Crans Montana is a ski-resort perched on a south-facing slope. The ski area ranges from 1,476 metres (nearly 5,000 feet) to 3,000 metres (nearly 10,000 feet). Crowned by the Plaine-Morte glacier, the vertical drop is a respectable 1524 metres (5000 feet). The resort was the location for the 1987 World Alpine Skiing Championships and the World Alpine Ski Cup Finals of 1992 and 1998. Every year a number of FIS World Cup events are also staged here including men's and women's downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. The high proportion of gentle slopes make this a great choice for beginners, while the higher peaks are plenty enough to keep the more experienced skiers happy. Crans Montana is divided into 4 main areas with excellent connections and which offer a broad variety in types of skiing, from casual skiing at Cry d'Err to the adventurous slopes of Violettes, all under the remarkably sunny weather this station is famous for.
Golf: The Omega European Masters is one of the most prestigious golf competitions played on European soil. Located at Crans-Montana in the heart of the Swiss Alps, the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club is indisputably the most spectacular course on the European Tour schedule. This internationally-renowned golf competition, played on the same course for the 65th time this year, has seen players such as Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros, José Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia, Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, South Africa’s Ernie Els and Britain’s Lee Westwood, currently the world’s no. 2, win the coveted trophy.
