KJARVALSTRÖÐ 14

Northwest Iceland Cottage Rental Photos and Description

PERFECT PLACE TO EXPLORE ICELAND

Kjarvalströð is a new luxury 'old style' privately owned cottages located in the spectacular and unique surroundings of Snaefellsnes on the west coast. Approx. two hour drive from Reykjavik. The National Park is only 5 min away. Enjoy the magnificent views of the glacier Snaefellsjökull, the surrounding mountains, and over the bay Faxaflói. The cottage is one of few cottages designed as Icelandic houses from 1920's. There are plenty of things to do and see in the area such as: beautiful hiking, whale watching, sailing around the many islands, historical places, bird watching, skiing and sightseeing on the glacier.

If you are looking for a quiet area to relax, or want to explore the unspoiled nature and many wonderful activities in the area, these Cottages are the perfect place!

Please visit our homepage http://hellnar.123.is/ for more pictures and info, and here you can find a great pictures from the area taken by our guests Ursula and Robert. https://picasaweb.google.com/102656392963375871162/ICELANDSNAEFELLSNES# They were so kind to allow us to put this link to the album.

About Hellnar ehf.

We are family that just love this place and its spectacular and unique nature.

Hellnar ehf. purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Hellnar ehf. chose Northwest Iceland

This cottage is located on the border of the National Park in Saefellsnes just under the famous Glacier Snaefellsjökull that is believed to be one of the seven energy fields of the earth that attracts thousands of people every year. The view from the cottage is straight up to the Glacier to the North and to the Sea from the South. It’s the best location to explore the Peninsula and be filled up by the energy from the Glacier.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very nice stay in this cottage that is located in a very quiet, inspiring and staggering area. We came late at night to this perfectly clean and beautiful house and where happy to find that the beds where nicely made ready with clean fresh sheets so we could crawl strait in. The house is equipped with everything you need, dishwasher, washing machine, drier, very comfortable beds and nicely furnished. There is a big patio around the house so we could always find shelter from the wind. The area Snafellsnes is amazing. We never got tired to just watch the mountains, the lava formations and colors, the spectacular cliffs along the shore and the Glazier. The communication´s with the owner was very friendly and helpful during our planning. We give this house and this area our best recommendations and will surely be back for more. Thank you!!!

ein prächtiges Häuschen in traumhafter Landschaft

  • 5 of 5

Jederzeit sehr gerne wieder!

Lovely part of Iceland - worth a visit!

  • 5 of 5
We (two couples) stayed here for a week and had a great time. The cottage is cosy for four adults - the second bedroom is tiny - but even so all of us slept really well and woke up to some glorious sunrises. It was spotless and extremely well insulated. Everything we needed to cook was provided, which was good because there is no restaurant close by - at least none that's open this time of the year. The cute little cafe in Hellnar was open, though! Jakob was great and very helpful - he provided us with lots of information before we set off and even suggested a car rental with which we were very happy. We drove around quite a bit (Reykjavik is almost 2.5 hours away) and managed to see some very beautiful places. Recommend going to Flatey Island by ferry from Stykkisholmur, particularly if going there in summer as you can see puffin and arctic tern colonies. We didn't see them as it was a bit too late in the year but we still enjoyed our few hours there especially since we got excellent afternoon tea at Olina's. The weather was unpredictable and cold (it was October after all - approx 2 deg C plus wind chill) so be prepared for rain, snow, hail and sunshine on any day - and sometimes all of them in an hour! We couldn't go see Snaefellsjokull which is just behind the cottage as it is inaccessible in winter. We did manage to spot the lights - even if only for a day - from right outside the cottage. The cave (Vatnhellir) is also close by - under 10 mins - and worth a quick dekko. This part of Iceland is absolutely fantastic and we'd love to visit again.

A house in great condition – fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5
We traveled on Iceland for about 2000 km with our rental car, and all in the family agreed that "our" house was in the most beautiful location of all. Jakob and Elsa provided us with everything we needed, great information, and all in the house was as promised. The house is well equipped and well maintained. Comfortable beds. Easy access to the ocean where we say killer wales from the beach. Good (paved) roads from Keflavik all the way to the cottage. We would gladly rent this house again.

Luxury cottage in an Icelandic National Park

  • 5 of 5
The cottage we stayed in was spotless and because it is someone's holiday home it was exceptionally well equipped - it had everything we could possibly have wanted as well as no less than eight windows in the open plan downstairs that looked out over the sea and Icelandic countryside as well as a dormant volcano. It was also very warm - so warm indeed that we had to turn down the heating and remember to turn it up when we left!

The walks around the cottage - lava fields, rocks in strange formation, that made you believe the characters in the old Icelandic tales are all still very much alive, seascapes of great beauty - were wonderful as was the bird life which was sometimes so noisy that we had to shout to be heard above them. The light was something the four of us remarked on again and again - not just the almost 24 hours of daylight but air so bright, so clean that we returned home feeling that everything around us was polluted.

Jacob was away when we were there but we met his son in Reykjavik and he gave us many useful tips (many of which we also found in the literature that we had forgotten - he was very tolerant!). But Jacob answered all my queries in the months before we stayed in his cottage with great attention and good nature. The drive to the cottage from the airport was very easy and was beautiful. It only took a long time as we kept stopping to take photos.

Iceland has the reputation of being expensive but we didn't think it was. Shopping at the Bonus supermarket certainly was no more expensive than shopping in London or Amsterdam (we went with Dutch friends). You don't pay to visit the geysers or waterfalls but eating out, we found is the one thing that was really expensive. So don't. Stay in the lovely cottage and cook simple meals for yourselves. It's what we enjoyed most of all.

I would recommend the cottage to anyone and probably at any time of the year. You feel as if you are at the end of the world and the peace you experience seems from another world. Iceland is an amazing country. Just go!

Lovely cottage in a superb setting

  • 5 of 5
The cottage is even better than in the photographs. It has everything you could need for a comfortable stay, whatever the weather. It is in a small group of ten or so similar cottages with wonderful views of the sea and the surrounding area and the volcano Snaefellsjökull. It is well equipped and everything is spotless and Jakob and Elsa, the owners, are always on hand to respond to emails or texts in the event of any problem. We came to Iceland hoping to see the Northern Lights and within a couple of hours of arriving at the cottage we looked out of the window and there they were, exactly like the photographs! We had a wonderful show that went on for several hours.

One thing to say is if you are visiting in anything other than summer it is best to hire a 4x4 vehicle as the weather can change in the course of a few hours. Also bring warm clothing and footwear as although the house is lovely and warm the wind chill factor can make it feel much colder outside than the thermometer says. As the other reviews have said, it is necessary to stock up on groceries and anything you might need in Borgarnes, an hour and a half's drive from Hellnar, which is the last major shopping area before the peninsula as the cottage is quite remote and you can't just pop out if you run out of milk. The nearest small supermarket is at Olavsvik, about 30 miles away. There are many things to do in the area, although Hellnar itself was out of season and the cafe and visitor centre just a short walk down the hill was closed, the owner helpfully provided a folder with lots of ideas of things to do, including whale watching. However if you want a relaxing stay this is also the perfect place.

Jakob and Elsa, the owners were very helpful to us when there was an unexpected snow storm in Hellnar and were unable to leave the cottage on the last day, Jakob emailed links to us so we could keep up with the latest weather forecasts and road situations, and even very kindly offered to provide us with food if we needed it.

We had a wonderful holiday with many sights that will stay in our memories forever and plan to come back to Iceland in the future as there is so much to see. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Absolutely beautiful

  • 5 of 5
The owner, Jakob, was very friendly and helpful. The property was a reasonably long drive from Reykjavik, however not difficult to find.

The property itself was spotless inside, well decorated, very modern and warm. Couldn't fault it!

The area is also very beautiful with plenty to do and see even in winter - however make sure you rent a car!

I would definitely stay here again if visiting the same area, and recommend the property to others!
