REVIEW OF STAY IN PACENTRO

  • 5 of 5
Pacentro is beautiful - we were absolutely captivated by it and can't wait to return! What spectacularly beautiful and varied scenery - and charming town. The house is perfect - the terraces make it very special. The house is well equipped and comfortable. We walked most days - we couldn't get enough of the wonderful walking - glorious sunshine, snow capped mountains, spectacular 360 degree views - amazing. The restaurants are interesting and varied and much cheaper than other parts of Italy. The Caldora - slow food restaurant is wonderful!
Lots of useful information in the house - walking maps, sightseeing information etc. We managed one trip out to the colourful market in Sulmona, but the house and village and local walking was more than enough for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Can't wait to return!

Owner's Response: Liz and Ralph had a great time. This was their first visit to Italy and they were amazed by how friendly everyone in the village was. They were always greeted with buon giorno or bouna sera as they met the villagers in the narrow streets, or in the shops. Something they had not experienced before. People often chatted to them in the cafes. Although they didn't speak Italian there is usually someone around who has spent time in the US or Australia. I think we have made some converts to Italy!!

INCREDIBLE HISTORIC HOME IN IDEAL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We had a magical experience staying at this lovely property in Pacentro. It was ideally located on the edge of the village, with easy access to street parking and within a quick walk to wonderful amenities and short drive to other nearby villages and towns. The home was spacious, well-appointed and very functional for our multi-generational family, while still retaining its historic charm and loads of character. The property surrounding the house was gorgeous and spacious (unique to this home as most do not have extra land surrounding them), with unobstructed views of the mountains and the ravine below. It was private and perfect for children to play and explore (supervised), or just to sit outside and relax. It seemed we experienced every season while we were there, with snow and cold when we arrived, to warm and sunny, to rain and wind. In all circumstances, the scenery was stunning and the house remained comfortable.

Important to mention is that this is an ancient hilltop town, so there are areas that are only accessed by steep, narrow streets and stairways. The houses are built into the hillside, so they too are on multiple floors with stairs. This was not an issue for us at all, but may need to be taken into consideration for those who aren't mobile or who have babies/toddlers.

As previously mentioned by others, the residents of the village were wonderful, friendly and helpful. We were warmly welcomed and felt as though we were able to truly immerse ourselves into the community and culture.

We found Mary, the owner, to be an absolute pleasure to work with while arranging our trip. She was very straightforward, communicated promptly and ensured that we had extremely detailed and valuable information needed to find our way around the house, the village and the surrounding areas.

The only thing we wish we could have changed was the length of our stay. It was sad when we had to leave. Our time in Pacentro was amazing and we are truly unable to describe our experience. We are so lucky to have had the ability to bring our children here - what a fantastic first impression of Italy for them! These memories will be treasured forever. Staying at this property only made it more special. We hope to have the opportunity to return very soon. 100% positive experience in every way.

Owner's Response: I am glad that Chrissie and her family enjoyed Pacentro so much. It is lovely to hear that other people can appreciate the friendliness of the town and the uniqueness of the position of our house, overlooking a tranquil ravine but minutes away from a bustling village.

PERFECT VILLAGE STAY IN ABRUZZO

  • 5 of 5
We loved staying in this picturesque home in the charming village of Pacentro. The two-bedroom two bath home with kitchen, living room and stunning garden views of the mountains was a fantastic and romantic place for two couples both celebrating our 25th anniversaries. The owner, Mary provided wonderful, and detailed and helpful information on the house, the village, restaurants and day trips. The home was perfect for us. We enjoyed the garden every morning for breakfast, even picking fresh rosemary for our omelets. The restaurants in town are fantastic and with 5 or 6 of them - you can enjoy the village. The townspeople though few speak English are so very accommodating and helpful. We had a wonderful tour of the castle by Enio) , a fabulous restaurant recommendation up in the mountains and our evening at Caldora - the award-winning restaurant in town was magnificent. Sulmona, is a lovely short ride away and so worth seeing. We loved our walks through the village at night and during the day....so lovely. The terracotta artist Vitucci Franca and the stone carver Ferdinando deAngelis with his workshop near the castle were just lovely people. The home was so comfortable, simply decorated with a full kitchen, comfortable living room and comfortable bedrooms too. The drive from Rome was easy (just under 2 hours) and we drove to several villages in Abruzzo very easily with the help of GPS. We also enjoyed walking in the hills and just loved the village itself, our morning coffees and the peace of the mountains. We highly recommend this home and village - for its location, the village - restaurants, shops, sights, walks and great location.

A GREAT TIME AT PACENTRO

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time in Pacentro. We come from the west coast of the US and were visiting in Europe this last few months. Pacentro is absolutely beautiful and captivating. If you want to experience Europe as it was centuries ago then this is the place to go. The village is full of charm and the setting, with hills all around, is stunning. As keen walkers we appreciated walking straight out of the house onto well marked trekking paths.

The house was charming, very well appointed and lovely and clean. We especially enjoyed sitting on the patio under the sunshade absorbing the peace of the valley below, and yet knowing that it was only a short walk up to all the bustle of village life.
The people of Pacentro were very friendly and everything we needed, shops, pharmacy, ATM machine, restaurants, and cafes were all available only a few minutes stroll away.

We ventured off for day trips to other villages and there is endless beautiful unspoilt landscape to explore. It was a very special holiday.

REAL ITALY

  • 4 of 5
We loved Pacentro and this house is perfectly situated on the edge of the village with stunning views, giving a rural feel, but within walking distance you have 2 cafe/bars, restaurants, bakery and shops – it was a treat to go to the shop in the square where Monia sells gorgeous ricotta and pecorino made by her mum from her father’s sheep/goats! We spent our time taking walks around the friendly and interesting village (we couldn't stop taking photos!), down (and back up!) to the ravine, picking wild asparagus, meeting the lovely goats and sheep, up to the pass in the park, a challenging walk to Campo di Giove and relaxing in the garden.
Thank you Mary.

TOURISTS WITHOUT A CAR!

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I had such a wonderful time in Pacentro. The village was so picturesque and the villagers so friendly. We speak a little Italian and soon made friends with the local people who seemed to be genuinely pleased to see us in their beautiful village, they really made our stay memorable. It was great just wandering through the narrow streets to the house and as Pacentro is set in the Majella National Park, using the trecking map in the house we were able to organise beautiful long circular walks directly from the village. We also took the very handy bus into the nearest big town Sulmona for market day which was quite an experience. They sell absolutely everything, from designer bags to garden plants. We bought some wonderful Pecorino cheese from an old lady selling her own produce. We also made a round trip on the bus to the scenic mountain village of Scanno where the women still wear Turkish Costumes! Otherwise we just stayed in Pacentro. It had everything we wanted. Good walks, a lovely garden to sit in, bank, Post office, food shops and really wonderful bars and restaurants. We also hired mountain bikes from the Tourist Information Office in Pacentro, they cost just €5 an hour and we went on some fantastic cycle rides up into the National Park, the terrain is very steep and it was quite hard going but the views from the top of the mountain were stupendous and well worth the effort. We were totally self-sufficient using public transport, flying into Rome we spent two nights there seeing the sights, and then took a bus from Tiburtina station in Rome to Sulmona. It was lovely riding through the Appenines with stupendous views and not having to worry about driving. We caught a connecting bus up to Pacentro as Mary suggested, it was great not having to pay for car hire, which is a real added expense and we felt that we got to know the area a lot better through using public transport, we would highly recommend it.
