|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
Perfect privacy and the sweeping drama of magnificent ocean views from every room of this new villa harmonize with The Retreat's natural setting. Perched hillside just 110 feet above the live coral reefs, white sands, and soothing surf sounds of pristine Dreekets Bay on Saint John's unspoiled east end, The Retreat is sequestered behind an electronic gate.
The landscaped entry courtyard, set with a pergola, lap pool, hot tub, and a terrace for sunning and relaxation, welcomes its privileged guests into an aura of tranquil serenity and beauty swept by cooling tradewinds. Its three pavilions, washed with cool green hues, are all on one level and sited to overlook one of the most stunning ocean views in the Caribbean - a sparkling, long-distance panorama of Sir Francis Drake Channel with the verdant island of Tortola beyond. Two equal, air-conditioned, king-size bedroom/bath suites flank either side of the main pavilion, and both offer a loft with extra-long, double-size beds (accessed by wooden pull-down ladders). The baths feature romantic outdoor showers, from which the spectacular views can be enjoyed in complete privacy.
This lovely hideaway is finished with rich slate tiles, hand-crafted mahogany cabinetry, and teak and mahogany furniture and accent pieces from Indonesia, Burma, and Thailand. The well-equipped gourmet kitchen in the main pavilion offers ocean vistas. Each pavilion features a unique and convenient choice of roll-down electronic screening or glass-paneled doors which cover the entire front of each pavilion - they roll down at the touch of a button - or leave them in their up positions and enjoy the view from the balconies outside and the drama and complete openness of The Retreat.
There are seasonal papaya, passion fruit, banana, lemon, and lime trees in the garden for you to pick and enjoy.
Outside one-bedroom pavilion is a slate-lined outdoor beach shower and a wooden staircase which leads to a trail zigzagging down to Haulover Bay. Frommer's Guide deems Haulover Bay one of the best snorkeling destinations on Saint John (locals say it is THE best), and on a lucky day you might spot dolphins frolicking, or a sea turtle. A few feet down this shoreline from the trail, a lovely crescent of white sand beach curves around crystal-clear waters - stunning beauty and solitude await you.
The Retreat offers the ideal combination of elegant luxury and relaxing seclusion, and will refresh your spirit with its aura of natural harmony and peace... a very special place.

Everything about The Retreat was great, if I were to design a beach house this would be my floor plan! It had great common and private areas.
The manager, Dena was warm, funny, helpful, and accommodating in every way!
Are there Mosquitos on ST. John? Yes lots of them, it's a tropical island. But our villa was one of the few havens from them. The screens allowed for constant tranquil breezes. A/C was never even a thought.
The views are the most amazing I have ever seen (I am a world traveler and lived in Hawaii for years) There a spectacular views around every turn in St. John but the one from every room of this villa are WOW, the reviewer above must be blind because the view of the BVIs is totally outstanding.
The driveway is challenging, as are 99% of St. John driveways, but you get the hang of it.
The villa is white now not green like the photos.
This villa allowed for maximum privacy, you haven't lived until you've taken a shower looking out at the Caribbean Sea.
The beds are incredibly comfortable. I'd go back just for that!
We fully plan to return again and again.
My family and I stayed at the Retreat for 12 nights over Thanksgiving. There was a mosquito problem in the home which we could not resolve. This made it a very unenjoyable experience. We were instructed to spray the whole house with Raid twice a day to resolve. Unfortunately, we were not satisfied with the Owner's asistance in resolving the issue.
The location on the East End is great. The close view of the bay is nice but the long view of the BVI's is not so appealing. The Villa construction is not what I would expect of a high-end, luxury Villa.
I feel compelled to write a review for The Retreat and for St John. This was our first trip to both, and I am incredibly particular and detail-oriented! I researched high and low, and really wanted THE best of all worlds. I could not have asked for more! The water views at The Retreat are breathtaking, the open air design of the whole villa is romantic, breezy, cool, and totally makes you feel in nature. The access to the bay below for snorkeling is a welcome challenge, a mini hike of sorts, with a little adventure. The snorkeling in the bay right below is AWESOME! Best we saw on the island! It got such that we didn't want to leave the villa, because mornings were spent marine-life viewing while sipping coffee, followed by fantastic snorkeling, lunch, rum drinks, a nap, and more afternoon snorkeling! A passing shower brought spectacular rainbows over Tortola. It was quiet (even with the mild construction going on next door), peaceful, one of the most relaxing vacations yet. I've stayed in many VRBO properties, and this was better equipped than most for cooking (should you choose to do so). I was concerned we'd be "out there" and have no restaurant options...but Shipwreck was only a 10 minute or so drive (once you get used to the roads!), and was excellent. Miss Lucy's was maybe 20 mins drive, and was SUPERB! Real quality cuisine. We never missed Cruz Bay at all....If you like privacy, nature, quiet, and you want water views, great snorkeling, and one of the most unique villas out there, The Retreat is for you. The property Manager is so helpful and truly wants you to have the best vacation possible. We would go back without hesitation. Truly wonderful....if you're on the fence, jump off and go to The Retreat. You will not regret it....Oh, I hate heat, and typically sleep with A/C on anytime it's over 65 out...I never once turned on the A/C. The tradewinds blowing through the open air design and the huge ceiling fans in the villa are more than adequate to keep you cool and comfortable. If not, a jump in the pool seals the deal! Wish we were still there.....it makes me smile just thinking about it!
Can not be a better place to stay in the USVI. This place is the Garden of Eden with breathtaking views of the sea and Tortola. the mgr. of the property was most helpful in getting our wk. started in Paradise. If you want to get away fromit all and feel as if you have your own private island and beach, this is the place for you.
