Located on the Sunny Westside of Kauai, in the historical sugar plantation area, these two bedroom, one/two bathroom plantation-style homes are just across the street from the blue Pacific Ocean. These getaways offer panoramic ocean and mountain views and are set in beautifully landscaped private yards, filled with papayas, bananas, coconuts and tropical flowers. Each room has attractive furniture and ceiling fans. Hawaiian quilts and local artwork decorate the walls.
The Westside of Kauai has the sunniest and warmest weather year-round and is characterized by its unspoiled and uncrowded beaches. Hawaii's longest sandy beach starts in front of the homes and stretches for 8 miles west to the beginning of the world famous Na Pali Cliffs.
Watch the sunrise from your house, pick a papaya off a tree in the yard, have a fresh cup of Kauai coffee grown 15 minutes away. Relax, listen to the waves on the beach, look at the stars, forget about life for awhile... this is the way Hawaii used to be!
I want to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the lovely beachfront rental, Hale Lehua. It could not have been better for our family. It fit our needs perfectly. Kauai is certainly the best island of the Hawaiian chain, and the West Side clearly is our favorite. Like the locals say, the West is the Best. It is so much quieter and laid-back as compared to the tourist centers of Poipu or Hanalei, and the plantation-style house is charming, functional, and comfortable. We enjoyed being in Hawaii and not having to deal with mosquitos. A huge plus! We loved the proximity of your rental…..right across the street from the ocean, close to the small town of Waimea for food shopping and the Waimea Brewery for evenings out, Waimea Canyon at the back door, and the secluded beaches of Polihali right down the road. The early morning road noise and roosters mentioned by other reviewers were not a problem for us. It's part of West Side experience in a predominantly local neighborhood, as opposed to a tourist area. We saw it as part of the charm. I highly recommend this vacation rental. A great value and location.
We stayed in the Hibiscus unit, which is one of 3 on this property. It has 2 bedrooms and a small bathroom on the lower floor, and a good sized kitchen/living room/balcony area on the second floor. You need to be able to climb one flight of stairs. The unit is clean, well kept, and nicely furnished. The photo on the vrbo ad is of another unit and looks like it is taken from the HIbiscus unit balcony, but the Hibiscus building looks similar. The property itself is located in a residential neighborhood in Kekaha, a sleepy old plantation town in west Kauai. The nearest "larger" town is a few miles away in Waimea, and there are some markets and restaurants there (although most of the restaurants are closed for dinner.) This is not a place to go if you want a tourist town full of restaurants, bars, and souvenir and t shirt shops. It's good if you want to stay in a local town and cook your own dinners. We stayed here because we like to hike, and the access to Kokee and Waimea Canyon State Parks is excellent. We did some great hikes there, and also did a day boat tour of the Na Pali coast with LIko tours, and this worked our well and was very scenic and enjoyable. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen fine. I would have given it 5 stars except for 3 things: 1) between the property and the ocean there is a road. It is quiet all night, but in the early morning there is some noise of cars rushing by as locals head to work; 2) there is no air conditioning and the unit gets quite hot when you lock it up, leave all day, and then return. It then takes a while to cool off after opening all exterior ventilation and turning on the fans; 3) lots of wild rooster noise (wild rooster noise is a problem all over Kauai, but is more here than in more touristy developments where the management seems to keep them under better control.) I live on Maui where there are also some wild chickens (not as bad as Kauai) so I can ignore these, but they may bother you. If you are bothered by noise you may want to use ear plugs in the early mornings due to the cars and roosters. That being said, the value for your money is excellent, and I would recommend it and would definitely stay here again.
The house was as described in the listing. Modern amenities and well taken care of. The owner had just repainted the deck and pressure washed the house before we arrived for our 7 day stay. We made good use of the Weber BBQ and the beach chairs/mats & boogie boards. The house also had an island tour guidebook that we utilized. We made last minute arrangements for our stay and the owners were easy to work with and very communicative. There is road noise especially in the weekday mornings with people headed to work. The sound of the waves on the rocks across the street in the quieter times more than made up for the road noise. Our two complaints: the floors could probably go for a sweep or swiffer - we had to dust off our feet each time we got into bed after walking around on the wood floors. Also, the bicycles need some TLC - we were hoping to use them during our visit but declined based on their condition. Other than those two small items we highly recommend this VRBO to anyone interested. Fantastic sunsets from the porch and close to the best beach on the island!
