About VickyKass

One day after being homesick for the ocean for years, I went to Marblehead having never seen it before, and looked at several gross houses and figured ok, no house.. The person who was showing me around took me to the beach and said: 'This is why I love Marblehead.' I saw the small beach, the cove, the islands, and burst into tears. It looked just like our growing up home. It was almost the exact same view. There was no house for sale there, but oddly fate intervened, and this house is the one I saw as I turned around on that beach, my heart turning over, as I saw its beautiful self tucked into the cliff.

VickyKass purchased this cottage in 2007

Why VickyKass chose Marblehead

This is one of the most beautiful ocean spots in the world. If you love ocean than this may be the home for you. All but 2 rooms see ocean. It is everywhere. When the tide is high all you see is water. Feels like being on a boat, with more protection, and no drawbacks.

It is secluded, and yet only a few minutes into town.

What makes this cottage unique

This house enfolds people in its heart.

A Beachfront Shangri-La

  • 5 of 5
We agree with everything Ruth C. said in her July 2014 review, below.

A few additional comments about this very special place:

• Overall impression of the property: Just the right note of casual sophistication, and a remarkable spirit of generosity in the way everything was freely shared. We felt like guests in the home of gracious friends.

• We loved the fabulous, fully-equipped kitchen. You can tell the owners are foodies! There were all the amenities, in abundance. The centerpiece is a professional grade six-burner gas stove. There’s no outdoor grill, but the kitchen cooktop includes a powerful built-in grill which was a joy to use.

• Can’t overstate the convenience of the short walk to shopping. Just a picturesque stroll to restaurants, groceries, ice cream, muffins, coffee, and even a place to buy wine at 8 a.m.!

• Only a few steps to the beach. Even on Labor Day weekend, it wasn’t noisy or overly crowded. The other days, we had it mostly to ourselves. The water is on the chilly side, of course.....but we found that after few minutes we acclimated and enjoyed long dips. (As other reviewers suggested, water shoes or sandals are a good idea.)

• The house’s included single kayak is great fun, as are the double kayaks and other water goodies rentable right down the beach.

• The outside shower is delightful.

• Fine large washer and dryer.

• The shelves of excellent books and CDs were irresistible. We mostly ignored the books and music we’d brought, and instead enjoyed this new treasure trove.

• Parking for two cars on the property, and free street parking nearby.

Outstanding home!

Outstanding home!

My family of five stayed here for two weeks and it was wonderful. We are from the West Coast and always stay at the beach in the summer. This year we decided to stay on the East Coast and I am so glad we found this house.

My three young adult children had a great time kayaking and swimming. During high tide you can walk out to the nearby islands and explore. I went beach combing and found lots of sea glass and even a couple of golf balls.

The house is as beautiful as the pictures. It is in wonderful condition and well cared for. The view is breathtaking day or night and the sunrise every morning is outstanding. You just need to sit up in bed and take in the view.

The town of Marblehead is bigger than I pictured with lots of fun little shops and it is an easy walk into town. My husband and I would walk into town every morning for coffee at the local coffee shop.

The house is conveniently located for easy day trips. We went into Boston, Salem, Concord and Springfield.

I highly recommend this house to anyone who loves the beach. It is truly an outstanding house and I am glad I had the chance to stay here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind observations, and pleasure in our home, its beauty, and Marblehead. We are glad it worked out so well for all of you and that you loved it. That makes us happy. There was a tiny mistake when you wrote that you could walk out to the islands at high tide; we know you meant low tide.
Kids and adults kayak and swim to the island at high tide, paddleboarders too. You can explore it and on the far side is the open ocean. Thanks again. And your gift of lavender soap was so good!

Excellent getaway location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for a week at this wonderful home. Location was excellent for us. There is a small beach and an island steps away from the back patio. It was great to be able to sit on the deck upstairs or the patio downstairs and see the ocean, boats and islands. Actually saw many beautiful sun rises. Marblehead is small community so that you can walk to the stores, restaurants and sightseeing areas in less than 20 minutes. Nice and quiet for us. Very serene. The house has been updated throughout with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. If we are ever back to Boston I would stay here again.

Perfect location for girlfriends getaway weekend

  • 4 of 5
I live locally and have long admired this house when I've walked down to Gas House Beach, which is directly in front of the property....and the rental was fantastic. The bedrooms are simple and do the trick for basic accommodation, but what makes this house truly amazing is the upstairs level that overlooks the ocean. Literally, you have a 180 degree view of the sea. Walking upstairs each day and catching sight of the dawn breaking was simply breathtaking.

The gas fireplace took the chill off and left us cozy...and the spacious kitchen was perfect for cooking large communal dinners.

I'll definitely highly recommend this place to others visiting the area.
Beautiful!!

The only suggested improvement I could offer, to make it "5 stars"-- would be to address the view outside the windows/door of the room with two twin beds -- a privacy planting out there, even in large pots, would have been very nice -- and would have offered natural light and a beautiful view to that room, which is the only one of the 4 bedrooms without a nice ocean view. Because the neighbors entrance is right outside that door, we left the blinds drawn on all the neighbor side windows for the duration of the trip.

Owner's Response: We agree with you about everything you said! Privacy plantings (mixed evergreen trees actually) and entire patio redone will be completed before June 1st of this year. Thank you, you have good vision. We really appreciate the comments, and the feedback about what does not work is so helpful. We really are interested in people having a great place to relax, heart, body, mind and soul. Vicky and Neal

Absolutely delightful!

  • 5 of 5
Stayed here for a week in early June with family. The house itself is cozy and inviting and the location couldn't be more perfect! We spent most of our waking hours collecting sea glass on the beach (there's a TON) and exploring the nearby island. Our children loved that we could walk out there during low tide. The previous reviewer's suggestion to bring water shoes was spot on; we wore ours everywhere! It rained on and off the whole week, but the house was so comfortable and charming that we were just fine coming in from the rain. We had assumed that we'd eat out most nights but we were so pleased with the kitchen (and the awesome local grocery stores) that we went out for dinner exactly once.
Loved that town was a quick walk away but that the house is tucked away on a quiet street. Marblehead is one of those rare MA seaside towns that doesn't feel tourist-y -- it's the kind of place where store owners leave bowls of water out for the dogs and locals are friendly and quick to help. Definitely bring a GPS for navigating the one-way streets though!
The owners and property manager of the house were super sweet and helpful, and you can tell that they have put a lot of love into the house. Just scrolling through the pictures is bringing back happy memories! I can't imagine a more perfect beach cottage. Our entire family would love to return again next summer!

Stunning waterfront location, great house!

  • 5 of 5
My family of five, plus my mother, had the pleasure of staying here for a week in August. It was one of the best vacation locations ever. This house literally sits on a beach, with a beautiful view of the water in a protected harbor off the Atlantic. The house was built about two years ago, and it incorporates the nicest amenities (incredible master bathroom, gourmet cooks kitchen, etc.) but it is also very quaint and homey, with lovely art and antiques throughout.
There's all sorts of fun water toys and a kayak available for use; plus, there's a wonderful company that rents SUPs (stand up paddle boards) just across the road. We all loved the SUPs and spend a lot of time at the beach (but, even in August, that water is COLD!). Note that the beach is very rocky, so water shoes are definitely recommended. There's also a very fun island in the distance that is easily accessed by a land bridge at low tide.
A few things that I hadn't prepared for before our trip, but worked out just fine:
-No TV (my kids were a bit disappointed, but this was GREAT...we played tons of games...they have many there...and enjoyed the outside a LOT!)
-No A/C on the bottom floor, where the bedrooms are. Again, no big deal, as we opened all the windows and enjoyed the fresh breeze and listening to the water lap up the beach.
-Lots of locals use this beach (Gashouse Beach), so you will hear folks outside of your windows at all hours of the day. Never bad or crazy, though.
The caretaker was FABULOUS, too! Very, very helpful!!!
Also, Marblehead is so cute and so easy to walk to. 10 mins or less and you are in the middle of old Marblehead and great restaurants, shops and bars. We also enjoyed exploring Burial Hill (2 min walk) and Fort Sewel (4 min walk). It's very hilly in some areas, so you will want to wear good walking shoes and be prepared. The driving is Marblehead is tricky; lots of one-way streets (including the one on which this house is located). Make sure you have a good GPS!
We also considered staying in Salem, but so happy we chose Marblehead. Salem is far more touristy and busy.
Very, very happy with our stay and hope to return!

Owner's Response: We are thrilled that our home is as warm, snug, and beautiful to others as it is to us. We especially like the description that the cottage is literally on the beach. That describes it better than we may have done.

We didn't think to say the water was cold and it is, and the beach is sandy but does have rocks. Water shoes is a great idea.

The beach is small and can be crowded on the weekends, (Not your own private beach that belongs to the house, the one in front of it.) but it is quiet in the mornings and at night. There are no parties, or groups that go late. It is a family beach.

We will take tv off the list of available items to use, until we find it, or buy a new one. Thank you for letting us know.
