About VickyKass

One day after being homesick for the ocean for years, I went to Marblehead having never seen it before, and looked at several houses and figured ok, no house.. The person who was showing me around took me to the beach and said: 'This is why I love Marblehead.' I saw the small beach, the cove, the islands, and burst into tears. It looked just like the view in our childhood home. It was almost identical. There was no house for sale there, but oddly fate intervened, and this house that you may choose to rent is the one I saw as I turned around on that beach, my heart turning over, as I saw its beautiful self tucked into the cliff.

VickyKass purchased this cottage in 2007

Why VickyKass chose Marblehead

This is one of the most beautiful ocean spots, and one of the warmest, most welcoming of homes. ( 3 of 4 bed-rooms are oceanside, the 4th has its own working electric fireplace, and private terrace with french doors) When the tide is high ALL YOU SEE IS OCEAN. Feels like being on a boat, with more protection, and no drawbacks. The house is an upside down model where the living area is upstairs, as this has the most extensive view and breezes. The upper deck has an automatic extending canopy giving good shade both outside and inside when desired. During cooler times there is a beautiful stone fireplace fueled by gas.

It is secluded, and yet only a few minutes into town. Great privacy, easy to get to, quick from airport, or Boston downtown, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, or Maine. (Not a bad drive from NYC, New Jersey, Vermont, Maryland, Delaware.) Nearby Salem is a great town/small city to noodle around in with interesting stores, restaurants and the beautiful Peabody Essex Museum. Salem has its own harbor, and a very fast Ferry to downtown Boston.

What makes this cottage unique

This house enfolds people in its heart. It is fully our home, we love sharing it with other people. Many people tell us it is magical. Most everyone says it makes them feel welcomed as friends of the family.

It has almost everything anyone wants and more: all the pots and pans goblets, glasses, plates (probably 60 of them all kinds, antique and regular use) silverware, fish forks, lobster paraphernalia, bowls of every size and shape, coffee maker, every kitchen gadget for good cooking, and plenty of herbs, spices, etc etc.

There are so many places to sit and nest in this house that you can't do them all. Each bedroom has its own cosiness and character. Upstairs there are five to six different areas in which to convene. The kitchen breezily seats four and eight more people can cook easily together, while four to six can hover around the counters closer to the dining area. Then there is the two couch nook, the bar chair and small table for cards and drinks, the dining table seating eight easily, ten tightly.

Then the living room seats eight, and finally the study off the living area seats four, with a crows nest study off of it for one.

The lower deck has its own beach, outdoor shower, couch, chairs, hammock, bistro table and chairs. (Two large pseudo-bronze lions rest in the garden and on the sea wall, giving a sense of embrace.)

The side deck/cobble stone area has a large round table with umbrella for four to six.

The front of the house has a patio with seating for 6 to 8 with two distinct areas, one peeking at the ocean and sheltered by trees, the other a private tiny terrace off the cliff side french bedroom.

Second year in a row!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second year in a row we rented this wonderful home in Marblehead. We live in California but have a daughter attending school in Boston and a niece in New Hampshire so finding the perfect place for our Thanksgiving Holiday is important. This home has everything you need. It is beautiful, sitting right on a small beach with gorgeous views and incredibly comfortable. It is walking distance to the adorable downtown, 45 minutes to Boston and perfectly located for side trips to Concord or Salem. We have stayed a week both times and always wish we were staying longer. The owner is helpful, leaving a notebook with everything you need to know. The house is very clean and the furnishings are perfect. I can't say enough about this property but I am sure we will be back again next year!

Can't imagine a more perfect spot! We ranged in age from 1 week to sweet 70, & spent three glorious weeks in September.

The charming entry courtyard led to a wonderfully spacious waterside treasure. Upper level had the perfect open floor plan; beautifully outfitted & equipped large kitchen, generous wood farm table (sat 8) overlooking Little Harbor, & most comfortable lounging area with plenty of seating & big, stone, gas fireplace. So welcoming & family friendly!

We spent much of each day exploring Marblehead on foot, checking out all the fabulous parks, Marblehead Harbor, & of course, the charming town, with it's family-owned shops & restaurants. The flavor is truly special. Heading back to our beautiful beach cottage, we would enjoy the beach, the water, the fabulous deck that stretched all across the front. It just doesn't get better than this!!

Shame on me for not having written a review of this oasis. Life threw me a few curves. This place is home. It is comfortable, yet beautifully appointed. You want to scramble eggs & cook bacon even though you are on vacation. You don't have to, but you want to. My family felt so welcomed here. I hate to give it great reviews so that it doesn't become difficult to obtain. The property was immaculate, and I am fussy! Unlike other properties I have rented, all of the photos & amenities are accurate. No exaggeration here. This is a wonderful little jewel. Close to town. Lobster rolls at the Landing. Shopping at Bobbles (no commission just recommendations, lol). Can't wait to return. (Date of arrival is not accurate but doesn't give me an option to state my anticipated date)

A Beachfront Shangri-La

  • 5 of 5

We agree with everything Ruth C. said in her July 2014 review, below.

A few additional comments about this very special place:

• Overall impression of the property: Just the right note of casual sophistication, and a remarkable spirit of generosity in the way everything was freely shared. We felt like guests in the home of gracious friends.

• We loved the fabulous, fully-equipped kitchen. You can tell the owners are foodies! There were all the amenities, in abundance. The centerpiece is a professional grade six-burner gas stove. There’s no outdoor grill, but the kitchen cooktop includes a powerful built-in grill which was a joy to use.

• Can’t overstate the convenience of the short walk to shopping. Just a picturesque stroll to restaurants, groceries, ice cream, muffins, coffee, and even a place to buy wine at 8 a.m.!

• Only a few steps to the beach. Even on Labor Day weekend, it wasn’t noisy or overly crowded. The other days, we had it mostly to ourselves. The water is on the chilly side, of course.....but we found that after few minutes we acclimated and enjoyed long dips. (As other reviewers suggested, water shoes or sandals are a good idea.)

• The house’s included single kayak is great fun, as are the double kayaks and other water goodies rentable right down the beach.

• The outside shower is delightful.

• Fine large washer and dryer.

• The shelves of excellent books and CDs were irresistible. We mostly ignored the books and music we’d brought, and instead enjoyed this new treasure trove.

• Parking for two cars on the property, and free street parking nearby.

Outstanding home!

Outstanding home!

My family of five stayed here for two weeks and it was wonderful. We are from the West Coast and always stay at the beach in the summer. This year we decided to stay on the East Coast and I am so glad we found this house.

My three young adult children had a great time kayaking and swimming. During high tide you can walk out to the nearby islands and explore. I went beach combing and found lots of sea glass and even a couple of golf balls.

The house is as beautiful as the pictures. It is in wonderful condition and well cared for. The view is breathtaking day or night and the sunrise every morning is outstanding. You just need to sit up in bed and take in the view.

The town of Marblehead is bigger than I pictured with lots of fun little shops and it is an easy walk into town. My husband and I would walk into town every morning for coffee at the local coffee shop.

The house is conveniently located for easy day trips. We went into Boston, Salem, Concord and Springfield.

I highly recommend this house to anyone who loves the beach. It is truly an outstanding house and I am glad I had the chance to stay here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind observations, and pleasure in our home, its beauty, and Marblehead. We are glad it worked out so well for all of you and that you loved it. That makes us happy. There was a tiny mistake when you wrote that you could walk out to the islands at high tide; we know you meant low tide. Kids and adults kayak and swim to the island at high tide, paddleboarders too. You can explore it and on the far side is the open ocean. Thanks again. And your gift of lavender soap was so good!

Excellent getaway location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week at this wonderful home. Location was excellent for us. There is a small beach and an island steps away from the back patio. It was great to be able to sit on the deck upstairs or the patio downstairs and see the ocean, boats and islands. Actually saw many beautiful sun rises. Marblehead is small community so that you can walk to the stores, restaurants and sightseeing areas in less than 20 minutes. Nice and quiet for us. Very serene. The house has been updated throughout with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. If we are ever back to Boston I would stay here again.
