Photos and Description of the Galatina vacation apartment rental Self-catering apartment in heart of the Salento, near Adriatic/Ionian beaches

Escape to Italy: The 1 bedroom apartment is located in a 16th century palazzo in the historical heart of Galatina. It featured on Channel 4's A Place in the Sun with Amanda Lamb in 2007 (watch online now on Channel 4's '4oD') and has since been beautifully refurbished by award winning 'Puglia Estates' (also seen on TV). It sleeps 2 to 4 people, is self catering and is a perfect base for exploring the Salentine Peninsular. The property boasts original vaulted ceilings, 2 private roof terraces (spectacular views), a balcony over the cobbled streets, and right outside the door are shops, restaurants, cafes and gelato (ice-cream) shops open all year round! Stunning local scenery and only a short drive to either the Adriatic or the Ionian Seas make this an ideal location to take it easy and enjoy the dolce vita. There are miles of beaches, acres of olive groves, and gallons of fantastic wine! The apartment has heating/air-con, DVD/CD, projector, fridge, freezer, dishwasher & washing machin

Located in the historical Centre of Galatina (a Cittá d'Arte), the property is within 5 minutes walk of the town's restaurants, cafes, bakeries, shops (not forgetting the gelato ice-cream shops) and fine examples of the beautiful churches the town is famous for. Further afield the bustling, baroque provincial capital, Lecce, is only a 20 minute hop away. Or, if you prefer the sea, sand and amazing fish restaurants (not to mention underground grottos, fishing villages and beautiful coastal walks), Galatina is also within easy reach of the Ionian (Gallipoli, Santa Caterina, Porto Cesareo) and the Adriatic (Otranto, Torre dell'Orso, Castro) coastlines. Alberobello, the home of the trulli, Ostuni, the White City, and Sta. Maria di Leuca, the 'Lands End' of Puglia, are also just a day trip away. Having said this, why not find your own secluded paradise by exploring the fabulous country/coastal roads. Bicycles are available to use (for free!) from Galatina's Tourist Information Office.

Further details for this vacation apartment rental in Galatina, Italy

Additional Information: Why not watch the show featuring the property, right now! It can be watched on-line using Channel 4's '4 on demand' service. A link to the show can be found on the owner's website (see link below). As with many old properties in Italy, there are lots of steep stone stairs between floors (the ceilings are very high), some low doorways and very high roof terraces with waist high walls. As a result, the apartment may be unsuitable for people of reduced/impaired mobility or young children (under 10). It is the guests' responsibility to ensure the safety of their children. Having said this, the apartment is full of character and original features, and the high terraces afford spectacular views of Galatina and the surrounding area. Smokers are welcome, but we do request that guests only smoke outdoors on one of the two private roof terraces.

Welcome Packs: Paul, one of the owners of the apartment, now lives in Puglia. As a result he may be able to provide welcome food packs or special requests. Why worry about finding a supermarket on the first morning of your arrival, when you could just wake up and enjoy some real Italian coffee and the wonderful local produce on the roof terrace? How about adding that romantic touch by arriving to a chilled bottle of Prosecco (perfect for your first evening, watching the Italian sun set whilst sat on the top sun terrace), or maybe some flowers perhaps. Please contact us for prices and availability.

Festivities, Concerts and Markets: During the summer months, Galatina and the surrounding towns host many open air concerts, festivals and fabulous markets. More information can be found on the owner's website (see link below) and on the internet. Try searching for 'feste a Galatina' on Google, and then clicking on 'Translate this page' if necessary. More likely than not however, you'll just wander into the old town square one night and hear wonderful live music or get swept up in a local festival with lights, parades, music and dancing!

Everything you need and all top quality!

Northern Pete London
Review Submitted: August 19, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
I have just returned from staying at Jim and Paul's appartment in Galatina. First of all, the town. As soon as I arrived in the Piazza de San Pietro and got my first glimpse of Galatina, I knew it was going to be a great place to stay. Beautiful baroque churches, palazzos and all the shops you could need and more. A genuine, well conserved, deep South Italian experience.

As for the appartment, it was everything you see in the pictures and more. Very well finished with great attention to detail. Comfortable bed, very effective air-con, central but quiet, two great terraces to choose from and everything else you want to take on holiday but don't have room for; beach umbrella, coolbag etc. What I really liked was that no expense or thought had been spared. You didn't need to go out and buy loads of loo roll, dishwasher tabs, olive oil etc, it was all there. If you go in summer, you will live in the kitchen and first roof terrace till late in the evening. A suberb place to stay which I will recommend and return too!

Galatina is well placed for great excursions to either coast. All trips can be done in about an hour. Try Gallipoli, Sta Maria de Leuca, Porto Badisco, Porto Selvaggio and Torre Ulizzo.

I am really fussy when choosing holidays off the internet, trust me this place and its surroundings are top-notch. I actually preferred this region, The Salento, to the area that we went on to next, around Ostuni and Martina Franca. I will be back soon. Thank you Paul and Jim for being so professional in every respect.

fantastic visit in wonderful Galatina

Claudia281298 Newcastle NSW Australia
Review Submitted: November 18, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
My sister and I adored Galatina. Exploring the town center provided us with many hours of amusement -- drinking coffee and eating rustici, visiting with shopkeepers, getting lost and finding ourselves again (and again), trying to sort out the customary closing hours, using our meagre Italian phrases and so on.

We were astonished at the range of shops in such a small town and basically shopped ourselves silly. We had a wonderful time!

We used the local train to take day trips to Lecce and Otranto and that worked just fine for us. I know there's lots and lots of exploring to be done in the region (and we'd love to be able to do that in beach weather someday), but we totally enjoyed our car-less visit.

The apartment was everything we expected -- your web site does an excellent job of presenting it and it is really lovely. The bed was comfy, bedding plentiful, the place wonderfully roomy! We cooked a couple suppers and really appreciated being able to make tea, do our laundry and spread out. We also appreciated the basics on hand in the kitchen -- cooking oil, tea, etc.

We would both love to return someday and to bring our husbands and families."

Real Italy in a wonderful apartment

Stephen & Sue Kendal - Cumbria
Review Submitted: September 30, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My wife and I stayed in this apartment during the first two weeks in September and I only have positive things to say. We are regular renters of privately owned accommodation, often using holiday-rentals, and found this probably the best we have ever stayed in.

The apartment itself, notwithstanding the steep stairs, had all you could want, even inducing us to dine in on a couple of evenings. There was also many extras provided, beach chairs, umbrella, cool bag for example. Jim & Paul have set their stall out to provide an apartment where you really feel comfortable and at home.

Customer service, both prior to and during our holiday, was almost to the point of "what more can we possibly do for you". The apartment itself was all you could want and Galatina a lovely town to stay in. There were plenty of good quality restaurants in the town and close by.

For those who like the beach, both the Ionian and Adriatic coasts are close by and if you like your culture, Lecce only 30 mins drive away.

If you like your holidays sampling local food and culture this is the place for you!

We stayed for a week during August 2009, and really loved it. The apartment is furnished to a very high standard and makes a perfect base for exploring the beautiful town of Galatina and the region of Puglia.
Galatina is a small but vibrant town, and makes a perfect relaxing getaway. We strongly recommend it.

A wonderful experience from start to finish

Ken & Chris Highbury, North London
Review Submitted: August 19, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
As the title says, this was a wonderful experience from start to finish.

We've never before come across property owners who were so helpful and obliging in ensuring that all our needs we met, and this helped to ensure a great holiday.

Galatina is a lovely town, within 30 minutes drive of both the Adriatic and the Ionian, and even closer to Lecce, with its delightful historical centre.

The apartment is just a couple of minutes walk from the town centre, and bars, restaurants and shops for the essentials are therefore close at hand. Inside, the high vaulted ceilings and air conditioning ensure comfortable conditions even on the hottest days (temperatures outside reached 34/35 during our stay in August).

The sofas in the living room are exceptionally comfortable, and we slept well throughout our stay. The double doors from the kitchen onto the lower roof terrace make eating outdoors very easy, and the views from the upper terrace across the town and surrounding countryside are excellent. We were even treated to a grandstand view of a firework display from a neighbouring town during our stay.

The only downside to the accommodation - pointed out by the owners in the advertising for the apartment - are the rather steep stone stairs that lead both from ground to living/sleeping level, and then again to kitchen and roof. For this reason alone, there would be concerns about having small children in the apartment, or people with mobility problems.

This reservation aside, we'd have no hesitation in recommending Jim and Paul's property - comfortable, exceptionally well located, and very reasonably priced.
