SECLUDED NATIONAL PARK TREASURE ON GROOTPAN & KIDDLE BAYS

Johns Folly House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

We are just outside Coral Bay on the southeastern side of the island. Our house sits just above a beautiful Salt Pond and Grootpan Bay. The view of the ocean is magnificent. Our two private beaches are just a short walk from the house. The snorkeling from one of the private beaches is described by locals as one of the best on the entire island.

The house is on a small, secluded road, surrounded by The National Park. The salt pond is home to a variety of birds as well as animal life like mongoose, crabs, and lizards. Hiking trails are nearby and Coral Bay is only a ten-minute drive.

PEACEFUL ST. JOHN RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
The St. John by the Bay cottage offers a great place to stay and explore St. John. There are great snorkeling sites all over the island, including the two private bays for the house and all are accessible from this cottage retreat, including Salt Pond Bay, Maho Bay and Waterlemon Bay just to name a few. The owner was great with following up and with suggestions on nearby sites and restaurants. Great extras were provided with the cottage, including a cooler, beach towels, a grill and extensive outdoor furniture. The view from the back porch is spectacular. Several good restaurants are close by, including Tourist Trap, Cafe Concordia, Miss Lucy's and Skinny Legs. We would definitely recommend this rental to our friends and relatives as a great place to stay in St. John.

INCREDIBLE VIEWS, LOTS OF NATURE

  • 5 of 5
This was our third year at the cottag and arguably was the best! If you are a bird watcher, this is the place for you. Two different varieties of hummingbirds, bananaquits, bullfinches and flycatchers are entertaining while sitting on the deck. If you're not a bird watcher, the views of the Salt Pond and Grootpan Bay from the deck are equally incredible, especially at sunrise and sunset. Being on the "quiet" side of the island, we found it very relaxing yet easily accessable to some of the best beaches, snorkelling and hiking trails St. John has to offer. We are already planning our fourth visit next year!

AMAZING 1ST TRIP TO ST. JOHN!

  • 4 of 5
This was our first trip to St. John, and the affordability of this house allowed me to consider the trip a possibility. The owner was very responsive to all of my questions via internet prior to actually making my decision. This was a family trip, and everyone weighed in on the accommodation choices. This place was the choice because of it's proximity to beaches reported to have great opportunities for snorkeling, and because of it's somewhat remote location on the East side of the island past Coral Bay. It's literally about 1/4 mile from the end of the paved road (route 10) that runs from Cruz to Coral Bays. The location is wonderful for finding remote quiet beaches with opportunities to swim with turtles, see squid, small sharks, rays and a whole host of other beautiful sea creatures among the coral reefs. Each of the bays has its charms. Grootpan and Kiddle, as well as Great Lameshur, are smooth rock beaches, while Salt Pond Bay and Little Lameshur are beautiful white sandy beaches. You can drive right to all these beaches with a 4- wheel drive vehicle ( or you can walk there) however, Salt Pond Beach requires about a 1/4 mile hike from the public parking area - and it is well worth the hike! The house is just as it is pictured - no frills, but very functional. The beds were very comfortable. The air conditioners were a welcome relief to the August heat and humidity. The kitchen was equipped with most of the basics - including blender and coffee maker. The grill worked really well for our self prepared meals. The caretaker who lives downstairs was very helpful and accommodating.
We really appreciated the use of the 4 beach chairs and the cooler, which we took with us on all our beach excursions. Linens were provided as well. We were there late in the season, so some of the Coral Bay restaurants were closed, but we really enjoyed Aqua Bistro. Lily's market provided a close spot for supplies. We made it to several of the North Shore beaches and into Cruz Bay for supplies, a few meals and some drinks. The North Shore beaches are lovely, but not as quiet and private as the Southeastern shore beaches. However, we especially enjoyed Leinster Bay and Waterlemon Cay, which are close to the Anneberg Sugar Mill ruins, about 20 minutes away by car. Another gem is Chateau Bordeaux ,in terms of dining - wonderful food and great views! We had no trouble at all with bad weather in mid August. Overall - a great experience! I would most definitely stay here again!

OUR PERFECT VACATION

  • 5 of 5
This was our first time at the cottage and we will be back. It was as described by the owner and other visitors. Clean, quiet, beautiful view, especially at sunrise and sunset. A mile or so from the National Park and beautiful, secluded Lameshur Beach, and many trails to choose from. Snorkeling at the two bays within walking distance from the house was good and very good at Lameshur. Deer and wild goats were around, and there was wonderful birding (brought our own humming bird feeder, that was the center of constant battles between two types of hummers, and the sugar birds.)

ST JOHN SNORKELING

  • 5 of 5
We've stayed at the Yellow House 3 times and plan to go back again & again. Our primary reason for going to St. John is to snorkel and from the house we can walk to two beaches in minutes and can drive to three more south-side beaches within 10 minutes. At all of these beaches the snorkeling is great and we are often the only people on two of the beaches with only scattered parties on two others most of the time. Of course, we can reach the northside beaches in 20-30 minutes when we want a change, though they're often more crowded.
In the evening we can enjoy the great view from our balcony and rest from our hours in the water while we watch the sunset in a very quiet and relaxed atmosphere. At night the stars are wonderful because we're away from the lights of Cruz and Coral Bays. There are plenty of places to walk safely as well as to hike and plenty of birds to watch.
The kitchen is well-equipped so that we can cook, yet we are within easy reach of good restaurants like Miss Lucy's and Shipwreck Landing or, a bit further, the several restaurants in Coral Bay. We can even drive into Cruz for the many restaurants there, for groceries and gas, though we much prefer the quieter East End.
The apartment is clean and comfortable, easily accessible to any one, no stairs, with many thoughtful touches: beach chairs, beach towels, coolers, fans in every room so one doesn't have to suffer the chill of A/C, and a very useful library especially about St John's flora and fauna, but plenty of recreational reading as well. There are plenty of electrical outlets for computers, etc.
Both the owner and the apartment manager onsite have been terrific, very responsive, full of suggestions about the island, where to shop, etc.
We have taken family with us on one occasion, and rave about our stays to any one who will listen.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION…..

  • 5 of 5
We were hoping this cottage would be quiet and secluded and it truly is. It is in a perfect spot. You see only one other house from the porch, where the view over the salt pond and ocean is just wonderful. The only noise is birds during the day and frogs and insects in the night. The house has everything you need and the kitchen is very well equipped. We prefer to cook and eat in rather than in restaurants and we cooked on the gas grill on the porch.- there are restaurants a short drive away if you want them. The décor is not fancy and the appliances not new, but everything is clean, orderly and in good working order. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms which really kept us comfortable- there are AC units but we didn’t need them. The two private beaches that are 10 minutes walk from the house are amazing. One bay in particular has really diverse coral and fish life, right off the beach. A treasure for kids, and novice snorkelers. There are some great books in the cottage that we used each night to identify the many many different fish, corals and creatures that we saw during the day.

The house manager lives downstairs but you won’t know she is there, unless you want to ask her something and then she is very helpful. The road to the cottage is very rough, so you really do need a 4W drive vehicle, which you need to get around the island anyway. We just loved being able to eat breakfast on the porch, stroll down to the beach and snorkel and swim for hours. One of the most relaxing vacations we ever had and we hope to rent this cottage again.
