Cortes de la Frontera Cottage Rental Photos and Description

An enchanting restoration of an old village property with a modern twist.

This is an old, village property where the muleteer once lived with his wife and 10 children, mules, goats and a couple of pigs! After an extensive restoration the cottage now looks very different, and seamlessly combines traditional materials with contemporary interiors and clean lines. Downstairs we kept as many of the original features and materials as we could, the aged terracota floor tiles and the oak beams across the ceiling give the house a warm feeling of real character.

Upstairs was completely redone as we lifted the level of the roof and put in lots more windows and double doors out onto the sun terrace. As a result the master bedroom is huge and full of lots of natural light. The bathtub in the en suite bathroom was carefully positioned to enjoy the view whilst wallowing in the soapy suds. Downstairs is an open plan kitchen/ dining room, leading into a very comfy living room with wood burner and lots of books. Outside there is second, shaded patio for barbecues.

Eating and Drinking: We are both passionate about good food and are very keen for our clients to enjoy the best that the area has to offer in terms of food and drink. As a result we post you a whole folder of information before you travel - top tips that we have compiled ourselves after living for so many years in Andalucia. This includes what drinks to order at the bar (and how)

the best meat cuts to buy, which fish are ocean fish and which are farmed, what´s in season and food you can pick from the wild. There are also some interesting vineyards opening up in the Ronda area so we send you some information on those, with suggestions of the best ones to visit and the most delicious local wines to try. There is a great little market in Cortes where you can buy lovely, fresh produce, some of which is grown locally. You are also lucky enough to have 2 excellent butchers in the village as well as a couple of fish mongers selling a selection of fabulous fish and seafood. All of this right on your doorstep!

Historical sites of interest: Cortes is one of a jagged line of 'frontier' villages you can see on a map of Andalucia. These towns and villages once formed the boundary line between the Christian and the Moorish kingdoms that struggled for military supremacy over 200 years. The Moors were finally evicted from Cortes and moved over to the next valley where they re established their communities on existing trade routes and near natural water sources. As a result there is an enchanting string of these Moorish white villages, all with very Arabic names, that can be easily visited from Cortes.

Prior to the Christian reconquest there are remains from the times that Moors occupied this land - an old Moorish watchtower and a Mozarab church carved out of the rock, where Christians living under Moorish rule could worship their God in secret.

Another fascinating piece of history to be found in this area is the Paleolithic Cave of the Pileta with some impressive

examples of art work done by prehistoric man.

Wild swimming and a touch of art: If you enjoy wild swimming there are several options within an hour´s drive of the cottage, including the huge lake at Zahara de la Sierra. The colour of the water here is hard to describe as it is a unique shade of greeny blue which many artists have found elusive to capture. This is the most sublime spot for freshwater swimming, as well as enjoying a long and lazy picnic lunch. You can also hire canoes for 1 or 2 people and paddle across the lake.

In another spot there is a glorious pool where the water comes shooting straight out from the rock, crystal clear and icy cold. A great place for cooling off in summer! In the next valley there is a beautiful stretch of river which you can wade up and find lovely hidden pools to dive into. Nearby is a unique 'gallery' village where artists meet once a year and leave their works of art 'in situ'. Wandering around these narrow streets you need to keep your eyes peeled for statues, sculptures, carvings and mosaics.

Really pretty spot within a lovely little white village up in the hills. Everything was too hand and we would certainly wish to go again. The verandah on the first floor overlooking Cortes is wonderful to go on in the evening with bottle of wine and look across the hills. The shower room was very good and the whole property was clean and well maintained.

Recommended for two.

We lived in this area of Southern Spain for 12 years and during this time did a lot of traveling around Andalucia. Tristram worked as a freelance guide so took many groups to other parts of this region. Over all these years we never found an area with such a dramatic and varied landscape as the one we were living in. Every valley is so different from the next, and if you drive 1 hour in any direction you see countryside reminiscent of Africa, South America, Scotland and the Middle East. Sounds crazy but it really has to be seen to be believed. Being on the edge of two of Andalucia´s largest and most famous nature reserves, there is no cultivation so all the land is set aside for pasture and forest. It goes without saying that the possibilities for hiking, cycling and horse riding are endless, and the wild flowers in the spring time are sensational. This is also a very historical area with vestiges of civilisations dating from prehistoric man through to the Romans and the Moors.

Other Activities: Visiting ancient and historical sites of interest. Foraging for food from the wild.
