THE HILLS OF DREAMS- SAN CASCIANO DEI BAGNI

San Casciano dei Bagni Villa Rental Photos and Description

Mountain views, unspoilt countryside, sleeps 12, family friendly, near spa

Close to the famous Spa Fonteverde, in San Casciano dei Bagni , Tuscany, a villa for aesthetes who love the peace of the countryside, unspoilt distant views (including Monte Amiata), and total comfort. The 15m pool is just out of sight from the house but shares its magnidicent views. Situated on a hilltop where Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio meet, decorated by the owners with their own collection of works of art, very recently refurbished using only traditional materials, high ceilings, double glazing and ‘Persiana’ shutters make it chillingly cool in summer; fires and big radiators keep you warm in winter, it is within a day’s outing of at least fifteen famous cities and towns.

If you like spas then one of the best in Europe is only six kilometres away. The resort was built by the Grand Duke Ferdinand I de Medici in the seventeenth century around thermal springs famous for their healing properties. It now comprises seven pools, hot and cold, inside and outdoor.

Things to do: Apart from visting the nearby world famous Fonteverde spa?

Southern Tuscany is looser, less well groomed you may say, than the North of the county – it appeals to country lovers who prefer the company of vertiginous views and gem-like smaller towns to the manicured vineyards and jostling cities of the North. It also appeals to the touring aesthete, who wants a base from which to visit the extraordinary assembly of local towns. Our part of Italy, the Val di Chiana, has comparatively few tourists, Italian is still spoken in the restaurants and bars, menus are not bilingual, and prices are modest. Yet we are within a day’s trip of a plethora of beautiful places to visit. Our shortlist includes:

Abbadia S. Salvatore,

Acquapendente,

Arezzo

Assisi,

Castiglione del Lago,

Chiusi,

Citta della Pieve,

Florence,

Lago di Bolsena,

Lago di Trasimeno,

Montalcino,

Monte Amiato,

Montepulciano,

Orvieto,Perugia,Pienza,

Pitigliano,

Sarteano,

S. Quirico d’Orcia,

Siena.

Guests comments: ‘What an amazing week of enjoyment and contrasts: heat, sun, pelting rain, frescoes in Arezzo, blackberry picking, Etruscan baths, cows grazing in the dusk next to your very beautiful house. It has been a memorable holiday.’ 27 August 2007

‘Words are not enough to express our happiness whilst we have been here. We have explored so many charming villages, learn' t so much of Italian history, and enjoyed living amongst the beautiful scenery that captures you every time you look out of the windows of Felceto. We were lucky enough to see deer most days, and we were so pleased to see the spring flowers emerging in the wood before we left.’ 3 March 2008

‘The house and Tuscany pulled out all the stops for us. New amazing views at every turn, the weather - a forecaster’s nightmare – hot sun to snow, frost and gales to blow one over. The wildlife joined in and we’ve seen deer, hares, and even a wild boar’. 14 March 2008

Val D'Orcia: Villa Felceto lies in the renowned Val D’Orcia. To quote from Wikipedia ‘The Val d’Orcia, or Valdorcia, is a region of Tuscany, central Italy, which extends from the hills south of Siena to Monte Amiata. It is characterised by gentle, carefully-cultivated hills occasionally broken by gullies and by picturesque towns and villages such as Pienza (rebuilt as an “ideal town” in the 15th century under the patronage of Pope Pius II), Radicofani (home to the notorious brigand-hero Ghino di Tacco) and Montalcino (the Brunello di Montalcino is counted among the most prestigious of Italian wines). It is a landscape which has become familiar through its depiction in works of art from the Renaissance painting to the modern photograph.

In 2004 the Val d’Orcia was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

A haven of quiet and nature presented in impeccable taste and style whilst being a 'home from home'. One is cosetted whilst communing with the unspoilt countryside and its animals, supported by friendly and helpful locals and their villages and restaurants. Rarely have we had a holiday with no diappontments at all but this was one! Go, see and experience. Take a car.

Renting from overseas via a third country owner is intimidating (Americans renting an Italian house owned by an English family!), but we wanted a property that would be intimate, memorable, and profoundly special on the occasion of my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, so we "took the risk."

No risk at all, really. Felceto was everything the pictures promised and more. Spotlessly clean & immaculately maintained, the house is beautifully situated, and on such a gracious scale. It is big enough for a large family gathering with numerous children, yet retains an intimate feel.

The traditional detailing of the house was greatly appreciated, as was the modern plumbing and spacious main (and also modern) kitchen. The landscaping around the pool is still a little young, but that did not prevent us all from spending many hours down there in the water.

Being at Felceto is very much a country experience: serene, relaxed, and private. Our outings to local restaurants and shops was a good one, though traditional Italian hours are preserved.

We would recommend Felceto in the highest terms to the traveler in search of the quintessential Italian summer house experience. Expect spottings of diverse wildlife (the bird population was incredible) and magnificent sunsets over Mount Amiato.

We spent few days in October in this amazing Villa, people who run it are really nice and friendly, and the location is special, it was one of the best holiday in my life. Villa Felceto is surrounded by nature and its position on the top of an hill permits to sit for long time to watch the landscape of val D'Orcia and val Di Chiana. The rooms were spacious and very well decorated and all was very clean. In the evening we stayed by the fire place to enjoy local wines and in the day we spent time at the Fonteverde Spa in San Casciano dei Bagni, that is few minutes away from the villa and it's a place where we could have stayed to relax and enjoy massages for long time:-) Would love to go back soon!!!

Stayed for a week to photograph fashion spreads for the Sunday Telegraph magazine with 5 colleagues. The photographs that made me want to stay here (albeit very good photographs) do not do this magnificent villa justice. Not the slightest complaint. The warmest welcome, incredible view facing magnificent sunsets, the local town San Casiano del Bagni full of good wines, food and hospitality. And a star filled sky at night which is something I don't get in London. I couldn't recommend enough and certainly hope to return one day very soon. Grazie mille.

Good things

Villa Felceto has that rare gift of convincing each new guest that it is a treasure only they know about.

The villa's history, and with it that of the stunning view it admires, is celebrated and then complimented by the reassuring comforts of an English country house with both qualities meeting in a happy conspiracy by the fire. It is as comfortable with 12 as it is with 6 and never felt too full or empty when faced with the comings and goings of a big party.

It is the sort of kitchen that is fun to cook in but Orietta's cooking (and cleaning) is exceptional. Even pasta and sauce tasted good.

Annoyingly, however, there are a number of very good reasons for leaving the villa's confines: Montepulciano, Pianze and Orvieto to name but a few. And, almost any day can be perfected by a sunset drink at Bar Centrale in San Casciagno de Bagni. These represent a fraction of the owners suggestions in the reassuringly alphabetically-ordered manual.
