LE POMMIER - LE PETIT-MANOIR

Sarlat la Caneda Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Best location, Sarlat 5 min, Pool, WiFi, 4 star rated - see Guestbook Comments

Within the golden triangle of Montfort, Beynac and Sarlat, five kilometers south of Sarlat and near the 12th century village of Vitrac, we have an ideally located property of exceptional beauty. The property consists of a group of vast and imposing original stone buildings surrounded by three hectares (7 acres) of park and private forest. A prized south of Sarlat location, just a few hundred meters from the Dordogne river, yet within five minutes by car (even in July and August) from the medieval charm of Sarlat, the capital of Perigord Noir, its excellent restaurants, shops, markets and festivals. Both quiet and peaceful, but close to everything and not isolated. Our three charming gîtes, Le Pommier, Le Rosier and Le Bois, are perfect for your self catering holiday rental while you explore the beautiful Dordogne valley. Very comfortable and full of character, each has a large private garden, barbecue and use of a chlorine free heated swimming pool. Official 4 star rating.

SARLAT: Sarlat is by far the most important tourist site in the region. Over a million visitors discover or re-discover this medieval jewel every year. It has one of the largest medieval urban areas in the world and the greatest number of historical monuments per square kilometer in Europe. Starting in 1964 the town has been restored and renovated revealing a veritable treasure trove of Medieval and Renaissance art to the public. The 1978 film version of “Les Miserables” was filmed extensively in Sarlat, but also in nearby Domme, with the stunning Beynac Castle standing in for the famous Toulon Jail. Sarlat’s wonderful architecture and medieval style buildings and stone roofs have made a backdrop for a score of other top motion pictures since, which has added to it’s fame and it’s fortune.

BEYNAC: The cliff-clinging Chateau de Beynac soars 150 meters straight up above the Dordogne river. Apart from the impressive location, Chateau de Beynac is also a fascinating castle to visit and explore. You can see many of the ancient rooms, dungeons, kitchens and living quarters. In 1189 Richard the Lionheart, the king of England, seized the castle by scaling the cliffs below and entering through the toilet holes that are suspended out over the cliff. They are still there today and can be visited. Beynac has served as a location for several films, including Jeanne d'Arc by Luc Besson, in 1999.

OTHER THINGS TO SEE : Our own personal website contains a comprehensive guide of all the must-see attractions in the Black Perigord including a map, beautiful photos and a brief description in five languages. You will also find a map of nearby stores and recommended bakeries (with opening hours and days closed), pharmacies, post office, bike rentals, a farm selling directly fresh foie gras products, etc. and a lot of other useful information.

Idyllic property, excellent location and hosts

  • 5 of 5
This was our second family holiday at Le Petit Manoir, the first time in 2011. Since then Peter and Karen have been busy improving what was already a lovely place to be, with an immaculate pool area (now with a cover that the kids enjoyed swimming under) and a fountain in the grounds.
The website describes the property accurately, as do the numerous TripAdvisor reviews - we thought the superb reviews were too good to be true, but they were entirely accurate (5 start).
We have previously stayed in Le Bois, which is tucked away if you prefer absolute seclusion (our children were 5 and 8 then, so we felt less guilty about the noise - but the thick stone walls mean there is no noise between gites anyway). This time we chose Le Pommier which has a great view of the grounds and the sunset.
The property is always very clean, with modern bathrooms and all of the 'gadgets' kids crave these days - wifi, a computer and two different sets of satellite channels (including Freesat, the same channels as we receive in the UK).
Karen and Peter are often pottering around should you need help, and their home is adjacent to the gites. They have always been more than welcoming and happy to help, including suggesting a lovely restaurant and even making a reservation for us!
The area has so much to offer - we've now spent two holidays there (both for 2 weeks) and we still haven't exhausted the list of sites and activities. We would typically go out until the afternoon and come back for a swim, before relaxing with a bottle of wine by the BBQ.
The sorts of things we have done as a family include: bike ride, canoeing, exploring caves, prehistoric sites, castles / chateaus and famous towns such as Sarlat, Rocamadour, Bergerac and even Cognac (a bit further away). The best place for the kids was a recreated medieval / olde worlde village called La Bournat at Le Bugue.
There is the best cake shop in the world (and we've tried a few) at Castelnaud, as voted by the whole family. Get there early (that means before midday in France!).
I have done and will continue to recommend both these gites and the area to my friends and family. Having been to various places as a family - including other places in France and Disney at Florida - the whole family decided holidays don't get much better than at this place with Karen and Peter (and Forte!).
So we have booked to return in 2015.

Fantastic Location, quality gite, perfect!

  • 5 of 5
We arrived and were immediately wowed by the sheer beauty of the gites and surrounding area, plus the very warm and genuine welcome we received from Karen. Le Pommier is extremely well kitted out, spacious and clean. The bedrooms are of a good size and served by a family sized bathroom with a powerful shower, which I must comment on because far too often I have been disappointed by dribbling showers. The lounge area is comfortable and well served by a TV, DVD and a computer with wifi, all of which helped entertain the children at certain times. The facility to dine in or alfresco dine or BBQ was important as it gave us flexibility based on the weather. The covered and 'heated' swimming pool is fantastic, allowing swimming regardless of the weather, which proved priceless as we were able to keep the children occupied and interested on the days when we just needed to stay on site and chillax. As for location, awesome, there really are no downsides to location as much of the Dordognes best attractions are within easy striking distance: Sarlat is a stones throw away as are it's supermarkets and shops! We would definitely recommend Le Petit Manoir. By the way, or children are 6 and 8.

Well positioned gite brimming with character

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay here, just out of Sarlat. Set in large gardens, each gite had their own private area. Property was immaculate, everything was there you could need. Apart from the proximity to all the local markets dotted in nearby villages, one of the best things about this property was Karen. Great personality, with lots of information about the area. When we come back to France, our accommodation will revolve around booking another stay here.
