Ourique Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedroom 4 en-suite bathrooms sleeps 8

This single storey traditional country house is set within 19 acres of unspoilt rolling alentejan countryside. There are panoramic views from all aspects. The high vaulted ceilings and wood shuttered windows keep it cool in the hot summer months, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove for the cool winter nights enable year round use of the property.

The large airy lounge has plenty of comfortable seating, TV, satellite channels inc sports, DVD, Wi-Fi, a selection of books and DVDs. French doors open onto a covered terrace overlooking the 15m pool area with its plentiful sun loungers and shaded areas. Dine on the terrace overlooking the pool- watching the amazing sunsets- breakfast on the kitchen terrace catching the morning sun. The kitchen is well equipped with an extensive range of quality utensils, crockery and cutlery and has a dining area. After a relaxing day by the pool and a great meal with fantastic local wines retire to one of the 4 bedrooms each with its own en-suite bathroom.

The Alentejo is an ideal place to take a holiday- one that can be relaxing or active. The location of Monte Novo dos Cachorros makes it a perfect base from which to explore the Baixo ( lower) Alentejo with its fantastic unspoilt West coast where there are traditional Portuguese resorts. Recently The Sunday Times Travel section has mentioned one of our favorites Vila Nova de Milfontes(40 mins drive) river and ocean beaches and great seafood restaurants- details in our info book in the house. Inland there are white washed towns steeped in history, vineyards such as Malhadina, and Herdade de Grous where we have sampled the fantastic red wines but they are just 2 of many producers in the Alentejo. If you like walking there are tracks from our gate- you can walk for hours through the forest of eucalyptus up and down the rolling hills dotted with oak trees. In the spring there is an abundance of wild flowers but with the heat of the summer the landscape dries and the land becomes golden the light can be ethereal, the cry of the kites echoing as you walk along. There is a large lake/ reservoir just 10mins drive where you can fish or even swim if you like. Horse riding can be arranged there's quad biking even hot ballooning at a local hotel.

Or you might simply want to relax and enjoy our home. The pool is large enough to enjoy a good swim- there are several terraces so if you want peace and quiet away from the pool you can do so.

There is a good supermarket in Ourique with a fresh fish counter. Our housekeeper will meet you and take you to the house. If there are any problems during your stay she is at the end of a mobile to help should you need it.

There are several small traditional restaurants locally serving simple cheap food- info available in the house.

We love our home in the Alentejo we hope you will too!

For large parties we have another house available 5 mins drive-prop no 1011182 Escola do Vale Guenim it sleeps 6

Why P Pilgrim chose Ourique

We fell in love with the Alentejo in 2005 whilst visiting friends

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our place in the sun-to recharge batteries-our home from home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

In 37 years of villas in Portugal- this is the best.

The quality and style is just to our tastes and we loved our stay here in your home away from home that you are obviously and justifiably proud of.We enjoyed the larger than average pool which has prompted us to new heights of fitness. We enjoyed the nearby reservoir and a general drive through the laid back countryside( oxen pulling ploughs!) and we gambled in the Atlantic surf.

All in all a blissful holiday in delightful surroundings from very generous hosts.

Oh! and PS. Maxine is a gem.

Portugal in a lovely rural setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved our 2 weeks at Villa Nova Cachorros surrounded by the rolling hills and beautiful sunsets. We are a group of long-time friends from Nth America and Australia and meet up somewhere interesting in Europe every 2 years.

We like to be in the countryside with the opportunity to make day trips to interesting places. The villa is in the real Portugal, set amongst working farms of cork trees, black pigs [for which the district is famous], sheep, goats and of course dogs. The house is spacious and well equipped for the 7 adults in our group-breakfast on the kitchen terrace and dinner on the large patio overlooking the pool each evening. The bedrooms are spacious and bathrooms as well- no problems sharing. We found the local supermarket in Ourique more than adequate and were happily surprised at the very reasonable prices of the fish and meat, delicious cheeses and other smallgoods let alone a good selection of local wines. We also visited some of the local small markets. The road in is a bit of a challenge, but driving slowly lets you take in the rural aspect and enjoy the sheep, cattle and the little hobbled black pony always on the road. Pam was always very responsive to all our requests and it was a pleasure to deal with her and Maxine her local manager. All in all a terrific fortnight. Thank you Pam!

Owner's Response: Helen, A first - visitors from NAmerica and Australia- great that you enjoyed our rural idyll !! W e have noticed a lot more visitors from N America especially as they tend to come to walk the Rota Vicentina- we have had some interesting conversations in restaurants on the West coast with our American visitors to the area !! Thanks for the info on some of the places you have visited - we are here at the moment doing maintenance but are planning days out to some of the places we haven't yet visited- Santiago do Cacem is top of the list for its Roman ruins and castle. Our house is off the main road and the road leading to it is not tarmaced but that's par for the course in Portugal - driving slightly more slowly enables us to view the gorgeous landscape . I am lucky to have a great manager who is English but has lived here for so long she is bilingual and Is so helpful to our guests ! So pleased you all had a lovely holiday and glad I could help you with the planning of your trip Pam

Luxury home from home!

What a wonderful 2 weeks we had at Cachorros. Family of 4, children aged 3 & 5.

As previous reviews have stated the photos don't do it justice. The place is immaculate. Clean & extremely well presented. We wanted for nothing. The layout works so well as everyone had their space. We particularly loved the mesh on the windows which meant we were able to have the windows open at night without making friends with Boris the spider (as we called him!).

Having 2 terraces is bliss. Sitting out on the veranda after our BBQ supper reading a book, supping some wine & watching the sun go down with just the sound of cow bells gently filling the air. Absolute heaven. So relaxing.

The pool is amazing, quite huge! The kids loved it & it meant we were able to sun bath on the loungers but be near at all times. Having gates to the pool too was an added bonus as then they understood their boundaries.

A car is essential & we had great fun exploring many of the beaches. The beaches are lovely, but do make a note of the tide times as that can catch you out. Having parasols, beach towels, beach bags & cool boxes to hand made it so easy to pack a picnic & just go out for the whole day. Things like that make such a difference!

A massive thank you to Pam & Maxine for all their help & information. Having Maxine just a call a way is reassuring & even Pam answered an email in 30 mins whilst we were there!

I could go on & on, but all I can say is go & experience it for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

We loved it so much we contacted Pam before we left to rebook for next year & hopefully another family (of 3) will be joining us. It's that spacious that it can easily accommodate 2 families.

Thank you Pam for a very relaxing holiday in your gorgeous home.

Owner's Response: Katy,Steve,Lottie and Ben. great to hear that as parents of 2 small children you managed to have some relaxation on your holiday and that Cachorros is as we thought- a great place for families. It's important to me to know that if any problems should arise that there is someone available to help-I know M is contactable locally and is always helpful-being married to a Portuguese man and part of the local community is very useful !! and I will always try and be available by email or telephone.I have reserved the 2 weeks that you have requested next summer and hope that your friends will be able to join you .Pam

Everything we could wish for!

  • 5 of 5

If you want luxury, space, peace and tranquility, then Monte Nova is the place for you.

We have just got back from our two week holiday which was everything we wished for.The villa is excellently equipped, very airy and cool, despite outside temperatures being in the mid 30s[centigrade]

It's location, once we drove 2 kms up the track was out of this world...360 degree views overlooking farmland, forests and the odd farmhouse, the silence only broken by birdsong and bells around the necks of grazing sheep and goats. The night skies were clear and full of stars. The swimming pool is fantastic and there are three patios/terraces to shelter from the midday heat.

Garvao and Ourique have all of the basics we needed, but since the roads are nearly empty, then it is very easy to venture further afield.Castro Verde has a large Intermarche as does Beja.

A trip to the coast took no more than 45 minutes...Vila Nova de Milfontes is well worth a visit and suits a couple like us to family groups....imagine a Cornish fishing village in a 1950s time warp...bliss!

We felt as if we had been away longer than two weeks, that was how easy it was to quickly unwind and relax.

Can't recommend it highly enough.Perfect.

Such a lovely relaxing Villa.

  • 5 of 5

An extremely clean well equipped Villa, lovely gardens with lemon trees, sadly too late for the apricots though. The far reaching views are outstanding over the Alentejo countryside, one hears the local sheep bells twice daily. The evenings are light up with an enormous array of bright stars. The large swimming pool is nicely protected from the refreshing evening wind. A network of tracks, makes for exploring by bicycle extremely interesting with a whole new perspective of the region. The people from the local village of Garvao are very friendly, and always offer to help. We shall return. R. Craig

Two weeks was far too short

  • 5 of 5

We came for a late summer holiday and, for once, chose to stay in just the one place for the whole time, two and a half weeks. It was excellent.

The house is exceptionally well designed, furnished, equipped and maintained. It's a pleasure to be there, and the 15m very private pool just invites you in. So we swam, read books, cooked and ate good food, and then swam again. We slowed down and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

The house is surrounded by open-ranging farm land with wandering flocks of sheep and more distant woodland. At that time of year all very dry and dun coloured. Sunsets were spectacular.

Ourique, the local town, is 10 km or so away, and has one useful supermarket and many little cafes which are, on the whole, quiet cheap and very welcoming. (We recommend the bus turn round kiosk for an early morning coffee and cake and the supermarket for good fresh fish and seafood.)

Ourique is an easy journey apart from the 2 km bumpy track to the house from the road. This track serves the two or three farms along the way and the timber lorries that pass by three or four times a day. Virtually no traffic, but very bumpy and dusty, though this does manage to pleasantly enhance the feeling of seclusion and distance away from the day to day world. The track is just about OK for small cars, but take care.

This part of Portugal seems to have done little to develop its tourist industry ~ you have to go out and look for things, but they are out there. Read the guides, take a SatNav and be prepared to drive for a bit. We found excellent restaurants, beaches, roman ruins and interesting old towns, all well worth visiting.

We loved the place and will be going again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely comments-I'm glad you managed to have such a relaxing holiday. The timber trucks were just about finished when we arrived after your stay-this is not a regular occurrence -the forests are well managed and replanted so I guess it will be some years before they harvest the Eucalyptus again ! I hope you visit us again-perhaps at a time of year when the landscape is completely different-green and lush and full of wildflowers in the spring.

A paradise awaits

If you are looking for a welcomed break, away from your traditional holiday resort abroad then this is the place to be. The property is outstanding, furnished to a very high specification and maintained to a very high standard.

Our flight was delayed and we did not reach our meeting place with Maxine until 23:00 hrs. This however was no problem for her and we arrived at the Villa 15 minutes later with some welcomed beer provide by Maxine. Maxine took the time to show us everything we needed to know to ensure we made the most of all the Villa had to offer.

The area in which the villa is situated is of outstanding beauty. By night you can see the most amazing array of stars, we were fortunate to see the Milky Way and several shooting stars! Hope our wishes come true!

We have already recommended this property to several of my friends and family and hope to return within the next 18 months.

The owner Pam was fantastic and kept us updated along the journey to our holiday. A last minute addition to the entourage was no problem and Pam contacted Maxine who made some adjustments prior to our arrival.

The one bit of advice I would give to anyone going to Portugal and needing car hire would be to make sure you use a reputable company, as this was the only subject from our holiday we could fault.

A huge thank you to both Pam and Maxine for the best Holiday so far.

Owner's Response: Hello to the Holders- sorry to hear of the rotten start to your holiday -delayed flights are a nightmare especially when you have children and then there is nothing worse than not being able to find the property you are renting -thats why it is important to me that I have a reliable, helpful manager in situ -Maxine -who will meet guests show them to the property and familiarise them with the house.I am pleased that you all had a lovely holiday and hope that you return to Cachorros next year. I will be in touch to find out which car rental company you used , and the problem you had with them ,so that I can warn other guests!! Pam
