This is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful locations on Mount Desert Island. Located in the town of Bar Harbor, on protected Western Bay, our cottage sits so close to the ocean that water laps against the deck at high tide. The property is immediately adjacent to the Blagden Indian Point Preserve. Many visitors come to the Preserve to see the harbor seals basking in the sun at low tide. The best view of the seals is from our deck. With over a thousand feet of shoreline, we have a beach for convenient kayak access as well as picturesque rocky ledges. Private tennis court is located on the property. Located minutes away from Acadia National Park.
Please do not bring jet-skis or other motorized water-craft. The low-tide resting area for the protected harbor seals is VERY close, and these types of vehicles will disturb them.
The Blagden Preserve: The Cottage at Indian Point has over a thousand feet of shoreline, including two beaches as well as traditional Maine shoreline ledges. But if that's not enough, the Cottage is also immediately adjacent to the Blagden Preserve, which is part of the Nature Conservancy. This means that visitors to the Cottage have access to more than 1000 additional feet of shoreline, plus the miles of maintained walking/running trails on the Blagden Preserve. The forests of the Preserve include red spruce, northern white cedar, balsam fir, red oak, red maple and tamarak. Wildlife at the Cottage and on the Preserve include harbor seals, white-tailed deer, porcupines, ruby-crowned kinglets, osprey, loons, 6 woodpecker species, and as many as 12 species of warblers.
Sports at the Cottage at Indian Point: Guests at the Cottage enjoy many athletic opportunities, such as kayaking, swimming (the bay becomes warm enough for swimming on particulary hot days of July and August). For tennis enthusiasts, there is a private tennis court (asphalt surface) on the property. A basketball standard is also available on the tennis court. Runners will enjoy the trails of the Blagden Preserve, as well as the low-traffic country roads on the western side of Mount Desert Island. Biking is also a popular activity (Bicycles not provided).
Acadia National Park: Everett Cottage at Indian Point is only a few miles away from the Pretty Marsh picnic area, which is in the western portion of Acadia National Park. The more well-known parts of Acadia, like Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain, and Thunder Hole, are approximately 12 miles away in the eastern part of the park.
The property was so fantastic, that we only explored the other part of the island only 1 day.
This home has the perfect New England nautical charm. The amenities are 2nd to none. Every detail is taken care of to make this the most memorable of vacations. From board games to play at night, to kid size water shoes and every thing in between.
Our most favorite part, was sitting on the beautiful deck in the morning with a cup of hot coffee and watching the smooth glass water or at night with a glass of wine and watching the sun go down.
We enjoyed seeing the seals in the water and paddling the kayak out to get a better look to see them play. My personal favorite was watching a bald eagle swoop down low and grab a small fish out of the water and keep flying to a distant tree to have breakfast.
We enjoyed the immense hiking opportunities in the area. From exploring the beautiful Nature Preserve next door and finding 2 red chairs overlooking a secluded cove to the discovery of a small family cemetery that is located in the woods near the main road.
The house is completely stocked with EVERYTHING that you will need to have a most enjoyable stay. The only thing that you need to bring for supplies are the beverages and the food that you wish to consume. Everything else is provided. EVERYTHING. You can seriously spend the whole time at this home and never leave and you will never suffer from boredom.
Our teenagers enjoyed the outdoor basketball/tennis court. The younger kids enjoyed the numerous opportunities for rock and seashell hunting. And for the teenagers, that "must" stay in contact with their friends, via social media, the WIFI system works great. We all enjoyed watching the immense change to the scenery when the tide was *in* versus when it was *out*.
Our family has vacationed on Mt Desert Island many times, and we all agree that this is THE BEST place to stay. It has a better view/more amenities and expansive room than those fancy resorts in town.
It such a neat place, that other members of our family are already planning to hold a family reunion there. Our oldest teenage son, had such a good time, that he has declared this home as *our* vacation home and that he is okay if we go back their every summer. We will be back.
We also enjoyed the quiet solitude at night that was interrupted by the seals that were calling out to each other. Kinda of spooky at first, but then it became pretty neat to hear.
We agree with all the previous reviews. The location of the property is spectacular and the kitchen was a pleasure to work and socialize in. All mattresses were extremely comfortable. The only thing the family was disappointed in was that the TV in the game/family was not large enough. We were there in the late Fall and are anxious to return but we will try to come in early September next year.
"This is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful locations on Mount Desert Island"..... We feel very strongly that it is!!
If you are searching for a remote retreat where the only sounds you will hear are from mother nature herself, this is where you want to be. Our four days on this property provided a retreat like no other. We experienced beautiful sunsets, stunning night skies (complete with meteor!), eagles, deer, porcupine, loon, comerants and kingfishers. However, the most delightful of all was watching (and listening to) the harbor seals sunbathe on the rocks and then kyaking this picturesque bay while dozens of them popped up all around us to check us out...truly a wonderul and awe inspiring experience. We grinned from ear to ear and barley contained our silence.
This home is a treasure, steeped in family tradition and clearly well cared for. While there were only two of us for our stay, we envisioned family with children completely enjoying all it has to offer. The owner was responsive and helpful and all the information provided was accurate.
We would highly recommend this property for those looking to really escape. It is a good 10-15 minute drive to get in an out of the property which should be considered. We found this as a plus, but others may not be so enthused. We would love to go back to this property again.
Close your eyes and imagine every wonderful thing you've ever heard about the Maine coast...now open them and experience it in person at this out in the wilderness get away. We watched in awe as the tide rose and fell at our doorstep - bringing to life the tide pools that we explored and giving rise to "islands" filled with seals. What a wonderful way to experience the ocean and its bounty!
Surrounded by a nature preserve, you can hike the trails or just sit back and enjoy the sunsets. This cottage is perfectly placed for those who want to explore Acadia or Bar Harbor. We did a little of both, but my favorite time was spent on the deck.
The cottage is outfitted with everything you need to enjoy what Maine has to offer - kayaks, a paddle boat, life preservers, rubber boots (for tidal pool trips!), slickers & light weight jackets, backpacks, flashlights, binoculars, games, tennis equipment, basketballs, and a fully equiped kitchen.
We had dinner at the "ocean front" dinning table most nights because we couldn't bear to miss a sunset! There was plenty of space for the 6 of us to spread out and my granddaughters loved the game room.
The place is a bit of a throwback to the 70's (carpeting and decor), but all the appliances have been updated and it is well maintained.
We all agreed that we could easily have spent another week if work and school were not nipping at our heels!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property. It is a beautiful setting and gave us loads of privacy. We loved viewing and listening to the seals as they sunned themselves on the rocks. The deck and sun porch made great spots to enjoy our morning coffee and the surrounding beauty.
The house is nice but not fancy. The owner is easy to work with and we did not have any problems. The house met our expectations and the setting exceeded them. We would rent this property again.
The cottage is located within the town limits of Bar Harbor, but is NOT located inside the village itself. It is located at Indian Point on Western Bay, adjacent to the Blagden Preserve, which is about a ten minute drive from either downtown Bar Harbor or Northeast Harbor.
