**Where we're located**
Our house is in the progressive eco-friendly community of Balcones de Majagual. The community is located just 30 miles from the Costa Rican border and about 20 minutes north of San Juan Del Sur where you can find plenty of nightlife, restaurants and shopping.
Balcones de Majagual was built within a protected forest reserve and is a sister development from the creators of Morgan's Rock. We are just steps from the best beaches of Playa Maderas, Playones, and Majagual. We have monkeys, exotic birds, fascinating jungle creatures, sea turtles, great surf breaks, fishing, hiking, kayaking, and the best sunsets.
**San Juan Del Sur**
Our Casa is about a 20 minute drive to the lively beach town of San Juan del Sur where you can find markets, restaurants and bars. The town is also a launch off spot for many adventures such as turtle viewing at La Flor, Volcano expeditions, Zip-line excursions, ATV rentals, Sport fishing and much more. Of course, a good meal or sampling the local Rum with family and friends while overlooking the bay is another good reason to visit San Juan Del Sur.
Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts will love the wide variety of beautiful birds and fascinating jungle creatures. One of our favorite things to do is to take the short trip to La Flor to see the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles laying eggs and their hatchlings emerging from their nests and heading out to sea. Please go with a guide and don’t step on them! There are plenty of monkeys in the trees and exotic birds that you’ll see regularly. Other wildlife in the area include Sloths, Ocelots, Marguays, Coatimundi and more… these may be more difficult to spot.
We’re located on some of the best beaches in Nicaragua. Playa Maderas is one of Nicaragua’s best, consistent surf breaks. Majagual is a calm beach that is great for swimming. You can even rent surfboards or boogie boards at the beach and can buy a snack or a cold beer. Playa Marsella is a nice beach that is a short 10 minute drive south. Surf by day or check out the restaurants. It’s a nice alternative to driving to San Juan Del Sur.

Casa De Mono is owned by a Dave, Carol and Ed. All 3 of us live in Southern California. We work quite a bit and enjoy traveling when we're able to get away. Our style is somewhat adventurous, we like to go to exotic places and try different things. We hope to spend more time in Nicaragua as we get older and work less.
Carol purchased this house in 2008
When we arrived in Nicaragua, we stayed in San Juan Del Sur and loved it. The Nicaraguan people were wonderful and the expats were cool and very interesting - I can see why they never leave. After looking at land in various places, we picked our area 'Balcones de Majagual' because the beaches were so beautiful and secluded. In addition, the developers believed in preserving nature and building in a way that uses local, sustainable woods and building materials. We were sold on it, bought a lot and decided to build a custom home. Our home, Casa De Mono, was finished at the end of 2008. At Casa De Mono, you get lots of nature, the best beaches in Nicaragua, yet are still close enough to the nightlife of San Juan Del Sur - about a 20 minute drive.
Our house is one of the most private in our community and positioned so you won't see or hear the neighbors. We have a very nice private infinity pool and GREAT outdoor space. We're one of the closest to the beach as well. An easy 15 minute walk down the private nature path. The drive is just a few minutes.
I stayed at Casa Mono for Christmas 2014 and it was everything that all of the reviews say -- beautiful, peaceful, and wonderful (honestly, I'm not sure that the pictures even do it justice!). The house is really a series of structures "connected" by one continuous "roof"/covering. One of the things that is so wonderful about this layout is that it centers around the outdoor space. Additionally, it allows for people to be in the bedrooms and/or the kitchen area and/or the living room area while still feeling like you have your own space. The complex is very well run -- very present 24 hour security and very helpful maintenance crew who were attentive -- and the owners made the booking easy. The office manager at ReMax, Gabby, was really above and beyond, including helping us coordinate our lost luggage on Christmas Eve! Overall it was a wonderful vacation and I hope to be back soon!
The house is beautiful but it is the view that puts it over the top. There were 4 of us that stayed there (2 couples) in Nov. 2014. We enjoyed our stay so much. Gabby was very helpful and quick to reply to emails during the booking process and preparation for the trip. Shayla gave us the tour of the town and house. She was very helpful and informative. We took surfing lessons from her husband Scott one of the days we were there. It was a ton of fun.
The best fish tacos you will ever eat are located on the beach by the house. When you drive down to the beach and are facing the water turn to the left and keep walking till you reach the restaurant (about 15 min). We ate here twice during the week. Get there early because they do sell out of food.
This place is incredible! The pictures are nice but don't fully do it justice. It was just my boyfriend and I and we felt like it was such a waste to not be sharing the beauty and space with another couple. The layout is perfect and open with lots of room for cooking meals, playing cards or relaxing by the pool. If you want privacy the bedrooms are very spacious and each with your own private bathroom and "balcony" type sitting area.
The Re-max ladies that coordinated our arrival were fantastic. Nicole gave us an amazing little tour around town to familiarize ourselves and patiently answered our zillion questions! Carol as well helped us tremendously with recommendations for things like shuttles and other queries before arriving.
Now we're not sure if the time of year makes a difference in the roads or not, but it is correct that you need a 4x4. In fact if we were to come back we'd get a truck opposed to SUV just to make the ride even easier. Perhaps we were cautious with our rental, but it took us close to 30 minutes to get to town.
Again, apparently because of the time of year (end of the rainy season) we did have quite a few scorpion and spider friends visit our room. Once we discovered Raid and spraying down the doorway thresholds though we didn't have any issues. Just be prepared to have a little routine for ensuring there's no creepy crawlies in your shoes or bed!
If we had any complaints it would probably be that the property isn't as close to the beach as what we expected. We weren't able to find the "nature path" but even if we had, apart from the insects we'd probably want to avoid, it seemed like much longer of a walk than 10-15 minutes (especially on the way back walking up hill) to want to do in the heat. I think it took us 6-7minutes to drive down which isn't bad, just beware, that beach road is the most treacherous where you will be thankful for having the 4x4 truck!
Even still, with the incredible views and private pool we didn't have much ambition to venture because it was so relaxing just hanging out there. The family room has movies, games and books for those rainy nights. The kitchen is fully equipped including blender to make some icy cold drinks by the pool.
The 24 hour guards made it feel especially safe. As well, all the staff who came to clean every 3 days or so (and the pool guy daily) did a wonderful job and were very friendly.
All in all, we had a wonderful time and would definitely return!
We totally agree with all reviewers. Beforehand we were a little worried if staying in the middle of nowhere as two women would be the smartest thing, but no worries here. Just go, get a 4WD and enjoy! The house and the community is stunning and felt safe. Tons of birds, great rough roads and very private.
We checked out some of the other homes in the community and found Casa Mono to be the most appealing due to the large open air set-up and great view from the infinity pool.
Gabby at Re:Max is the best and emailing with Carol to set up a stay in short notice was a breeze. We wholeheartedly recommend this home and Nicaragua to all our friends. It's a wonderful and beautiful country with super friendly people and adventures.
Gabby connected us with Scott, our patient surf instructor/photographer, great guy! Playa Remanso is perfect and super quiet for beginners. When you like horse riding go on a ride through beautiful with Rancho Chilamante: http://ranchochilamate.com.
We'll be back!
Where to begin on such an amzing expereince? Lets start with our introduction to San Juan Del Sur. This town is super laid back, easy to drive around, impossible to get lost! We were introduced to the fish market which is at the end of the beach where the shipping and fishing boats are. WOW, anything you want for next to nothing. Then we loaded up at one of the MANY bakeries in and around town. Produce can be purchased at a little market in town or off one of the many trucks driving around with a loud speaker.
We then proceeded to the grocery store " Pali" which is basically at the dirt road that leads you to Casa De Mono. Finally, all loaded up with food, fish, and all the supplies to enjoy some great meals while relaxing. From the grocery store, it is about a 15min 4x4 ride to the house. You will pass a zip line adventure on the right within the first few hundred yards. 16 zip lines through the tress with the howler monkeys.
Alas, we have arrived! We enter the door to the property.......speechless. This house is perfectly situated on the hills, with the most amazing view of the ocean! The focal point is the outdoor living space with the infiniti pool. I now realized that I am going to be spending the next 5 days in the most practical outdoor living space designed. There is a sheltered area to dine, sit and read. Then you have the pool to enjoy the sun and lounge around.
Then, i slide open a wall that is on a track. KITCHEN! The kitchen is now part of the outdoor living space and I feel like I shoulkd be on TV cooking outdoors in this paradise. The two bedrooms are huge, both with full bathrooms. If you want a hot shower, wait until 5pm so the solar heats it up. I prefered the morning with room temperature as it gets very warm during the day. Another building with a TV ( which was never turned on) couch and some great board games. There is nothing more I need for the next 5 days.
The beach is an easy walk down the dirt road and is a must to go to for sunsets. You will run into howler monkeys at some point. Sit down and watch them, they are adorable. Once the sunsets and you are back at Casa De Mono, turn out all the lights. Stare up........the most amazing stars I have seen. I have been to 5 continents and over 30 countries.
The pool was cleaned daily, the manager of these properties always asked if there was anything we needed when we went into town. We were well taken care of, nothing more we needed!
There is not much I can add to the other reviews- Everything they say is true! We were there for eight days, didn't want to leave and can’t wait to go back. And as great as the pictures are, it is even better than that.
The house itself is perfect. Not too big, not too small, super-comfortable, very smartly laid out, with the indoor/outdoor feeling that is integral to the Central American experience. And beautifully designed and appointed. (the owners are to be commended for doing such a smart and wonderful job). We loved everything about it. Coffee in the morning watching the clouds, sitting in the pool watching the butterflies, sipping wine under amazingly starry skies.
Of course we spent long wonderful days at the beaches, surfing, body-surfing, exploring, taking hundreds of pictures. Found an outstanding surf instructor, Norwin, at the shop in town called Arena Caliente, where the also have the best selection of boards to rent. (same price everywhere- $10/day- you can rent at the beach at Playa Maderes but not at Playa Remanso )
Although we fixed dinner at the house a lot (great grill) we also had very good meals at restaurants nearby and in town (lobster everywhere!) . Our favorite place might be the deceptively simple looking Rancho Las Marias, on the road to town, where we had the best Arroz con Camarones imaginable and outstanding Lobster al Ajillo.
Binoculars are strongly suggested; birds, monkeys, beautiful vistas- all from the comfort of the shady, poolside veranda. Equalling entrancing are the sounds of the dozens of song-birds, parrots, monkeys and the breeze through the graceful flowering trees.
We saw and heard ZERO mosquitos. I got a only a few bites of some kind, unlike the hundreds (literally) I've gotten in Panama and Belize.
I should briefly mention that we also spent 3 days in Grenada at the start of our trip and a day in Managua at the end and had a great time everywhere. In our brief experience, Nicaragua is a wonderful, vibrant country of wonderful surprises, great food and super friendly people.
