UNIQUE, CHARMING LAKESIDE COTTAGE WITH BREATHTAKING SUNSET VIEWS

Niles Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. sleeps 5

'Listen to the quiet. It's the world humming.' Nestled down a semi-private lane in the woods where deer and wild turkey roam, this charming French country cottage decorated in shabby chic style offers a large deck, a beautiful gazebo, stunning views of the lake and 75 feet of private lakefront with Adirondack chairs, dock, three kayaks, a canoe and flotation devices. Faux painted stucco walls, MacKenzie-Child fish plates and mosaics, cathedral ceilings and one of a kind coziness make this the perfect location for a family of four or two couples looking for serenity and the quiet contemplation of beauty. Two fire pits, one by deck and one on beach, and a wood-stove, make for cozy bonfires. The cottage is also heated with electric heat, and offers the modern amenities of Direct TV top movie package with 700 channels and DVD player, Wifi satellite computer access, Gameboy, and a gas grill. Washer and dryer, pet and kid friendly; lawn and thirty-two steps to beach.

Beautiful, semi-private location: Although there are other privately owned camps nearby, the quiet is pervasive: awake to the sounds of birds and the lovely lapping of the lake. Located about half-way down Owasco lake on the east side, it is the perfect place for whiling away a summer's day. Hike the wood-lined half-mile road to the lane which offers a four-mile circle with beautiful views of the green fields and blue waters of Owasco lake. You are out in the country, and yet only fifteen minutes from the quaint village of Skaneateles and twelve minutes from Wegman's in Auburn and its other convenience stores. A perfect paradise for family and friends. Pets and children welcome- perfect for two vacationing couples or a family of four or five.

I am an English teacher at a local university. I live in the house closer to the fire lane so I am available for any questions and help you may need. I have owned the cottage for 13 years and have enjoyed meeting my renters and enjoying the peace and beauty of the beautiful setting.

Mary Ellen Yates purchased this cottage in 2001

It is unique in its decoration- very arty and shabby chic- and in its few, which is truly magnificent. It is perfect for a small family, a honeymoon couple, or two couples enjoying the beauty of the area near the Finger Lakes wineries and charming Skaneateles and Ithaca.

It is beautiful, and private- very few neighboring camps on this lane- yet not far from shores and civilization. Yet I feel whenever I am here that I am truly at peace with the world and at one with nature, because the view is so magnificent, especially at sunset. Yet it also has the modern conveniences: direct TV movie and sportspackage, Wi-fi, and all music stations for all tastes.

COZY COTTAGE

  • 4 of 5
My family enjoyed staying at the cottage for the fishing derby. I was disappointed that I needed to clean the cottage myself prior to starting our weekend away. The grill also needed to be scrubbed down prior to using. Make sure you bring jugs of water for drinking, brushing teeth etc. The deck offered plenty of seating and we enjoyed the outdoor firepit. The dock location is shallow but we were able to dock our fishing boat successfully. The owner seems very nice and was non-intrusive.

Owner's Response: I am very glad you enjoyed your stay. I did clean myself for four hours before your arrival. I do know the carpet is indoor outdoor and I have to pick up tiny carpet pills by.hand which I did. If you could let me know the areas you felt still needed cleaning, I would very much appreciate it.(I just replaced the grill frame as their shelf life is small). I also state in contract that the house is on well water, which I also have in my house which is fine for bathing, cooking, and drinking, although many bring bottled water, which I leave in the rrefrigerator. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Mary Ellen

GOOD VALUE

  • 4 of 5
There were five adults staying here for two nights. two in a queen bed, one in a sort of full bed, one in a twin and one on the full size pullout couch. There was enough room only because we were on the nice desk and by the firepit the whole time. We didn't spend much time inside. The place definitely needed to be cleaned before we arrived and considering the owner lives right behind the cottage this shouldn't have been difficult. The linens were clean but the place needed to be dusted and vacuumed and the lawn needed to be cut. The parking situation is very awkward. Their driveway has huge holes in it so you have to use the neighbors driveway and drive through a narrow fence to park. We tried parking next to the neighbor and she asked us to move our car. She doesn't make an effort to put her car out of the way so I wouldn't be surprised if it's gotten hit before. the price was reasonable and the sunset view is gorgeous. We went in September but I can definitely see enjoying swimming in the lake in the summer.

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed your stay. The house is best suited for four, as there is a queen, an antique double, a twin, and a queen pull-out, so a family for four or overnight guests make the best fit. I did vacuum, dust, wash floors, bathroom, etc. the morning of your stay (which is my day off from teaching,so it is my Friday morning job from 9-1 during fall weekend rentals). As far as parking, the contract specifically states that guests use the legal right of way that goes through the neighbors yard as that is the better, less steep driveway and is closer to the cottage. There is also a spot closer to the road for renters who prefer to walk a little, as the other driveway you mentioned in your review has indeed been made bumpy by this year's rains and is not intended for renter's use. The neighbor has never been hit but does not allow parking on her property. I can park two below and two above if necessary, which fits my rental limit of five. The sunset is indeed gorgeous and I hope you were able to use the kayaks and the dock to enjoy the water, as it has remained warm enough for boating until last week. I hope you will return to Owasco Lake at a later date to enjoy the season. Mary Ellen Yates

CHARMING LITTLE COTTAGE ON A SERENE LAKE

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was just as it was described. Clean, charming, and suitable for everyone in the family including our 2 beagles. One would certainly rent to enjoy the outdoors. As stated in the description the kitchen is small, though adequate. A perk to have a washer and dryer in the ample sized bathroom. The stairs to the water were steep though manageable, even when walking with 2 dogs on a leash. Kayaks at the ready for the boys as well as a serene lake to enjoy our boat, fish, and swim. All this followed by a fire by the water and s'mores at dusk. On a rainy day we took the short drive to the town of Skaneateles for shopping, dining, and strolling around. The owner, Mary Ellen, was great and provided information in regards to docking our boat etc. We will certainly be visiting this property again.

LOVELY GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
This charming, rustic property provided us with a beautiful view of Owasco Lake at the start of our summer. We enjoyed kayaking, lounging by the lake, and reading on the perfectly situated deck. The nearby town of Skaneateles provided great shopping opportunities, and we also got the chance to try out some of the awesome local wineries. Please note that there is a short flight of stairs down to the cottage, and an additional steeper staircase down to the lovely lakefront, so the property is not handicap accessible. We had a peaceful, enjoyably getaway, however, and I would definitely recommend this place to a couple or a small family.

COZY, QUIRKY COTTAGE

  • 3 of 5
Tiny but cozy, this cottage was big enough for the two of us. I could see having two small children, but any more and it would be really crowded. The gravel driveway is quite steep downhill to the cottage and walking it with luggage is a bit challenging. The view from the large deck is lovely. Kayaks are available, but the water is several steep steps down from the cottage. The appliances are functional but old. The washing machine is stuck on one setting, the stove requires a match to start. The kitchen area is quite cramped and not suited for cooking big meals. The utensils are there, but there is not much room. However you can cook on the grill on the deck. Young families or fit adventurous couples looking for privacy and water activities will love it here.

GREAT FINGER LAKE CABIN

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful cabin right on the lake with great sunsets as advertised. The cabin was charming with all of the necessities. Our host lives just above the cabin and was very helpful and friendly. We used the cabin for a fall get-away weekend and enjoyed the colorful leaves as well as the other nearby lakes and wineries. We also enjoyed several of the nearby restaurants especially in Skaneateles. Always a great time to visit the Finger Lake region just before the onset of winter.
