Northport Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5). Fireplace, and Master Suite w/inside balcony.

Heron Cottage - European Charm, Gothic Revival: our wonderful vacation home.

This fabulous, new, two-bedroom, two-bath cottage was the inspiration of very creative designers and builders and has been lovingly furnished.

Enjoy the gas fireplace; white oak hardwood floors; tiled baths; soaring ceilings; hand-crafted cabinets and cherry countertops in our charming, designer kitchen; and covered porches for entertaining or cocktails.

A great gas fireplace for cool days and evenings. Central Air Conditioning and ceiling fans make this one of the most comfortable cottages for hot, summer days.

In a quaint, lovely village, and just 3 blocks from the shores of Northport Bay and just around the corner from the beautiful NEW golf course!

Our great rates reflect our desire for great guests who appreciate this terrific cottage and it's ENCHANTING spaces!

This European-style cottage with its steeply pitched roof, arched windows, and cedar shake siding, makes an idyllic vacation rental.

The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is just north of the village, next to the Leelanau State Park and Sand Dunes. Walk to beaches, golf course, shops, restaurants and bowling alley!

Live here for a spell and weave dreams of the future! Come to relax, to rejuvenate!

The Heart of the House: Air Conditioning! Comfortable, designer lounges and original paintings enhance the living room with its white oak floors and vaulted ceiling with stained-glass fan high above. The classic, Adams-style gas fireplace is easy to 'light' for a cozy evening if the night is chilly.

The Kitchen: Ahh! I love this kitchen! So soft white, so custom, so wonderful! Cherry countertops, white oak floors, and all the amenities: microwave, gas stove, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer, Kohler porcelain double sink, and special fixtures. Designer dinnerware and tons of styles of wine glasses. We even have a custom nook for the wonderful Leelanau wines!

The dining room compliments the living room with a white oak, claw-foot dining table and elegant, comfortable Parsons chairs, and Frank Lloyd Wright style stained-glass pendant light.

A delightful bedroom down has a splendid bay window and bench window seat. The tiled bathroom includes a large walk-in shower, pedestal sink, and fun paintings. (It has a loo, too!)

The upstairs comprises the master bedroom suite including a sitting room and large master bath with tile floors, two vessel sinks, large walk-in shower (and loo). The master bedroom opens to the living room below from a charming balcony, closed off with French doors, and also overlooking the fireplace below.

Heron Cottage offers a quiet porch filled with wicker and flooded with sun in the afternoon. Always a cool breeze here. The sunsets are fabulous!

The large, private yard backs onto pines and stunning sunsets, fenced from our own acreage which connects to the cottage property. A doe has twins every year - watch them cavort. A fabulous red fox is often spotted sleeping on the road into the acreage, or cutting thru the back yard. And, watch for the eagles!

About Owner: Nancy and Terry Lunn

Terry and I have been renting our vacation homes on the Leelanau for over 30 years. Because we travel extensively we understand what our guests expect. Our Housekeeper is TOPS! We make every effort to provide attractive, eclectic and comfortable furnishings and linens. Many antiques and original paintings.

This new cottage is our own favorite travel location!

Why Owner: Nancy and Terry Lunn chose Northport

Although we have had rentals in other villages, we have focused on Northport for 20 years for the following reasons: It is just a short drive to several beaches, now a NEW Golf Course just around the corner, Grand Traverse Lighthouse and Leelanau State Park and Dunes; equal distance to Leland, Suttons Bay, Omena; close to the Casino and many great wineries. Because it is at the northern tip of the peninsula it has less tourist traffic noise. The village is a quaint reminder of how small villages were like a century ago, yet includes a modern health and fitness center and great shops, restaurants, beaches and marina.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has soaring ceilings and charming spaces. The porch in summer is wonderful: sunning, reading books and sipping Leelanau wine. And, on cool nights the lovely fireplace! On the north-west side of the village, the house is quiet and private.

Loved Huron Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Heron Cottage is the perfect place for a quiet get away and a great location for exploring Leenlanau Peninsula. Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Leland and Suttons Bay are approx. 20 mins.away. Gleen Arbor about an hour. There is a nice marina and beach area just a couple of blocks away from the cottage. My favorite winery was Black Star Farms, but my favorite place to enjoy a glass of wine was right on the porch of Huron Cottage. The neighborhood is very quiet. The owners have made the cottage very comfortable, relaxing and clean and they are very pleasant to work with. Can not wait to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great information. We would love to have you return! Part of renting our cottage is getting to know our guests; we think of all of you as part of our "cottage extended family"! The porch is also our favorite place for enjoying the Leelanau's wine. On days I prefer to be next to the fire, enjoying wine and reading a book while curled up in the cozy yellow lounge chair is also a favorite. Come back soon!

Perfect home base for exploring Leelanau Peninsula!

  • 5 of 5

We are originally from Michigan and love Northport so we were excited to find this property and kick off our summer Pure Michigan style! An easy (5min) walk to shops, restaurants and the marina/beach in Northport, Heron Cottage is a perfect home base for exploring Leelanau Peninsula.

The layout of the cottage was great for our party of two adults, two teens and two (big) dogs. The kids had the run of the first floor while Dad and I could retire upstairs. The full kitchen was well stocked with nearly everything you might need. The spacious yard and proximity to the water was a hit with the dogs.

There was something for everyone while staying at Heron Cottage. Dad and I enjoyed doing wine tours, listening to live music in the park, and getting up early for coffee and Barb's cinnamon twists. The kids enjoyed the freedom of walking around town, shopping, Knot Just a Bar, Tucker's and of course, were very happy that there was wifi at Heron. Visiting Sleep Bear Dunes, lighthouses and parks made great day trips. If you don't mind getting a little off the beaten path, try to make it to Fischer's Happy Hour--especially on Saturday for the bean soup. Have dessert there for sure.

A few notes: Unlike many of the other VRBO's I looked at, Heron Cottage provides linens, towels and bedding at no additional charge (and it may well be nicer than anything you have at home!). All you need to bring are beach towels. If you have small kids, there are no bathtubs, just showers. Fine for us, but perhaps worth noting.

If you do have dogs, note that this is not a fenced yard so you'll want to keep your dogs on leash if they do not have good recall. Northport is very dog friendly though. You can have your pups with you while dining outside at many of the restaurants. If you have a member of your party in a wheel chair or who is using a walker, this probably wouldn't be a good fit with the stairs, compact layout and throw rugs.

Owner was very easy to work with, property was represented accurately, and we'd definitely recommend Heron Cottage to our friends and family (but not before reserving our next visit!) I can't say enough good things about our stay. Met other people in Northport who had friends/family that had stayed at Heron as well and they said similar. Great spot, great value.

Relaxing and Serene week and Heron House

  • 5 of 5

Heron House was perfect for my recent trip to Northport. I have traveled to Leelanau many times over the years but usually stay in Glen Arbor or Leland. My traveling companion (adult son) wanted something quieter and less crowded. He actually selected Heron House. We were very pleased with the choice. The house is located on the NW side of town in a quiet neighborhood about 3 blocks from Grand Traverse Bay. Clean and comfortable and designed so that we each had our own private space. The house had everything we needed to prepare a meal and is equiped with AC and gas fireplace. The WIFI worked perfectly. The owner was very easy to work with and explained everything clearly and provided a contract which was reassuring for me.

We went for walks in area, which is beautiful with fields of wild flowers, orchards, a mill pond & stream and a small marina at Haserot Park (which has several small swimming beaches). We enjoyed dinner at the Soggy Dollar in town and of course visiting Barb's Bakery which is fabulous - about 4 blocks away. Tom's market has everything you need for preparing meals and is open until 10PM. Convenient.

We visited several beaches in the area - Christmas Cove, Peterson Park ( rocky, best place to find Petoskey stones), Good Harbor and Glen Haven. We did some hiking at the Houdek Dunes - which is about a 10 minute drive south on M22. We saw lots of birds there including pileated woodpeckers, hawks, chickadees.

We visited several wineries near Traverse City which is about 25 minutes south. Shady Lane Cellars - the tasting room is housed in a historic stone building, 2 Ladds winery on Old Mission has a gorgeous view of E G Traverse Bay. We visited the lighthouse on Old Mission and walked out on the point between the 2 bays and hiked some trails near the lighthouse.

We tried some new restaurants that were very good. The Good Harbor Grill in Glen Arbor which is next to the Pine Cone (ice cream). The Filling Station in Traverse City offers great beer but a limited menu with only personal sized pizzas (very good). North Peak Brewery was busy but efficient and always good. Knot Just a Bar in Omena was suprisingly good and is located overlooking Omena Bay - very pretty and next to Leelanau Cellars tasting room.

To sum it up, we had a great week and would definitely return to Northport and Heron House.

We love "Heron Cottage"

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at Heron Cottage! It is clean, well equipped. It's in a great location. Just a few blocks walk to town, or the city beach. It's a perfect size for 4 people. The bathrooms, are sooooo nice! If and when we get to Northport, we will stay at Heron Cottage for sure!

Great place to get away

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Heron Cottage! We brought our young family of 4 over Spring Break just this week. Although much of the area was still closed, as it was low season, there was still plenty to keep our family busy. We hiked in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, which was our family favorite. It was so fun to emerge from the woods and stumble onto the dunes with a fantastic view of Lake Michigan. And our kids climbed the dunes for hours!

Also a favorite was Black Star Farms. The cottage provided glasses, so we were able to have a complimentary tasting. The farm was so much fun for our kids, and we loved the wine and cheese tasting. Really neat place.

Overall, we were SO pleased with our stay. The house was well-furnished, the master suite was spacious and comfy, the towels were fresh and fluffy, laundry supplies were available ... we really enjoyed the fireplace. My only complaint would have been that we were a little surprised by the location. It mentioned that is was on 6 acres, but when we arrived, we were in a neighborhood. I don't know WHERE the acreage would have been. But we are social people, so we didn't mind that we weren't isolated. Northport is a really cute, friendly little village. And the walk to the beach was brief and enjoyable.

Well-maintained, fantastic little place at a really great price, and close to lots of activities. Perfect. :) Thank-you for making the process and the stay so effortless.

Owner's Response: We're thrilled our guests enjoyed Heron Cottage and appreciate their time to give us a review. I apologize for any misunderstandings about our acreage. Because of the misunderstanding, we have better explained the house location. However our copy used to read, "House overlooks our, private 6 acres for beautiful sunsets and wildlife viewing, peaceful, secluded." The house sits on its own lot, to the front of and adjacent to the open six acres, which are to the west of the house and has its own landscaped drive; with an additional open 60 acres to the west of these that used to be a cherry orchard. A wood fence does separate the two areas. The sunsets are fabulous: weather permitting. The 6 acres used to be the site of an old original farm house which unfortunately no longer remains; only the crab apple trees, blackberries and lilacs are still there. The living room and the breezeway, face this land to the west. Our heartfelt thank you to our Heron Cottage Extended Family!

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

The Heron Cottage is definitely as beautiful and as fine a place to stay as the pictures demonstrate! We had a wonderful week there while touring the beautiful sites (and wineries!) of the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas.

The house was spotless when we arrived, and it's evident it has been excellently maintained! It is beautifully decorated--silk flower arrangements everywhere!--and yet very comfortable as well. The master bedroom suite was great, and the walk-in shower was huge! Until we arrived, we were skeptical because the price was so reasonable but, as soon as we opened the door, we knew we had located an excellent vacation home!

They added wi-fi just before our arrival which was a bonus.

It's an easy bike ride into town for breakfast at the Treasure Chest--it's evident that's where the town folk gather and the owner was a delight. It's also an easy drive to all of the towns and villages of the Leelanau Peninsula as well as to Traverse City.

Nancy, the owner, was great to work with as we planned our trip, as she answered all of our questions promptly and helpfully. And when we encountered a brief problem with the wi-fi connection our first evening, Nancy and Terry were on top of it immediately and, within the hour, they had contacted Charter and it was resolved.

Can't speak highly enough about the Heron Cottage--it's so lovely and so comfortable--and Nancy and Terry are wonderful hosts!
