We're in our 60's, and we've loved coming to Mendocino with our extended family. We're too busy or stupid to spend alot of time at Pepperwood, but it shouldn't sit empty. It should house happy families enjoying themselves.
Michelle purchased this house in 2004
We had been staying in vacation rentals for years in the Mendocino area with our wonderful aunt. We were always on the look-out for something that would offer the best combination - solid, big house, great yard, great view, as close to the water as possible, yet no possibility of falling off the bluff, and lots of privacy. When we found Pepperwood, we loved the location -- that we could walk back on the private lane to Russian Gulch State Park; that the bottom of the yard offered very close-in views of two different coves, the large yard is green grass, with mature landscaping.
The yard is huge and we try to keep it beautifully tended. The house itself is not the usual beach shack -- it's sturdy and offers very generous spaces. If you're caught inside by the weather, you're even happier, with a roaring fire, huge TV over the fireplace, lots of reading material, lots of beautiful, soft couches and chairs. It seems like the best of all worlds.
We stroll to the bottom of the big, private yard and sit on the bench to watch the waves smacking into the coves below. While we're not directly on the water, there's a large view at the bottom of the yard of white water crashing. It's particularly wonderful around storm season.
As well, the yard is very large and well maintained. We play croquet in the horse-shoe of lawn around the outside of the house. It's great exercise to whack away at the croquet balls.
We stroll the block-and-a-half on a private lane back to Russian Gulch State Park--frequently encountering quail, turkeys, and deer. Some of the best views on the planet on the bluffs of that park, along with picnic tables and trails. This is a huge plus to this house. There's a wonderful beach in this park that is usually empty.
This house is pretty much solid old redwood -- it's as solid as a rock, and it's not a 'beach house'. It's a warm, large, comfortable home, huge fireplace, yet really great views. It has really big rooms to hold extended families without feeling like you're unable to get away for a bit of down time. There is a computer area in its own room, with a picture window and counter for additional get-away space; and the kitchen has an eat-in counter looking out at the Mendocino Headlands.
You can cook dinner while watching TV (for those of us easily bored) or listening to our own CDs. You can shut the heavy swinging door between the kitchen and the extra-large frontroom for some extra privacy. Lots of nice touches.
Thank you for having the house prepared so neat and organized. It made our visit relaxing and enjoyable.
It really shows how much you care about maintaining the house and people who stay there!
Thank you again.
The entire experience, from dealing with the owners through to getting to and staying at this special place, was wonderful. My family and I were celebrating my 50th birthday, and we all loved every aspect of the home - the location, the well-equipped, spotlessly clean kitchen and bathrooms, the furnishings, and the garden and situation. We are looking forward to the next time we can go up North. As a final touch, we broke a water jug, and after we'd let the owners know, they told us that this was "normal wear and tear "and that they wouldn't deduct anything from our security deposit. Class shows! I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the classic Mendocino experience!
My husband and I have celebrated our birthdays and wedding anniversaries at Pepperwood during a wonderful week in April for the last six years. We have stayed at other vacation rentals in the Mendocino area, but once we stayed at Pepperwood, we had no desire to stay anywhere else. We were originally lured by the photos of the beautiful ocean views and tasteful accommodations. Once we arrived, we realized the location and amenities exceeded our expectations. Each year we have been accompanied by our dog, Shylo, and various family members and friends. Everyone always has a great time and really loves hanging out at the bottom of the yard, on the deck, or on the big comfy couches in the living room. Shylo especially loves roaming around the huge, fenced yard. Russian Gulch State Park, also dog friendly, is just a short walk down the road. There you can walk out onto the headlands, down to the beach under the bridge, or have a picnic in the trees - all with gorgeous ocean views of the dramatic Mendocino coastline. Besides visiting Mendocino Village itself, we also recommend MacKerricher State Park and Pacific Star Winery, both north of Fort Bragg. My husband loves to cook for our guests and he's been very happy to do so in the well equipped kitchen. Michelle and Brian have always been very helpful and accommodating every time we stay at their beautiful home. We can't thank them enough for providing such a special place and vacation experience for our family and friends!
Our family of four had a lovely time staying at the Pepperwood home. The home itself was spacious and clean and had just about everything you might need for a relaxing vacation. We used the grill, watched movies, played croquet, watched the waves crashing, enjoyed a fire, and walked down to Russian Gulch State Park for a picnic lunch. The well-stocked kitchen included spices, basics (sugar, flour, etc), bakeware, and the cabinets were all labeled, which made things easy to find. You know from the first email that Michelle and Brian send that you are dealing with organized and thoughtful owners who have anticipated all of your questions and needs. We would love to return again soon.
Pepperwood is now our very favorite house to rent, and we have been renting houses for 15 years up here. Everything you could want and need. Very comfortable, amazing fireplace, great bedrooms, Luscious grounds. It's not the closest house to the ocean, but there are still some great views. The owners are wonderful to deal with, and we couldn't enjoy we're look forward to the place anymore than we already do.
We have rented properties from Hawaii to Europe and all points in between. Pepperwood is simply the best. It is classic Northern California Redwood Empire strong in its styling and location. The view is amazingly close to the water yet with a level fenced in yard that young children can run and play without worry. The house is California coastal retro, yet is tastefully updated throughout. The kitchen is well equipped and the entire house is white glove clean. When we arrived a fire was already laid and ready for a match in the fireplace. The uniqueness and feel for this home is found in the fact that every angle of the yard and spaces in the home have an incredible view of the surroundings. The flock of Turkeys brought an added thrill to our two young grandchildren. The games and child friendly nature of the house such as a high chair and pack and play were so thoughtful. The location of this house relative to Ft Bragg and the Skunk Train, or Mendocino and its shops is perfect. The beaches are minutes away. Brian and Michelle were very gracious and professional in handling contracts and payments including shipping back a forgotten kid item. We will definitely be back because Pepperwood is simply the best.
My sister and her family, as well as my husband and I truly enjoyed our stay at the Pepperwood home; Michelle and Brian ensure you will not forget your stay at Pepperwood and the amenities were plentiful! The home is beautiful with so many plants, flowers, and of course, the ocean to engage your sense of tranquility and total relaxation; loved watching the humming birds! Also, we really enjoyed cooking out and enjoying all the scenic terrain to explore, as well as the wildlife which was incredible; everyday was a new adventure. Highly recommend checking out the local state parks because each one of them offered new adventures and an array of wildlife for those photography enthusiasts and professionals! What a way to try out my new camera; so much to see and oh so much to do. The Pepperwood home is in the heart of it all! So close to the Mendocino Bay shops; really enjoyed the Fourth of July Parade! We highly recommend a stay; one of the best I've visited!! Thanks so much to Michelle and Brian!
