The Saint Germain neighborhood extends over the 6th arrondissement. It is on the Left Bank of the Seine. It is a neighborhood built around the St Germain des Prés abbey, of which the steeple remains today. Since the 17th century it has been the neighborhood of intellectuals, the Encyclopedists, Diderot, the Enlightenment philosophers, and then Marat and Danton lived here. Dating back to this period and unchanged still today is the café Procope, the oldest café in Paris; frequented at the time by Voltaire, Diderot, etc. Following the Second World War, France discovered jazz, and with it Bebop... In the vaulted basements of Saint Germain, people would come to dance and attend jazz concerts. Two mythical cafés should be remembered: the café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, many contemporary artists still hang out in them.
