The Olmares manor house is the principle house in the tiny village of Basieda (Potes 15km), Cantabria, North Spain. It is built in the local traditional style, within a walled enclosure thus affording complete privacy in the garden without affecting the fantastic views across the valley below to the high peaks beyond. The living quarters are on 3 floors. The first floor has the huge and beautiful kitchen/dining area with its magnificent traditional stone hearth. This is a splendid, historic house ideally suited to those who appreciate comfort – good beds, cotton sheets, central heating etc. It’s perfect for relaxing - sunbathing or enjoying the marvelous local walks. This part of the Liebana Valley remains unspoilt with first rate bird-watching and wildflowers. The coast with its white sandy beaches is an hour away through the dramatic Hermida gorge. A 25% reduction on P&O Ferries to Bilbao can be arranged through Holiday Rentals.

Basieda is a remote hamlet built into the mountainside 15km from Potes in the Picos de Europa. The Picos de Europa is the most impressive part of the Cordillera de Cantabrica mountain range of the North of Spain. Basieda can be reached by ferry to Santander or Bilbao, by flights to Santander, Bilbao or Madrid or by road through France.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Please enquire for special prices for 2 or 4 people. Prices given are for up to 8 people, there is a small additional charge for each extra person. Also there is a refundable deposit of €30 per person against breakages or extra cleaning. We ask for a 25% deposit to confirm the booking and the balance is payable on arrival. In the event of cancellation less than 12 weeks before your stay the 25% deposit is non-refundable.
  • Prices include water, wood, electricity, central heating, bed linen (real sheets, not nylon), towels & tea towels.
    Water is supplied direct from the mountain streams and this is drinkable, we like it, but you may prefer to drink bottled water.

Notes: The living quarters are on 3 floors. The ground floor has a big entrance hall and our store room. The first floor has the huge and beautiful kitchen/dining area with its magnificent traditional stone hearth, a bedroom with double bed and en-suite bathroom, another double bedroom with a second bathroom and utility room. On the next floor there are two double bed bedrooms, one twin bed bedroom and one single bedroom, a bathroom and a wonderful living room with French windows and fantastic views. The top floor has another lovely sitting room with satellite TV, VCR and DVD player, one single bedroom, one with double bed and another bathroom.

Further details for this vacation farmhouse rental in Cantabria, Spain

The house belonged to the Monasterio family – they produced several minor painters and the court musician Jesus de Monasterio, who’s statue can be seen in Potes. We, Suzanne Strevens and Richard Beazley, bought the house some 15 years ago and lived there until our family grew up. We now live in an apartment near the house and are on hand to answer any questions and give some advice on exploring, walking, birding etc. although should you just want to chill out and relax we will leave you in peace!

The climate of this sheltered valley is almost Mediterranean - a genuine sunny, warm, dry microclimate. It’s worth noting that the sea with a fantastic beach is just an hour away for when you want a sea change! The nearest town for shopping is Potes, 15km away. There are 2 good local restaurants - both quite cheap but one posher than the other! Delicious bread baked in wood-fired ovens is brought up the mountain every second day.

RELAX: de-stress and enjoy the beauty and peace of this unspoilt place. Take in the pure air, the sun, the bright starry nights - do nothing or... WALK: the walking round here is marvelous and as easy or difficult as you choose. You will find a map of walks in the house. We will help and advise when you want. BIRDING, FLOWERS and TREES: Quite exceptional for its variety of all these due to its remoteness. The dawn chorus can make you feel happy to be alive and the plentifulness and variety of flowers can make a walk seem like going through a perfect rock garden. HISTORICAL INTEREST: Liebana is steeped in history so there are lots of places to visit - many of them within walking distance of Basieda.

Other Activities: canoeing, quad biking, bird watching, wild flowers and butterflies.

The perfect getaway

My family and I have just returned from our third trip to Olmares in the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain. The house is so beautiful and well situated that it is difficult to make ourselves do anything other than lean out the windows and stare at the fantastic views or sit in the garden and soak up the atmosphere. Having said that, there is much to do. We have taken many walks which start from the house ranging from a stroll down to the stream which is perfect for little children to a challenging hike through the forest behind Basieda. The town of Potes is a twenty minute drive away and has excellent restaurants, several grocery stores and lovely little lanes to wander down. We have also twice taken the cable car to the top of Fuente De and then walked down through spectacular scenery.

As the house at Olmares is so big it is a great place to holiday with friends- we have fit up to seven adults and six children in at once. It is always clean and well equipped. Richard is also very helpful in recommending good restaurants nearby, walks to take and sites to see. I cannot recommend it more highly. My only hesitation in giving Olmares a glowing review is that too many people will discover our favourite getaway!
