Casa Della Torre is within an hour drive of Florence, Pisa and the famous seaside resort of Viareggio with its annual Puccini summer festival at Torre de Lago, a must for any opera fan. The beautiful walled city of Lucca is just over half an hour away. The hill village of Castlevechio, which this forms part of , is the central village of ten picturesque hill villages which form the Dieci Castella. All now have UNESCO World Heritage Status and should be visited. Castelvecchio itself boasts the Dieci Castella's tenth century Romanesque 'cathedral' while the village church sits above a recently discovered and restored crypt whose walls are covered with 16th century frescoes. Castelvecchio has three very good yet reasonably priced restaurants, a small shop, a post office and a bar with a view to die for. Walking within the village is a taking a step back in time with ancient fortified walls and breath taking views. Indeed walking anywhere in the Dieci Castella is highly recommended

Ski: Abetone is a small ski resort in the Apennine mountains , an hours drive from Castelvecchio. The resort covers all ranges of ability from the novice to expert. This resort has hosted Italian world champion skiers in the past.

Castelvecchio

Our family including three grandchildren stayed at Casa Della Torre for 2 weeks at the beginning of August 2012 and we all had a really wonderful time. Whilst the accommodation as described on the Web site is outstanding with every little amenity provided the thing that really made the stay so enjoyable were the owners Alfiero and Rena. Without intruding they were on hand to help and advise whenever needed and nothing was too much trouble for them to make our stay an enjoyable one.

The house is located in the heart of the village and not far from the piazza and Bar Marina. It has a small patio area out front with chairs and table, where we have enjoyed many a glass of local wine. One important facility is the automatic washing machine that was a life saver when staying with children.

The area is exceptionally beautiful and not too difficult to reach by car being approximately 10km from Pescia.

We clearly enjoyed our stay as we went back in November 2012 and plan another stay in April 2013.

We had a fantastic time staying in this beautiful medieval hill top village in this lovely traditional village house. The house is very comfortable and cool, as its a traditional old building with thick walls and shutters, so you come back to a lovely cool house at the end of a hot day sightseeing. It has an open plan kitchen/dining room and living room on the first floor, 2 comfortable bedrooms on the top floor, 2 bathrooms and a utility room. There's lovely views from all the windows in the house. The house is at the top of the village, so there is a bit of a climb to get to it, 5 mins or so from where you park the car at the bottom of the village, but it means you are not on the main thoroughfare and its a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the little terrace at the front of the house, which is covered with vines so is cool and private. There is a bar in the village which has a little shop attached to it, where you can also order fresh bread which is delicious. We also liked the local restaurant, you can easily walk to it from the house.

The owners are extrememly helpful and kind and although they don't speak much english and we don't speak much Italian we managed to get by. Alfiero brought us lovely fresh produce from his garden, plus there was a welcome pack in the house for when we arrived which ensured we had enough supplies for an evening meal (with wine) and breakfast. We felt very welcome in the house and the village and loved the little streets packed with gorgeous flowers.

We explored the surrounding area and loved Lucca with its amazing city walls, would highly recommend hiring the bikes and cycling round the city on the walls, our kids loved it. Plus Lucca has so much to offer, fantastic buildings, churches, squares, delicious ice cream and fabulous shops and restaurants.

We also went to Pisa, it is of course packed around the main area by the Leaning Tower, but as you wander into the city and explore the streets around the student area its surprisingly quiet, with nice little cafes and restaurants with reasonable prices. We would also recommend Pistoia, a nice town which is smaller and less busy but has great squares, restaurants etc.

The immediate area around Castlevecchio is also lovely and we explored some of the other medieval hilltop villages nearby, went into the local town Pescia a few times where there is a large supermarket where you can find everything you need plus local wines.

We loved our stay here.

Delightful house in charming mountain village

We stayed in ‘Casa Della Torre’ in Castelvecchio at the end of May/beg of June 2012 and found it to be a delightful house in a charming village just as described. The house is a typical village house which is beautifully furnished in the antique style, is well maintained and has a fully equipped kitchen. In fact the kitchen proved to be the hub of the house when indoors. The beds are comfortable, there is plenty of hot water and the house has a warm and welcoming feel about it. Out of doors there is a charming terrace garden with table and chairs and a pergola to provide shade from the hot sun. Although the house is surrounded by others, it is very private and not overlooked.

Alfeiro, the owner of the property, is often living next door and he and the villagers are friendly and helpful. Alfeiro meets you on arrival to transport your luggage in his 3-wheeled Ape up to the house, as all four wheeled vehicles park on the perimeter of the village. Alfeiro speaks little English and we speak little Italian, yet we were still able to converse and he is keen to make your stay a pleasant experience. He was born in the area and appreciates it's beauty and tranquillity.

It is most certainly an area of outstanding natural beauty with lovely walks to the other villages in the Dieci Castella and a short drive takes you to Lucca (a medieval walled city) and Montecatini (a spa town with a funicular railway). We could recommend a walk round Lucca in the parkland on top of the walls before exploring the city further; and also a visit on the funicular railway up to Montecatini Alto.

There is a welcome pack at the property awaiting your arrival but we had pre-arranged to eat in the local Bar Marina on our first evening and the meal was delicious. They have a small shop with an extensive stock of goods and a terrace with an amazing view down the valley. All in all, we felt welcome, enjoyed living in the house and soaked up the atmosphere of the village. We would be pleased to return some day.

Owner's Response: Norma and Haydn thank you for the recommendation, you were our first guests and we aim to make everybody's stay a most memorable one.
