Excellent property

  • 5 of 5

Overall, after a 7 night stay I can echo all the other praise. The location is not only great for city exploration but also to get to/from Schiphol and Keukenhof by bus without going to the Central Station. We didn't ask much of Reina but she was very accommodating to our few requests. As to the negatives mentioned by Anne T., as a light sleeper I did have a problem with the church bells, but I mostly got used to them. I did not encounter any mold smell (& that's something I'm usually very sensitive to) or burnt-out lights, and the apartment was very clean. For American travelers, note that the lower kitchen-living room level of the apartment is up 2 flights of stairs from the street, with the apartment's upper bedroom-lavatory floor up another flight.

Location Location, Fantastic Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful experience at the Museum Apartment. Our host, Reina, was welcoming and helpful during our visit. The location was hands down the best of many previous trips to Amsterdam. Upscale neighborhood easy walking distance to both the Amsterdam Museumplein (the best of the best) and Vondelpark (Amsterdam's wonderful "Central Park"). Excellent selection of restaurants steps away from front door. Close to major tram stops. The apartment itself is located on a quiet square where there is an excellent Farmer's Market once a week. Try to plan your stay so you enjoy the Farmer's market. Nice to be out of the craziness of Leidseplein, but easy walking distance or tram ride to all the nightlife stuff, Graghtengordel, coffee shops, etc. We enjoyed daily walks at Vondelpark, Van Gogh Museum & the recently renovated Rijksmuseum. Also try Stedelijk museum of modern art too! Plan ahead and take in a show at the Concertgebouw. Apartment itself was quite comfortable, split level, high ceilings, fireplace, nice kitchen & bathrooms, and the classic Amsterdam steep stair well. Be ready to climb.

Maybe you should lower your expectations...

The Museum Apartment was perfectly located for our two-week stay, but it would not be a perfect choice for everyone, nor did we find previous reviewers' reviews currently accurate.

First the pluses: comfortable bed, working appliances, a toilet on each of the two floors, adequate personal and cleaning amenities, plenty of guide books and other info in the apartment for your use, easy-to-work-with owner, lovely residential neighborhood with nice shops and restaurants, fun Saturday farmers' market, good value for the money, good location for bus transport to and from Schiphol.

A few negatives: church bells that chime every half hour day and night (bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper), strong mold smell rising through the stairwell from the ground floor entryway, dim and burnt-out lights (especially in the kitchen and stairway).

The apartment was generally clean, although there were dead bugs in one kitchen drawer and the oilcloth tablecloth needed a scrubbing. Other reviewers have said the kitchen is well stocked. There was some tea and jam, but don't expect other breakfast items or the wine and cheese biscuits other reviewers have mentioned; there was none for us. Although we're 70 years old, the many steep steps began to feel normal after a few days; however, people with mobility, balance or low-vision issues would do well to avoid this apartment.

Overall, this was a fine place to stay, comfortable and spacious, in a city we would love to return to one day.

Wonderful apartment! Perfect location! Very comfortable!

GREAT APARTMENT!!! We HIGHLY recommend it. My husband and I stayed in the apartment with our 1-year old son for a week in July. The location was perfect for exploring Amsterdam. Very close to the museums and Vondelpark. The apartment was much bigger than expected and well-furnished. All the necessities were provided. The owners were gracious hosts, giving us great advice about Amsterdam and making us feel very much at home. The neighborhood is wonderful -- very safe and lots going on. The farmer's market on Saturday in the square outside the apartment was spectacular. The only downside of the apartment were the steep stairs. We were able to keep our 1-year old safe by keeping him inside a room with a closed door. He cannot open doorknobs yet, but if so, it would have been scary for the parents. Overall, we had a wonderful experience.

This is a great place!

We stayed here for three nights in early May 2013, and couldn't have been happier with the apartment. The decor is lovely, the apartment is clean, and we felt like it was our "home." Mark, the owner, was there to greet us and he was very friendly and helpful. His wife, Reina, left us a bottle of wine and cheese biscuits - a perfect welcome for our travel-weary family. Mark and Reina's assistant, Sanne, was extremely helpful and friendly as well.

The apartment is well-appointed with great towels, linens, and beds. The entire apartment is clean and comfortable. There are numerous DVDs, boardgames, and books to use in your downtime. But there won't be much of that because the location of this apartment couldn't be better! It's just a short walk to the Rijksmuseum and van Gogh museum and tons of great shops and restaurants. There's also a great market right in the square outside of the apartment on Saturday mornings.

One of the best restaurants we discovered was right in the square outside of the apartment, a delightful, delicious, kid-friendly pizzeria. There are a few great parks for kids within a block or two of the apartment, not to mention Vondelpark and the Museumplein, where our two young boys (ages 2 and 4) liked to run around and chase the pigeons. If you need to rent a car, there's a great company right down the street that we used called Amcar. The supermarket is just a short walk as well.

Traveling with two small children, this apartment had ample space for each of us to have our own personal space to unwind. The only thing to note is that this apartment is on two levels. The first floor is reached via the steepest staircase I've ever seen in my life - although this is very typical for Dutch homes. The first floor houses the kitchen, living room, and half-bath. The stairs to the second floor, where the bedroom and bathroom are located, are less steep but are curved. All this to say that if you're not able to climb steps with ease, or you have small children who have not yet mastered steps, this apartment sadly may not be for you.

We loved our stay in Amsterdam, and much of that had to do with this apartment. We hope to visit and stay in this apartment again!
