The Saint Germain neighborhood extends over the 6th arrondissement. It is on the Left Bank of the Seine. It is a neighborhood built around the St Germain des Prés abbey, of which the steeple remains today. Since the 17th century it has been the neighborhood of intellectuals, the Encyclopedists, Diderot, the Enlightenment philosophers, and then Marat and Danton lived here. Dating back to this period and unchanged still today is the café Procope, the oldest café in Paris; frequented at the time by Voltaire, Diderot, etc. Following the Second World War, France discovered jazz, and with it Bebop... In the vaulted basements of Saint Germain, people would come to dance and attend jazz concerts. Two mythical cafés should be remembered: the café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, many contemporary artists still hang out in them. Walking around the Luxembourg Gardens, drinking a coffee on the Place Saint Sulpice, and contemplating the Eglise Saint Sulpice… Wander in the little streets, Madame, rue Princesse, rue des Canettes…discover an historic and charming Paris. Haute couture shops, often very luxurious, are replacing the small boutiques and book stores. For lasting memories of Paris, also walk along the banks of the Seine, visit the Ecole des Beaux-Arts on the sly, and try a macaroon at Ladurée. Many arts and antiques galleries are to be found on rue de Seine, rue Bonaparte, and rue des Saint Pères. It is a neighborhood that is well-served by the metro and buses. It is centrally-located, lively, and ideal for a cultural and very touristy visit to Paris.
