Although this is a tranquil village location it is only 12 km/7 miles from the local town of Pescia which is well serviced by shops, supermarkets and a Saturday market. A car is recommended however transfers to and from the airport can be arranged and there is a local bus to Pescia, so a car is not absolutely necessary. There is a mainline rail station in Pescia providing easy hassle free access to Pisa (airport), Florence, Viareggio (the beach) and beyond.
The village has a Post office, a bar with a grocery shop (Bar Marina), three large restaurants, the closest is about 10 minutes walk from the house.
Bar Marina - a short stroll from the house, serves light meals, drinks and has a well stocked shop. Bookings can be made for meals prepared and served by the friendly family owners- the home made pasta is delicious and highly recommended. The owner will sell his own wine if asked - this is organic and delicious, try it!!!
Restaurant La Pieve - family owned, traditional recepies handed down through the generations, delicious food at a reasonable price
Sandrino - also very good traditional food,
Da Carla - lovely pizza, great food, also has a lake for fishing
There is a bar/tennis court about 10 minutes walk from the house. Between Cartelvecchio and Pescia there is a hotel with an outdoor swimming pool which can be used by members of the public.
There is an ambulance based in the village with a First Aid Centre and a local doctor twice a week.
The area is very popular with local walkers and mountain bikers.
The region is full of historical treasures - the village itself boasts ancient and recently restored murals underneath the village chapel. The larger church 'Pieve' is a beautifully constructed and restored church which must be visited.

Castelvecchio is at the centre of 10 medieval castles set on hilltops around the town of Pescia, The area is known as 'Svizzera-Pesciatina' which describes the alpine nature of the countryside in which the villages are set. The village dates back to the 10th century and consists mainly of old properties which make up the castle wall. The ancient church 'Pieve' (still used and recently renovated) which stands just outside the village was originaly built by the Romans in the 10th century. The apartment for rent is part of a family house which forms part of the original castle walls and garden. The apartment has recently been redecorateded and many original features remain. The location of the house is within the walled village where cars cannot get access - less than five minutes walk from where you can safely park your car. Castelvecchio is well placed for visiting local attractions - it is half an hour's drive from Lucca and an hour's drive from Pisa, Florence, the beach etc.
