JIZO-AN's Great location: Jizo-an has lots of maps and information on Kyoto's famous gardens, temples, antique shops& restaurants, many within an easy walk.
Jizo-An is located in the temple district of Kyoto adjacent to Kyoto’s Higashiyama tourist area. The area around the house has many interesting shops and is steeped in Kyoto history. The highlights of Kyoto; Heian Jinju, Kyoto Museum, Nanzenji, Kodaiji and Chion-in Temples, Maruyama Park, Philosophers Path and many more are an easy stroll from Jizo-An. There are many interesting cafes, antique shops and specialty shops that make sweets, incense and bags from old kimonos. Fifteen minutes away to the East are the Higashiyama mountains that have superb hiking. Also the upmarket restaurant area of Pontocho along the banks of the Kamagawa River is an easy stroll. Gion the Geisha /nightlife district is 15 mins walk south. This whole area is flat and an easy walk and as with all Kyoto is quiet and perfectly safe.
As guests at Jizo-An, you can benefit not only from the great setting of the house, but also from your hosts’ extensive knowledge and experience of tourism and travel in Japan – Avi and Wendy also own and run “Windows to Japan”, a specialist tour agency which opens authentic, soul stirring windows to Japan for independent travelers. From planning to operating and guiding tours in Japan to hosting guests at Jzo-An, Avi and Wendy take great pleasure in introducing visitors to the real Japan and focusing on the individual requirements and wishes of all their guests.
We booked our reservation at Jizo-An with its previous owner, but the change of ownership was seamless for us. We were there for 3 weeks and loved every minute of it. The house is small, but well-equipped. and exactly as represented. The bed/pillows were very comfortable and I loved the way the morning light came into the bedroom. Plenty of closet space for a short stay for 2 people. Very quiet neighborhood, yet within easy walking distance to downtown and for those who don't mind walking, a little farther to the Gion district. The subway station, post office, a couple of grocery stores, a fabulous izakaya (Bamboo), several museums and temples are all located nearby. The WIFI connection was excellent. My husband and I are 67 and 61 respectively and had no trouble at all with the stairs to the bedroom (which are narrow and steep), but those who are less agile/fit might--just take it slowly and hold onto the railing. Loved the Japanese bath and had no trouble at all getting in or out of it. We look forward to staying at Jizo-An again!
We enjoyed being in Niomondori area and loved the upstairs bedroom which has great relaxing charm and a little view. I am used to small spaces and have lived in Japan (often). For people who are not used to tight spaces (especially Americans) I would say the downstairs is a bit small but the efficiency of it is wonderful. A small sofa tucked under the stairs for viewing (quite a large screen) tv is cozy. We didn't do much but make coffee in the house, so lack of stove or electric cooking pan was fine. We ate "morningu setto" breakfasts at cafes which is my favorite thing anyway. Bath is nice but getting in and out may be hard for anyone with impaired agility. Showering is fine. I like living on a narrow roji. For an individual visitor it is absolutely ideal and for us it was just fine too. May I please come back?
My husband and I spent 4 nights here and it was very comfortable and in a nice neighborhood. Convenient to all the temples and sights on the east side of Kyoto, across the river from Pontocho-dori, and near a subway stop. 2 well-stocked grocery stores near-by. The owners provided useful maps and information about local highlights. Photos are true to the actual and we loved the traditional Japanese details.
Jizo-an is in a great location to explore Kyoto on foot. The apartment has a very comfortable bed, english TV, plenty of hot water, and a wonderful cast iron bathtub. My mother and I enjoyed staying there and recovering from some serious sight-seeing. It is a fusion of old machiya and modern convenience, with many unique touches. The only thing to keep in mind before booking is that the stairs to the bedroom are steep.

Thank you and greetings from Berlin,
