Prior to heading up, I read the very polarized reviews, and was a little nervous. Upon arriving, we did encounter the steep driveway (that the owner explicitly warned us about), however I was able to make it up on the third try with my front wheel drive vehicle. Aside from a couple mouse traps we saw no evidence of mice.

The inside was even more than we anticipated and the 14 of us that were renting for the weekend were impressed by the clean and open layout. The furniture and appliances were great and the cabin was very close to both Nubs Nob and Boyne Highlands, and Petoskey was only a short drive away.

The steep driveway made a perfect sledding hill for the kids, and even the adults got in on the fun too.

Anyone looking for an affordable stay in Harbor Springs should definitely consider staying at Beaux Chalet.

We are seasoned VRBO users, and this is the first time we have had to contact the owner because of problems, which were never remedied during our stay. Let me start with the positives, which are many. We had 13 people staying the weekend and the home was impressive in its décor, comfortable furnishings, and completeness of equipment. We had plenty of space to spread out and the proximity to Nubs Nob and Boyne Highlands were exactly what we were looking for. It was easy to secure the reservation and the fee was appropriate for the holiday weekend. Now, where help is needed:
1. DO NOT rent this home in the winter if you do not have a 4wheel drive or an all wheel drive car. In summer this obviously does not apply. The home is at the end of a steep and snow covered street and the driveway is incredibly steep. One of the families in our party could not make it up the drive in their front wheel drive car and had to park on the street and carry their items up the steep and slippery driveway. There was so much snow we were not able to find the can of salt/sand mixture the owner told us about.
2. Upon arrival, the skylight in the loft was found to be leaking on one of the twin beds, which we promptly informed the owner of. We dried all the bedding and let the mattress air out. He stated he would call the builder, who didn't come to check on it. We had 2 bowls on the floor of the loft catching a steady drip of water all weekend, and it distracted the kids in the loft and made sleeping troublesome for them.
3. Mice. Yep, it's the country, we get that, we just didn't appreciate having to clean up a large amount of mouse droppings on the kitchen counters upon arrival and on subsequent mornings. We purchased traps and Dcon and made home made traps and caught 2 mice. The 3rd morning, there were no longer droppings on the counters so we hope we got them. We plan to have the owner reimburse us for the expense of the traps and Dcon.

So, all in all, we had a great time skiing and the location is perfect, just needs a bit of help on the finer points of owning a vacation property from a distance. Had the owner addressed our issues when we brought it to his attention through phone call and text message, we wouldn't hesitate to give the property a 4 star rating.

Owner's Response: I will address all of this renter's listed issues in order:1. This Michigan winter 2013/2014 has been one for the record books in terms of snow fall - great for the ski slopes but tough on roofs and wildlife. My Arrival/Departure instructions clearly advise renters to bring a vehicle that can navigate Up-North winter weather conditions - preferably all-wheel or 4 wheel drive. The renter obviously did not pass my advice on to their family members. Last summer, I spent over $6,000 asphalting my driveway and our street was also resurfaced. During the resurfacing process I had the company cut the slope as much as they could. There isn't much I can do about the slope - it’s about the same as it has been since I built the home 8 years ago. As further evidence of the volume and depth of the snow, my garbage can - full of sand/salt mixture was evidently buried under the snow fall. The can is located halfway up the driveway and I have a shovel available for use. I told the renter where the garbage can was located when they called.2. The skylight was the result of ice damns that form when excessive snow builds up on the roof, melts from heat escaping thru the roof then the water is forced back up under the shingles and tar paper then thru the roof. I have electric eve melting cable in the front. The skylight normally doesn't need attention but this year has been an exception. When the renter called me, I immediately called my builder and requested him to go to the house and clean the snow off of the skylight. If necessary, I can provide telephone records to support the above statement. My roof has a 12'x12' pitch - very steep.
3. Again, due to the severe winter, the mice entered the home to escape from the brutal cold (below zero many nights). They may have entered when the renters unloaded thru the front door or thru the dryer vent? My cleaning person had just cleaned prior to the renter’s arrival. She disinfected all of the counter surface as well as setting several traps in the owner's closets (safely out of reach for children). As the renter requested, I will reimburse her for the cost of the traps. Contrary to her assertion, I did respond as quickly as I could considering the time of her call.P.S. I have never had text messaging and I never will. I can also provide copies of my phone records.

Just returned from a wonderful long holiday weekend at the Beaux Chalet! The accomodations were excellent and the chalet was very well equipped and spacious for handling a large crowd. We had our adult children/ spouses and a couple of friends and one 5-month old baby. The kitchen had lots of cookware and the table handled a big group. The wooded views from every room were beautiful. I love Michigan winters! Skiing was very convenient and worked well for taking shifts to watch the baby. One of the nicest rentals we have experienced with VRBO. More beautiful than the pictures!
