This historic location was the site of the sugar plantation manager's home of times gone by. The grounds are surrounded with old growth trees, plumeria, mangos, tangerines, bananas, avocados, papayas, often ready for your picking. This comfortable retreat has a large master bedroom with a new king bed, master bath with jacuzzi tub and a large walk-in shower all done in green/gray slate. One guest bedroom has a double bed. The 2nd bedroom has a comfortable day bed with trundle that can be made into a king bed. The gourmet kitchen features all high end appliance, complete set-up for your cooking needs.
Other features include high ceilings, wood floors throughout, ceiling fans in each room. The property is fully landscaped with lawns, trees and flowers and even a swing in the mango tree. There is a wonderful bench which I call a meditation area in the lower garden. The large wrap around lanai/deck is roof covered and has a gate at the stairs making it safe for small children.
WHY WE LIKE NORTH KOHALA
We thought it would be nice to share a more personal outlook of our attachment to this part of the Big Island instead of just listing off different activities.
Let’s begin with waking up to a wonderful sunrise accompanied by the birdsong of Cardinals, Mynas, Dove, Finches etc. they are so happy on our property. It feels as though our home is a tree house.
We love taking a morning walk before breakfast either out to Pololu Point (4 mile round trip) or just down to Keokea Beach Park (about 1 ½ miles round trip). If we think about it we will grab a few carrots to feed the horses on the way to the beach park. Quite often we will hop on our bikes and ride out to Pololu Point, not an easy ride but it does get the heart pumping. After the morning exercise we might pick some papaya or bananas from our garden and settle down to a relaxing breakfast on our spacious lanai. What a lovely and peaceful way to begin the day.
For a longer hike you might drive out to Pololu point, and hike 1 ½ mile down to the blacksand beach. For the more adventurous keep on the trail for about 2 more miles to the lookout over Honokane Iki Valley.
If you are in the mood to go to the beach we love getting up early, leaving the house at 8:00 a.m. and heading to Mauna Kea which allows about 42 cars into their public beach parking. It fills up early and if you are there at least by 9:00 a.m. or earlier you will have a choice spot. It is about ¼ mile walk down to the beach from the parking lot. There are public restrooms, showers and best of all one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island. There is good snorkeling to the left and also to the far right of this beach. If you did not manage to get in on that particular day there are some marvelous options… Hapuna Beach, very good place to boogie board, Beach 69 which is located just past Hapuna Beach is another special spot with good snorkeling.
If you like to kayak there are rentals in Kawaihae. We spend many of our winter days out in our kayak becoming up close and personal with the humpback whales.
There is a lovely black sand public beach in the Mauna Lani complex which is worth checking out.
We love hanging out in North Kohala. There are some mild hikes at the Bond Estate. Paul and our daughter Cindy did the zip line tour, close to our home, this past winter which they enjoyed. There are now two zipline companies operating in this area. We just experienced the Kohala Ditch Adventure, kayaking through history...not to be missed!
The old sugar plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau are fun to explore. Be sure to visit the Coffee Mill in Hawi for your coffee fix or ice-cream. It is nice to just hang out and “talk story”. The Bamboo restaurant in Hawi for lunch or dinner is a must. Try to go there when our favorite entertainers are playing…John Keawe, or Roz & Mathew Kupukaa. For fresh sushi try Sushi Rock in Hawi. We often order sushi from Sushi to Go in Kapaau (next to Yoga Studio) and take it out to Kapaa Park to watch to sunset. There are some wonderful art studios in the area, don’t miss the Dunn Gallery in Kapaau. While in “town” drive down to Kamehameha Park, a big surprise as there is an olympic size pool, tennis courts, a 9 hole golf course, skate board park and play area for kids.
Do not miss: The most scenic ½ hour drive on the mountain road to Waimea and explore this “cowboy” town. Go early on a Saturday and visit the farmers market. Keep on driving out of town to Honokaa and out to Waipio Valley lookout for a stunning view. We like spending the night in Volcanoe at the Kiluea Lodge. This is a 6 hour round trip drive from our home. Hiking the Kiluea Iki crater trail is a wonderful experience (4 mile round trip). On the way back stop in Hilo Town where it is fun to explore the shops. For a special treat go to their farmer’s markets on Saturday or Wednesday. Please refer to the guide book which is in the house for other suggestions.
Night life: Things close down early in this part of Hawaii, if you want a fun experience go to Kawaihae, Blue Dragon for music and dancing. Check out their website for information.
For your grocery shopping we do most of ours in Hawi, Takata’s market. It is not fancy but it has everything you need including some great poke. There is a Foodland in Waimea and of course Costco if you are staying for a long period of time. Costco is located 2 miles toward Kona from the airport.
We think this is the best part of Hawaii. Expect lush green landscape, unobstructed ocean and mountain views, large tracts of land with nothing on them but horses, cattle and an occasional house. Relax in our garden, feel the history that seeps out of this land, experience the feeling of ALOHA,

Paul & I have lived in Squaw Valley, California for many years. We are active 'seniors'. Paul retired from the design/building business and I am a retired college physical education instructor. We have eleven grandchildren ages range from two to 21 years. We love being outdoors and have an active lifestyle. The culture of Hawaii is very important to us, one of the reasons we chose to buy a home in 'old Hawaii' where we can feel a part of the history that surrounds us.
We were married 24 years ago in a remote part of Maui and since then have been searching all the islands for a more permanent Hawaiian home. We decided to buy our present hale in North Kohala where our active lifesytle can still flourish. We bicycle,and hike right from our front door, and take our kayak to our special put-in spot. Gardening is a passion and what a delight it is to be able to actually watch things grow. We love being a part of a community and have found Kapa'au and Hawi filled with caring and involved people.
