Photos and Description of the Villafranca in Lunigiana vacation villa rental
Luxury Villa, Sleeps 6, Private Pool, Medieval Village Tuscan Hills 3 bathrooms

1 of 2 adverts on this site, 830932

Luxurious detached villa in large enclosed gardens; renovated to high specification. This is a former vicarage, (the church is closed so no bells to interrupt the peace of the countryside) It is light and airy villa, elegantly furnished, stylish and spacious. Modern kitchen & dining room is equipped with everything a chef could require, or dine on the shaded terrace with black granite table. Pool 9.5 x 4 x 1.5m with travertine paving, Heated outside shower; Loggia and BBQ surrounded by lawns, beyond are olive terraces and forest. On the 1st floor 3 bedrooms each with balcony, lovely views, extremely comfortable beds, beautiful white linen, and 4 bathrooms with quality fittings and Carrara marble tiles. The very comfortably furnished sitting room has a log fire, SKY, X box 360 and surround sound, shower room and utility on this floor. The villa is ideally situated on the edge of a medieval village in a totally unspoilt part of Tuscany, 10 km from the Autostrada with Pisa, Lucca, Florence, and several beaches all within easy driving distance.

Wild life and countryside: This is a paradise for country lovers; at dawn and dusk it is possible to see the occasional deer and even wild boar, as they venture from cover in search of food, they had historicaly come into the garden until we errected the fence which encloses the property. We recommend you bring a pair of binoculars to watch eagles and other rare birds as they soar above the hills and down the valleys. Don't worry if you do forget yours as there is a small pair in the house, all part of the service! Also there is plenty of walking immediately available, the meadows mountain top meadows are abundant with flowers and heavy with their perfume.

This sunlit land of chestnut covered hills crowned by medieval villages is easily accessable. You will enjoy the very best of Italy - wonderful landscapes, good food and a warm Italian welcome.

Culture and History: The region is scattered with castles built by the Malaspina family, the Brunella fortress of Aulla houses the Lunigiana Museum of natural History. The castle at Villafranca was ocupied by the Germanys during the second world war, Before they left they blew it up, it's ruin remains.

Genoa; European capital of culture for 2004 is a 1hr drive and well worth a visit. Florence is 1.5hrs drive, or Lucca 1hr drive a delightful city; hire a bike and pedal around the city walls. Parma for the opera 1hr away. Pisa for it's culture is also 1hr away. You can take the train to all these places from villafranca

The sea is readily accessible from Marinella, southwards there are shallow, sandy beaches; whilst at Lerici and the Gulf of Poets (where Shelley drowned, Byron swam and D. H. Lawrence meditated) it is rocky. Further on from Lerici you find the Cinque Terre - five famous fishing villages, which are extremely picturesque. It is possible to take a boat from Lerici to the Cinque Terre.

Lunigiana: Lunigiana derives its name from the Roman port of Luni at the mouth of the river Magra, destroyed by the Normans. Historic sites are not restricted to roman remains, the Luni figures date back to 3000 BC, Lunigiana, the northern corner of Tuscany, is an unspoiled area of breathtaking natural beauty set between the Apennine mountains and the Mediterranean sea. There are countless natural curiosities such as the caves near Equi Terme, site of the natural sulphur baths.

Unknown to the crowds, yet close to the cities and The Cinque Terre. Lunigiana links the Gulf of Poets and the coastal province of Liguria to the west with the Apennines (made famous by Eric Newby's book Love and War in the Apennines) in the northeast. To the southeast the region is dominated by the mountains of the Parco Alpi Apuane (from where Michelangelo choose the marble for his statues).

In winter, the nearest ski resort is Zeri & Ceretto approx 1-1.5hrs drive away.

About Lynn and Bill Taylor

We are both English working in the UK, in 1989 we visited Tuscany many times searching for a holiday home and eventually discovered a small house in the village of Irola. Villa Ariola is the second house we’ve had here. We have a building company in the UK, and have renovated many properties, Villa Ariola took 14 months to complete, with carefully chosen Italian materials to compliment the style of the house. Every time we open the front door it never fails to wow us. Even though we only get to enjoy the house a few times a year, the house is part of our body and soul. It hurts to leave and we are always longing to be back - When we retire we will live in Italy permanently, until then we are able to share our villa with you!

Lynn and Bill Taylor purchased this villa in 2007
Why Lynn and Bill Taylor chose Villafranca in Lunigiana

Lunigiana is known as undiscovered Tuscany we love waking up to the sunshine and beauty of nature. It is lovely to walk in the forest collecting wild herbs, fruits, nuts and mushrooms. We also enjoy the wildlife - the swallows, eagles, wild boar, dear, badgers and the fireflies at night. We never tire of the landscape it is so beautiful dramatic and completely unspoilt. Sometimes we like to sit outside a bar and watch the world go by. Occasionally we go into town for lunch and shopping. Often we go for dinner to one of the excellent restaurants close by or down to the sea for the best fish restaurants anywhere on the Mediterranean. Florence Pisa and Lucca are close, all the major attractions of Tuscany within easy reach, we tend not to travel far enjoying the Villa pool and garden.

What makes this villa unique

Villa Ariola is away from the hustle and bustle yet it is close to the beaches, the mountains, the main cities of Lucca, Florence and Pisa, and to all the essential facilities (supermarket, restaurants). It is your oasis. During the summer the Italians that are able leave the sea side and cities to the annual mixture of heat mosquitoes and tourists, they head for the hills where the air is cleaner cooler and calmer. We have written a comprehensive 'Guide for Guests' we describe the beaches recommend lots of restaurants, places of interest boat trips and scenic drives to help you get the very best from your holiday. “When in Rome do as the Romans do”

Submitted: April 13, 2013 Stayed: September 2012
The photos of the house do not do it justice, it is luxuriously spacious, tastefully furnished, well maintained and everything was of high quality. Myself my son and daughter stayed at this beautiful villa, it was perfect for us in every way, my children are young adults and need ‘their’ space, this property created just that. The grounds are huge, with seating areas dotted about under shaded trees. The pool was lovely with gentle steps, which I liked to ease myself in. The house is completely clean, with gleaming marble bathrooms and the original terrazzo floors. The kitchen was so well equipped and spacious it was a pleasure to cook. The views of the mountains from the terraces were lovely, the wildlife amazing. Beds comfy, nice white linen etc. If it wasn’t for my kid’s determination to see Florence I would have happily not moved out of the villa for the whole week.

Would highly recommend this property

Beautiful house and grounds

This is a stunningly beautiful house and pool with lots of space.
It was spotlessly clean and well maintained, with everything you would need for a comfortable stay.Everything was of a high quality, even down to the pool towels.
Nearby Pontremoli was an interesting town which had a Medieval festival while we were there, further afield we loved visiting La Spezia, and taking a boat trip to the Cinque Terre.
The area is all the more interesting because it is slightly away from the tourist beat, but this means that you can't rely on vast amounts of tourist information. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the speed of internet connection (better than at home) and so we were able to do research in that way.

What a beautiful villa, so spacious which was ideal for us and our 3 teenage boys, my wife loved the kitchen it was better equipped than we have at home.

When we finally managed to drag ourselves away from the villa, we went to the Cinque terra, we can highly recommend it, a fabulous boat trip took us to the 5 villages, we ate great seafood in one of the many restaurant.

Thank you for the experience, maybe one day we will return.

We had a lovely stay in your house, it felt like a real home from home. All the kid’s outdoor games and DVD’S were great too, I had actually brought a suitcase full of games and toys, and they didn’t come out once!! It was great.

We hope your cleaner found we had left everywhere tidy and clean, I don’t know if I could bear to rent out such a lovely place

Thanks again

We loved Italy, the food, the Italians, and the property, the perfect holiday for us. We walked in the forest for miles, it was so peaceful, and the bird song was beautiful, the old part of the village enchanting, like going back hundreds of years.

The guide for guests was very useful, helped with restaurants and generally to find our way around. Thank you so much for the use of your house, we had a lovely holiday.
