NANTAHALA GORGE - LAKEFRONT MOUNTAIN CABIN BORDERING NATIONAL FOREST

Bryson City House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms + 1 loft, 1 full bathroom, 1 half bathroom, sleeps 4-6

Our home is situated at about a 3200 feet elevation. Our yard backs up to National Forest land and Queens Lake, which is said to be one of the cleanest and quietest in WNC, is directly in front of us. The lake is stocked with trout. It’s perfect for canoeing, fishing, and swimming (no jet-skis or motor boats!). While a boat put-in is directly in front of our house, the jumping off and fishing dock is down the road. Also down our road is a forest road that leads down to route 74. When it’s open, this is the short cut to the NOC and all points East. When it’s closed, it’s a lovely hike with waterfalls, mountain vistas and rock faces. Winding Stairs road was built and named in the late 1800s by the residents of Nantahala to improve their access to goods and services. To build the road, they used dynamite to blast out the sides of the mountain.

Day activities include walking, hiking, biking along the lake and down the forest road, swimming and boating, and fishing in the lake and at nearby rivers, streams and at nearby Otter Creek trout farm. We are close to several trail heads, waterfalls and rivers. We are also close to the NOC and other rafting and outdoor adventure outfitters. If you choose to venture farther away, easy day trips are to Bryson City, Cherokee and Franklin.

Our house has extensive covered porch area - useful for enjoying the outdoors in case of rain - and a nice grassy lawn area. We have a lower porch down the yard with its own grill closer to the lake which is a perfect place for drinks or lunch. We have a fire pit for making Smores or just sitting around. We think our cabin is the perfect mountain escape. The location is extremely peaceful and remote, truly 'away from it all.' We intentionally do not have television so that we can enjoy the many activities of being outdoors and in the mountains. However we do have a Bose iPod dock for playing music. We hope you will enjoy our unique find in the mountains as much as we have.

The house has been remodeled and feels new inside with original hardwood floors throughout. All of the interior furniture is also brand-new.

Sleeping Arrangements: We have 2 bedrooms and a loft sleeping area upstairs, and a futon couch downstairs. The upstairs Master bedroom has a queen size bed, and the guest bedroom has a full size bed. The loft area has a daybed that converts to sleep one or two (full size). The full bath is upstairs.

Home Amenities: We have a fully-stocked kitchen with both a french-press and electric coffee maker, utensils and dinnerware, a dishwasher, gas stove and refrigerator/freezer. There is a wood-stove in the living room that does a great job of warming the house in cold weather, and also electric heating. Though the home does have air-conditioning units, we open up the windows and enjoy the fresh air during the day, and cool air at night. The Master bedroom has its own porch. And finally, we do have a child-proof gate and pack-n-play for families with small children. We do offer sheets and bath towels for our guests' use.

NOC blog link: We wanted to share this blog about the pristine natural beauty of the area. Enjoy! http://nantahalaoutdoorcenter.blogspot.com/2011/07/nantahala-outdoor-center-paradise-in.html

What a great trip and what a beautiful home! My husband I had such an amazing time at this cabin. Everything was beautiful and so well kept, it really has everything you could possibly need. The deck off the master bedroom was a perfect place for morning coffee, while the deck off the yard was excellent for reading the paper in the sun. While it was too cold for swimming in the lake while we were there, we still loved walking around it at sunset and fishing from the bank and the small pier.

We can’t recommend the Otter Creek Trout Farm enough! The owner Alex gave us a tour of his little farm and prepped and cleaned three beautiful trout for us to take home. All we had to do was toss them on the grill whole and enjoy. They were delicious! We also day hiked a piece of the Appalachian Trail and met several thru-hikers along the way. It was nice to experience a little glimpse of their adventure on a scaled down size. The NOC was having junior kayaking trials while we were there and we got to watch a bit of that after taking in a great lunch at the River’s End Restaurant. I highly recommend the pizza. We took a day trip to Bryson City as well and we really enjoyed our visit to its little shops and lunch at Bryson City Cork and Bean.

If you are looking for a peaceful getaway to disconnect from the everyday hustle and bustle, this cabin is the place. It was so nice to come back to this quiet hideaway on a private lake after the day’s adventures and relax, read a good book, or toast some s’mores over the fire pit under a sky full of stars. Can’t wait to come back to this beautiful area. Fantastic!

Perfect for our Family - Peaceful Location w/ Lots to do!

This home was perfect for our family! We were looking for a well kept home in a peaceful location but still close to the activities we enjoy. We had so much fun canoeing, swimming, fishing, and hiking in the Nantahala Gorge/Mts and created many memories along the way. The home easily accommodated our family (2 adults 4 children). We loved the private setting, the many covered porches, and the lawn space which gave us room to play. We were close enough to the AT for a decent day hike, Otter Creek Trout Farm for a truly wonderful experience, and the NOC for our whitewater rafting trip. Most importantly though was the fact that we had excellent communications with the owners during the process and they were very helpful in guiding us. I highly recommend this home if you are looking for a good place to getaway.

We had a great time at this beautiful mountain home!

Our two young boys spent countless hours investigating the surroundings. We enjoyed having the lake so close for canoeing, swimming, and fishing. There are also plenty of streams, creeks, and waterfalls nearby for fishing. We even caught a few trout!

We hiked up a trail on Otter Creek Road and had a great view of the mountains from the fire tower. We also visited the Otter Creek Trout Farm on the way home. We had a great time there and even got to take home some of the freshest trout we have ever had.

The location is unique because you are remote, yet you can be close to busy surroundings in a short 30 minutes. We visited the Nantahala Outdoor Center - there are all kinds of great activities there. Our little group enjoyed a nice lunch on the river at the NOC. We also enjoyed a fun afternoon on nearby Lake Fontana, where they offer pontoon boats for rent.

The listing is extremely accurate and the photos are current. Everything in the cabin was in working order and well-maintained. For being slightly on the smaller side, the spaces in the home are used extremely well. The furnishings were very new, clean, and modern. It feels very open and is even great for entertaining. The owners are very communicative and we would absolutely recommend this location to friends and family.

We enjoyed our stay in this neat little cabin. It was very clean and comfortable and in a nice location. The owners were communicative and everything was as it was stated. The lake was a relaxing spot after a day of whitewater at NOC. Highly recommended!

Many thanks for a wonderful week at your place in the mountains. We had some great hikes and had a great place to return home each night. We hiked Tellico Gap to the Tower, and also the Joyce Kilmer National Park where they have some gigantic Hemlocks and Poplars. Kilmer was only 2000 feet elevation so it's better left for cooler weather, though only a couple of miles in length, and very easy.

We also hiked from Tellico Gap to Rocky Bald (the path in the opposite direction from the Tellico Gap parking area). It was wonderfully cool (about 4500 feet elevation) and gave a beautiful view. We found lots of sparkling mica in the rock and left some samples for you!

We were curious about the rest of Copper Ridge, so another day we entered from the other side at Burningtown Gap where we saw several AT campground areas including one of the shelters. We even wrote in the shelter log! We hiked and hiked and never found Tellico Bald, Black Bald, or Copper Ridge Bald. We were about to give up when we happened on Rocky Bald again, but from the opposite direction, so we hiked six miles that day! Don’t know what happened to those other balds we saw on the map, but it was a beautiful trail and we enjoyed the cool air at 5000 feet.

Locally, the trout farm on Otter Creek kept us supplied with freshly caught trout and chicken eggs. Also locally, there is a fantastic fresh produce stand where you can pick your own veggies (or buy them already picked) at the corner of White Oak Lane and Wayah Road. And Queen's Lake near the cabin provided many hours of cool, refreshing swimming, kayaking and canoeing for the younger couple that visited us for a couple of days, not to mention the pleasant two-mile walk along the lake after dinner and before bedtime.

Thanks again for having us at Nantalaina. The two window A/C units are functional and welcome if needed on those few days when it's unusually warm, although at night the temp fell to upper 50s & lower 60s, so we weren't really complaining at 85 degrees when Charlotte and Atlanta were experiencing 100 degrees!
