there for you and immediately. Only downside is that a hot plate is missing, so an egg bake is difficult.
Owner- responce. Thankyou Kees im glad you enjoyed your stay. We can supply an electic frypan to cook with.
