Villa Isabelle, our Ile de Re accommodation, is situated in a quiet area of La Flotte en Re, reputedly one of the most beautiful villages in France, on the north side of the island.
The village of La Flotte has beautiful houses lining the pretty port, quaysides and harbour. Both here and in the village centre are many pedestrian streets. Stroll around the narrow streets of the centre!
La Flotte presents an interesting contrast, between the beautiful residences aligned along the quays and the labyrinth of the small houses in the interior lanes.
Do not miss the daily indoor markets of the old market hall. Then sit back outside a café and watch the world go by!
Do not miss either the medieval market and then visit the Maison du Platin dedicated to the various agricultural and maritime activities of the island.
Formerly a small village of fishermen, the village of la Flotte en Re was formed around the castle of Mauleons, close to the current church. Little by little, it grew around its developing port in the 18th century under Louis XV. The trade and the exchanges were very prosperous there as the beautiful houses on the avenue Felix Faure will testify.
The church Sainte Catherine's bell-tower reminds us that before the trains, the trading ships made stopovers here: Norwegians, Dutchmen, Spaniards and even Americans came to buy the famous Ile de Re salt, brandy, vinegar... The characteristic pier goes back to 1840; it extends its superb circular arm of over 200 metres long, with a 9 metre high lighthouse at its end, visible from 15 kms away.
