We fell in love with this small, charming upstate hamlet 20 years ago. For a year, four of us looked for land outside New York City, wandering through all the counties looking for the elusive magic of a country home. We found those qualities in a tiny town of Cornwallville, in the Durham valley. We bought a house that is even more than we'd hoped.
When the house next door became free, we bought that too. Our rental house was a parsonage once. It's strong and practical, and we filled it with books and dishes and quickly made it a home. It's a perfect place for a weekend, a week, a summer.

Three of us own this house together: writer, filmmaker, gardner. We bought the house 28 years ago, on one of the most beautiful days any of us can remember.
Esther Cohen purchased this chateau / country house in 2000
We looked for a year at houses in New York State, in counties that were less than 3 hours from New York City. Our idea was that we wanted a place to escape, to retreat, to plant vegetables and flowers, to read and talk and walk and hike, and to invite as many people as we could to come and eat with us.
Oddly enough, New York State (many regions, not only ours) is astonishingly and unexpectedly beautiful. We have a porch, a light yellow porch, overlooking a long green field. That porch has been the inspiration for poem after poem (after poem).
I joined a couple and their kids (two) for a ski weekend this winter, just before our big storm that dumped 10 inches of snow in nyc. We were going to ski Wyndam Ski Resort, which is a fast 15 minutes away from this house. Well - I didnt even want to go skiing - this house is super sweet with tons of room - I just wanted to hang out there. We had three kids, all under the age of 12, and they were forced to play cards with each other instead of ad nauseum wifi access for electronic game hysteria. The style of the house is eclectic aesthetically pleasing yard-sale finds, comfy throughout, tons of kitchen supplies, super nice views from upstairs bed windows, great books and magazines about, everything one needs to get back to basics, stop looking at your cell, etc. Two local dogs, the nicest cutest ever, came by regularly for some TLC. Im going back, again and again.
My family rented this house for a ski weekend at Windham Moutain. We shared it comfortably with another family. The ride to the house on a snowy Cornwalville Road was the perfect introduction to this quiet little town. As we drove up the driveway to the house, the excitement level rose. The house is located on a former farm with the accompaniments of farmhouse, multiple barns and plenty of beautiful land with the Catskill Mountains as the scenic backdrop. The home is clean and comfortable with a good working kitchen, a lovely dining room and cozy living room. The upstairs bedrooms were warm and inviting. The house has many books, games and videos which kept the kids busy when they weren't outside playing in the snow.
The ski slope is not more than twenty minutes away. We skied all day and returned in the evening to cook a delicious meal.
We couldn't think of a better way to do this type of vacation. And we plan on coming back again soon.
My wife and I along with another couple rented this house for a week over New Years Eve so we could go skiing nearby. The location is fantastic, only 20 minutes from the Mt. Windham Ski Resort parking lot. The setting is very rural, and the 30 acres on which the property is located were wonderful to walk around on days we did not go skiing. Our two dogs had a wonderful time playing in the snow and I'm sure would enjoy a return trip in the summer. I imagine that fall would be really spectacular here.
The house itself does not have locks on the doors, a little unnerving for city dwellers, but we soon got used to it. Cell phone reception is also pretty close to zero at the house but you get used to that also.
It has four good sized bedrooms and plenty of room downstairs. We were there during a particularly cold snap but the heating in the house was perfect - there are separate thermostats upstairs and downstairs and the house was always cozy despite its large size and the snow and cold outside.
The kitchen was large and well stocked with a heterogeneous collection of pots and pans, utensils and containers. In fact, it could benefit from the owners cleaning out half the contents of the cupboards. the stove is electric, the oven is hot so be careful with timing (we baked cookies, and roasted vegetables).
The house has a limited selection of video cassettes and board games so I would recommend bringing your own entertainment. The two couches in the lounge look great but are well past their replacement date. Cozy but not particularly comfortable.
On the whole this was a great house and a wonderful stay for us. It was a great property to come back to after skiing each day and the drive from New York was relatively quick (about 2.5 hours). Esther was easy to deal with and we would certainly stay there again.
We stayed at this house for a long weekend. The grounds were beautiful -- green green green and filled with wild raspberries, flowers and all kinds of fruit trees. There's a stone patio with a grill and picnic table surrounded by flowers and shaded by trees. The house is charming and well stocked with cooking supplies and everything you could need. The people who own the house are next door and were super helpful with everything we asked, including showing us the local swimming hole, a beautiful set of tiered rock pools in Catskill Creek. It is simple (no dishwasher or laundry) but incredibly relaxing. The house has a lot of history and the nearby towns are lovely. We definitely hope to come back!
Staying in this house made a recent week in the Catskills a heavenly experience. The house is comfortable and relaxing, and the setting is so beautiful and peaceful. I rose early and found beautiful spots for meditation until the rest of my house awakened. I cooked a lot of dinners and found everything I needed in the well-stocked kitchen. The owners are gracious and delightful.
