Lovely cottage in a superb setting
The cottage is even better than in the photographs. It has everything you could need for a comfortable stay, whatever the weather. It is in a small group of ten or so similar cottages with wonderful views of the sea and the surrounding area and the volcano Snaefellsjökull. It is well equipped and everything is spotless and Jakob and Elsa, the owners, are always on hand to respond to emails or texts in the event of any problem. We came to Iceland hoping to see the Northern Lights and within a couple of hours of arriving at the cottage we looked out of the window and there they were, exactly like the photographs! We had a wonderful show that went on for several hours.
One thing to say is if you are visiting in anything other than summer it is best to hire a 4x4 vehicle as the weather can change in the course of a few hours. Also bring warm clothing and footwear as although the house is lovely and warm the wind chill factor can make it feel much colder outside than the thermometer says. As the other reviews have said, it is necessary to stock up on groceries and anything you might need in Borgarnes, an hour and a half's drive from Hellnar, which is the last major shopping area before the peninsula as the cottage is quite remote and you can't just pop out if you run out of milk. The nearest small supermarket is at Olavsvik, about 30 miles away. There are many things to do in the area, although Hellnar itself was out of season and the cafe and visitor centre just a short walk down the hill was closed, the owner helpfully provided a folder with lots of ideas of things to do, including whale watching. However if you want a relaxing stay this is also the perfect place.
Jakob and Elsa, the owners were very helpful to us when there was an unexpected snow storm in Hellnar and were unable to leave the cottage on the last day, Jakob emailed links to us so we could keep up with the latest weather forecasts and road situations, and even very kindly offered to provide us with food if we needed it.
We had a wonderful holiday with many sights that will stay in our memories forever and plan to come back to Iceland in the future as there is so much to see. I would highly recommend this cottage.
Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. You had some adventure. This was the worst snowstorm we had this winter. Iceland can always surprice you :-). We are glad that you had a good time and would love to have you again any time.. Jakob & Elsa
