Further details: Bansko town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has narrow cobbled streets with stone houses, 120 cultural monuments, museums and permanent ethnographic exhibitions. In the centre is The Holy Trinity church with its 30 m high bell tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. In summer hiking, climbing and horse riding are popular. Mountain bikes can be hired in order to explore this beautiful region. Local companies can organise trips in the mountains e.g. white water rafting, canoeing, paragliding. For après ski the traditional Bansko tavern ('Mehana'), with their exceptional charm and style offer local atmosphere with their cuisine and good selection of Bulgarian wines. As the cost of living is very cheap, your money will go much further here than in skiing resorts in other parts of Europe.
Chalet superb, clean and spacious, lots of room in hall for our ski gear. Short bus journey to gondola no problem, worth journey to stay at katarino. Prices in Bulgaria really good, will definately ski in Bansko next year and return to this property.
A group of five us decided last minute to go to Bulgaria skiing and boarding for a week at the beginning of March 2013.
The connection from Sofia was a couple of hours by private minibus, and we arrived at the resort in time for dinner. The chalet is simple and stylish, the rooms well appointed with a lovely spacious lounge with log fire (we didn't actually use it as it was warm enough). The kitchen has cooking facilities and a table to have dinner.
The hotel (you have access to all the spa facilities and swimming pool for free by dint of staying in the chalet) is lovely with views of Bansko and the slopes. The spa facilities themselves are lovely, clean and not too busy. They even have table-tennis, and bowling in the basement, both of which we used (and tennis which we didn't).
I would definitely recommend the chalet as it is excellent value for money and the spa is ideal after a long day of skiing or boarding. Bansko is big enough in terms of variety of slopes for a week (although there is very little off piste), and I think they are expanding.
John & Kim I should have reviewed your property years ago. Sorry.
I have stayed regularly at your chalet over the past three years both with and without my children. Being a resident in Bulgaria for over four years now, I can honestly say that Katerino is without a doubt the best managed resort I have stayed at anywhere in the country. The location is fantastic, facilities superb and of course the chalet itself is clean, well laid out and comfortable for a family of four.
I will definitely be returning soon.
I had a great holiday staying at your chalet. I was surprised at how large it was and there was plenty of space for our group, it was well equipped and spotlessly clean. We really enjoyed the log fire! The chalets private garden would be great for sunbathing.
The hotel and spa was excellent and all staff were very helpful.
Bansko is a great town to visit, with a mix of old and new. We just could not believe how cheap everything was. We got the free hotel bus to the slopes which was very convenient and it was a relief that the slopes were not too crowded for a good weekends skiing & snowboarding. We hired all our equipment from the hotel which was substantially cheaper than anywhere else. Some of our group had lessons which was good value.
Thanks for being so helpful John & Kim. I will be skiing & renting with you next year, and hope to try your chalet in the summer to explore the Pirin National Park.
All the best
Bansko is the newest and the most rapidly developing ski resorts in Bulgaria. 40 million Euros have been invested, to create a top rate facility with the best equipment, including a new gondola, snow guns, electronic ski pass system etc. There are 14 pistes totalling 65km, including a 16 km run plus cross country and excellent off piste skiing. Bansko is popular with snowboarders; facilities include a half pipe. There are several ski schools for all levels of ability. For snowboarders and the more advanced skiers there are challenging off piste.
Ski and snowboard equipment can be hired at Katarino Spa Hotel. Skis, boots and poles for an adult, for 6 days are about 50 EUR. Half price for children under 12 years. Bansko is 5 miles with further rental options.
Opposite the complex, approx 3km is one of Bulgaria's first Golf Courses 18 hole, par 72 designed by Ian Woosnam.
