CASA DA ADEGA

Sao Luis Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps up to 5, plunge pool, quietly situted in 30ha of breathtaking countryside

This unique place is situated in a private property of 30ha, in the quiet village of Troviscais approximately half an hour’s drive from beautiful golden sandy beaches and close to picturesque fishing villages and beach towns such as Vila Nova de MIlfontes, Zambujeira do Mar; Porto Covo, Sines and many more.

This country cottage sleeps up to five people, ideal for families or groups of friends. Vast gardens ideal for al-fresco dining where one can sip a glass of local wine by the plunge pool in one of our garden hammocks or relax on one of the sun loungers. Also perfectly safe for children or pets to run and play.

The Southwest Alentejo and the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, where The Cerca Houses are situated, is the part of the Alentejo facing west, confined by the Atlantic Ocean. Its length with more than 100km of sea coast extends from Sines, in the north, to Burgau, in the south (Algarve). The Southwest Alentejo and the Vicentine Coast Natural Park is the best protected European coast line in terms of unique species of fauna and flora, therefore being visited by many zoologists and botanists from all over the world. Another kind of rarity are many species of birds and also otters, being the only place in Portugal and one of the last in Europe where it’s possible to find them in a sea habitat.

The beaches all along the coast are another of the big attractions, being much requested for the practice of water sports, and are considered as the best in the country.

Casas da Cerca can offer you a choice of onsite activities such as bird watching, canoeing, fishing, horse riding, cycling, and lovely walks in and around our village. How about a romantic picnic with a river view or a visit to the windmill, one of the last working flourmills in the area?

The River Mira is a 1.5km walk away from the property with lots of spectacular wildlife to experience along the way. This welcoming and somehow mysterious river can be very creative too as it was in 1965 one of the sources of inspiration of the famous “Yesterday” from the Beatles.

At Casas da Cerca we provide bicycles, fishing equipment, binoculars, picnic hampers, and bats and balls in all the houses.

The vast gardens are ideal for families with children and animals as we do accept all pets who are more than welcome to sleep with you in the house.

The picturesque Fishing village of Vila Nova de Milfontes can be reached within half an hour’s drive,

Vila Nova de Milfontes is also situated within the Natural Park. Famed for its vast golden sandy beaches one can spend relaxing days at the beach or even take advantage of various water sports. There is a wide range of Restaurants, cafés and bars for all tastes. There is also a good selection of supermarkets, shops and a fresh fruit and fish market open most days of the week.

Nearby there is a large selection of small cities, towns, villages to visit with various attractions including, roman ruins, safari park, reservoirs, lakes, go-carting, zoo, paint balling, paragliding and much more. Numerous festivals and saints days throughout the year providing wonderful traditional entertainment for all ages.

We now have a fresh catering service available on request, ideal for when arriving home from a long day at the beach, a good selection of traditional meals delivered right to your door.

This beautiful and untouched area of Portugal has plenty to offer weather you want a quiet and relaxing or adventure packed holiday. For more information please take a look at our website www.casasdacerca.com.pt.

My name is Graça Jalles, I'm Portuguese and in 1998 returning home after a long period living abroad, in Macau, south of China, I've chosen to live in the Alentejo (South of Portugal).

I’ve always loved the country side and particularly this part of Portugal. Here I run a Rural Tourism, Casas da Cerca, which evolved from the reconstruction of ruins that existed in the property.

Being myself an Architect it was also a challenge and an opportunity to be able to do the reconstruction projects myself, especially because I've chosen to do it in the traditional way of building in this part of the world, the earth construction.

I’m very fond of music too having travelled around Asia in a Portuguese Folk Group.

Last, but not least, I love to meet people that really share my love for nature and the Tourism have given me that chance which I’m very grateful.

Graça Jalles purchased this farmhouse in 1999

Casas da Cerca was a “meant to be” process. The first goal, being an outsider, was to find a place in the country side. Casas da Cerca was there waiting to become what it is now. Ruins reconstructed in the old traditional way of earth construction, situated in one of the most protected areas of the Natural Park and as a Rural Tourism for everybody’s enjoyment in a peaceful and controlled way.

Hard to find charming house, a bit expensive

  • 2 of 5
The location was hard to find and a meeting place in Troviscais would have been nice. The maps provided were not very useful.

The house is very nicely redone and is great for a couple or a couple with young children. The location is very quiet and peaceful, but you have to drive a fair bit to explore the region. a 20 minutes drive is required to get groceries and 40 minutes drive to see the beaches in Vila Nova de Milfontes. The house itself is in a small valley and has no real views.

Overall the cost was a fair bit too high for the location/ facilities compared to other area in Portugal. This house in another location (up the hill) would be a better rating!

Owner's Response: Alentejo is considered to be one of the most (if not the most) uninhabitable region in Europe (less people per km2).

One of the main characteristics of the Alentejo, and what makes it so special, is precisely being uninhabitable and the distances between places and facilities.

“Casas da Cerca, Nature Tourism”, fit those characteristics fully.

One can not have the city in the country side and vice versa, especially when we are talking about a House that is situated in Alentejo as described above, in a Natural Park and in one of its most protected areas, very close to the river (to be know as one of the few non polluted in Europe), and surrounded by the best panoplies of habitats that nature can give you.

“Casas da Cerca, Nature Tourism”, is situated in a confined spot of a 30ha property. One can have a lot of nice views either in Casas da Cerca itself, or just by walking along from the House to the River (15 minutes walk).

It's very easy to get to Troviscais, if either you have a Map of Portugal, or if you follow the descriptions on Casas da Cerca Web Site. There is a meeting point in Troviscais.

Customers are always told, by email, to call the House Owner, the sooner they arrive in the Village, so that they can be guided to “Casas da Cerca”.

In the House there is all kind of maps explaining ways to take you to some of the interesting and useful places around.

There are two Cafes and a small Grocery in the Village of Troviscais (1,5Km from Casas da Cerca).

The prices are according to the specificity of the place and they fit the average prices practice by other Tourism in the region.

The House Owner lives in the place and is always available for guidance to customers.

Casas da Cerca are situated in The Southwest Alentejo and the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, in one of its most protected areas.

Casas da Cerca distance 1,5km from the Village of Troviscais. Also distance 22km from Vila Nova de Milfontes, the touristic village by the sea, from where you can have access to various beaches along the coast, 8km from the village of S. Luís, and 15km from Odemira.

Casas da Cerca are three Houses (Casa da Adega, Casa do Tanque e Casa do Pomar), situated in a peaceful place of a 30ha property, near the river Mira (15 minutes walk).

Casas da Cerca is a kind of a retreat place. You can get in touch with the silence here in a way you thought it didn’t exist anymore. It’s perfect also for outdoor events in connection with that silence.

Presently there are Summer Workshops being held at the place under the theme “The Art of Slowing Down” and as described below. For more information you can go to Casas da Cerca Web Site www.casasdacerca.com.pt

Notes:
The roads that lead to Casas da Cerca are dirt roads, so city cars should drive slowly. The Headquarters are near but not visible from Casas da Cerca. Close to the house there is a plunge pool. Specially in summer time, one be aware of the mosquitoes generally early in the morning, and in the evening before dark. In winter time early in the morning, can be very cold outside because of the frost, but becomes normal again as the hours go by. The house has two floors so infirm must be aware of this fact. 'Casas da Cerca' is part of a bigger property of 30ha, called 'Herdade de S. Nuno', so the private outdoor space around, is plenty. Also from 'Casas da Cerca' one can go to the River Mira, which is probably the only non polluted river in Europe, and take a bathe there. The River distance 15 minutes walk from the house. Currently there are Summer Workshops being held at Casas da Cerca 'The Art of Slowing Down', not interfering with the quietness and the privacy of the place.
