Having grown up in North Carolina, I moved to Alaska at the age of 21, where I lived and worked for 19 years and where all 3 of my boys were born. We moved back to NC in 2003 and lived in Hart House as a family until 2011. With 2 of my 3 boys away at school, my sons and I no longer needed such a big space but did not want to part with our beloved family home. So, the decision was made to move into a smaller property and offer Hart House to guests who wanted to experience a wonderful western North Carolina retreat together in one house - not in a hotel. It has been more rewarding than we could have imagined to know that groups of families, friends, business colleagues and wedding parties have come together to enjoy the Asheville area and the home that we love. If you are reading this...I hope that we can make your stay in the Asheville area the best that it can be!!
Mary Hart purchased this house in 2003
Hart House was purchased as a family home because I wanted to live, work, and raise my children in the Asheville area. Western North Carolina is beautiful, the people are genuine, the culture is outstanding, and there is more to do here than there is time in which to do it. It is wonderful to see people from other places enjoying the beauty and character of the Asheville area!
My favorite things about Hart House: sitting in front of one of the fireplaces on a winter's night; cooking for groups of friends or family - 3 ovens and lots of counter space make it SO much easier; sipping a cup of tea on the front porch on a peaceful, warm Spring morning; roasting marshmallows around the campfire pit in the lower yard; grilling dinner on the back porch while enjoying a glass of wine and music with my family and friends.
When deciding to celebrate my 30th I knew I wanted all of my close friends around me at a decent price. The Hart house was perfect, even with the temporary ice machine outage! We had about 21 people and the only issue we ran across was everyone showering at the same time (little hot water for obvious reasons). I would recommend this to anyone looking for a close gathering and I've even had friends who will celebrating their 30th this year love the concept of our weekend at the Hart house. Bring in the new decade!
The details to make you feel welcome are beyond compare! From the s'more fixings for the fire pit to the cofee vailable on both floors. Every detail made you feel welcome! We filled the beds and never felt crowded! Having a couple of gourmet cooks in the group, they loved the kitchen and displaying their skills. Thank you for making so many memories for us.
We recently stayed at Hart House for three nights with family out-of-town guests for my daughter's wedding in Asheville. The home comfortably accommodated all of our guests and offered a relaxed setting for conversations, games, meals and time to reconnect with each other. The home was well-appointed with ample supplies, towels, etc. for our large group. Beds were comfortable and the house felt spacious but cozy. No one felt on top of each other. We appreciated the fixin's for S'mores in the backyard fire pit and enjoyed visiting with the resident dogs, Thomas and Henry. Hart House was the perfect setting for our large family group to share some time together both before and after the wedding. We were all sad to leave and hope one day to return again!
This is a well-appointed and comfortable house and the pictures accurately reflect the accommodations. All of the little details are taken care of including kitchen and bathroom supplies, in addition to sheets and towels; nice not to have to worry about these things and the house was very clean. My siblings and spouses got together for a long weekend to hang together and do a little sightseeing and this house worked perfectly with large spaces to accommodate all 12 of us comfortably - front porch, back deck, great room. Visited Biltmore and downtown Asheville and tried 2 restaurants - Carmel's and Isa's Bistro and both had great food and service. Would definitely recommend this property to a large group that wanted to hang together.
The Hart House is a lovely, well-appointed, scenically-located home. This was the perfect spot for our work retreat.
We've been long overdue in reviewing this wonderful property. We got married at the Hart House last July and couldn't have had a more perfect time. We spent the week before the wedding at the house with family (17 total) and enjoyed hanging out on both porches and the big living areas. Even though we had a full house, we never felt crowded or cramped. The pictures really don't do this house justice--it is far lovelier in person and everything from sheets to towels to appliances are first rate.
Unfortunately, the week was probably the wettest July on record for the area and we were forced to move both the wedding ceremony and reception inside . Mary couldn't have been more helpful in letting us rearrange her entire home to accomodate our guests--and it all worked out perfectly with plenty of room inside and on the covered porches for everyone. My only regret is that we didn't have another week after the wedding to spend at the house. Perfect stay in every way! (and Henry and Thomas are the best dogs!)
