About David Colin

I was born and raised here in Rome. In the late 1960's, my father was one of the founders of the American University of Rome (AUR), and, indeed, the apartment was the administrative office and classroom (and impromptu party space) for AUR over a number of years. So, the apartment has been in my family for over 40 years.

Although I now live near Washington, DC, where I am an economist, I come back to Rome as often as possible. Despite all my time here, Rome continues to be a fascinating city that always has more to offer. I hope you find the Eternal City as welcoming and wonderful as I do.

David Colin purchased this apartment in 1992

Why David Colin chose Piazza di Spagna

This apartment has been in my family for more than 40 years, was completely remodeled and furnished in late 2010, and is now available for rental as a self-catering apartment. Upon booking, I will send you a detailed information package on the apartment, the neighborhood, restaurants, and sights. We offer complimentary airport arrival pick-up for our guests, and an English-speaking guest services manager will meet you at your arrival. Linens, welcome snacks and beverages, utilities, wifi, taxes, check-in/check-out, and end of stay cleaning are all included in the price. Additional car service or cleaning/linens can be arranged.

What makes this apartment unique

In the heart of Rome's Historic Center, just around the corner from the famous Spanish Steps, this spacious two bedroom, two bathroom apartment is surrounded by fine dining and fabulous shopping. It is within walking distance of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and many other historic sites and museums, and near the subway, taxi stands, bus stops, and bike rental. Located in a traditional Roman palazzo, the apartment was fully renovated in 2010 and is now available for rental (5 night minimum).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Long before our trip, the owner sent us a hugely helpful list of resources and ideas of things to do in Rome; the apartment itself has every guidebook imaginable as well as maps, plus a binder full of tips on places to eat, places to avoid, how to navigate the subway (simple, as it turns out, and just steps away). Al that, combined with the unbeatable location, made us feel we had the inside track on the city. The apartment is very tastefully decorated, both modern and comfortable, as well as being quite large. At the end of a day of walking, it was great to sprawl out in the living room and watch a DVD or listen to music -- there are books to read, movies to watch, an iPod with a good selection of songs. The beds are comfortable and even on New Year's Eve, with fireworks going off all around us, we had no trouble at all sleeping thanks to the white noise machine in the bedroom. There's a lot of storage space and many thoughtful touches (umbrellas; bandaids; lots of soap; laundry detergent). It was like borrowing the home of a thoughtful friend who has great taste and a genuine desire to insure you have a good time. The apartment was the number one reason we had a wonderful time in Rome, and we will be back, Asap. [Posted on flipkey.com January 11, 2014]

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

After many searches on VRBO I came across this little gem. After reading all the reviews I decided to go with The Spanish Steps Apartment. Boy am I glad I did. Right from the first contact with the owner, David, I felt as if I knew him. His response to all my queries was fast and nothing seemed to be a problem for him. He sent out an information packet which was full of things to do, see, eat etc. On arrival at our 'home' we were completely in love. The apartment has everything a family could need (we are mum, dad 19yr old boy and 15 yr old girl from Australia) All the appliances you need, comfortable beds, good heating (winter for us) wifi that worked. We could basically walk everywhere from here and once we got our bearings we realised how close the Spanish Steps really were!! We enjoyed our family time in Rome and staying in this wonderful, comfortable apartment made all the difference to us. Definitely recommend this apartment for people who want a home away from home.

Perfect in all aspects

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from spending Christmas in Rome at the Spanish Steps Apartment. Our family of 4 had a great vacation and the apartment could not have been more perfect. From the start, everything was efficient and informative. The information packet was extremely helpful in planning our trip. We also received help in making a couple of dinner reservations and the pick-up at the airport was perfect after a long and delayed flight. Tour books in the apartment were helpful and having a washer/dryer and ironing board was great! The apartment had everything needed.....including blister band aids after a day of walking miles! The owner was so helpful in our planning, even had a cake for our son's birthday. Location was central and close to all the sites. Restaurant recommendations provided one of our best meals in Rome. We hope to return to this awesome apartment!

Lucky me--one month at the Spanish Steps Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Every year I rent an apartment for a month in a city somewhere in the world and this year I picked Roma. Choosing the right apartment for such a long stay is a very important part of the process. I am picky and a very knowledgeable traveler. I chose extremely well this year. The Spanish Steps apartment was everything I hoped for and more. Starting with the basics--spotless, well appointed and decorated, fantastic location, great weekly housekeeping, washer/dryer, dishwasher and comfortable bed. I would have been happy with all of that, but this apartment provided so much more. The owners provided detailed information on restaurants and sights and the neighborhood--not just info left in the apartment, but in phone calls and emails prior to the trip. The contracting process was imminently fair and reasonable. The extras in the apartment were so thoughtful--a sound machine (the place isn't noisy at all, but Roma anywhere on a Friday or Saturday night can have the occasional late night party goers (me among them), but with the sound machine I heard no extraneous noise. A mini iPad loaded with food apps and other helpful apps--not just random choices either--I mean Katie Parla! That is a foodie choice. A computer and most importantly a printer so that when you book a ticket you can print it out with no worries. A loaded iPod and sound system. Brochures and cards for well chosen restaurants and sight seeing opportunities. I would keep going, but people sometimes can't believe a 100% happy review. Believe it. I have no affiliation with the owner other than a well satisfied customer. This place is for the discriminating traveler who has a beautiful home they are leaving behind and wants to have a similarly beautiful, well-appointed home away from home. Lucky me, but lucky you if you chose this lovely apartment.

Perfect location to explore and experience the eternal city

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful elegant and ample apartment. Location in the mid of old Rome - very near to all major sights. Owner is very supportive and forthcoming. I never will take a hotel room in Rome again, as no hotel can be compared to living in this flat. My wife, our (already grown-up) sons and me really enjoyed the stay. I hope to be able to return soon !

A wonderful stay at Spanish Steps Apartment!

  • 5 of 5

We - 3 adults - my parents and me - stayed at the Spanish Apartment for 4 nights at the beginning of July and we loved the place - it is nicely furnished and very clean, extremely comfortable since every little thing was taken care of - there was a computer with Internet, a telephone, even an I pnone, TV, completely equipped kitchen, a lot of information for the stay in Rome. The apartment manager, Rosy, was really nice and helpful. And the location was perfect - it is just in the centre of the Old Town and since there is no metro in this part it was very good to be able to reach the place in less than 20 min walking from every point in town. It was definitely better than a hotel!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review and so glad you enjoyed your stay at the Spanish Steps Apartment on Via della Mercede! The apartment's resident iPod Touch (alas, not an iPhpne) is loaded with music, but next week we are adding an iPad Mini packed with tons of terrific apps on Rome. And, next time make sure to try the Metro -- it's only a few minutes' walk away, is easy to use, and makes getting around Rome even easier.

Fantastic location, and very nice apartment!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I took our first trip to Italy with our 14 year old daughter and 11 year old son. The apartment was in a fantastic location, and within walking distance to all of the important historical sites of Rome. Our stay in Rome was the first destination of four in Italy and we were thrilled with the choice we made to stay in this apartment. It was spacious, very clean and well air conditioned...it was very hot in Rome during our stay. We were met at the airport by a driver waiting with our name on a sign and promptly taken away to our apartment where we were met by Rosie and her husband, Rosie was to be our contact during our stay. She told us not to hesitate to call her if we needed anything, but honestly there was really no need as the apartment had everything required.

If / when we return to Rome we will definitely be booking this property again.
