I've lived for 20 years in DC area, and for 8 on Capitol Hill. I worked at the Library of Congress (9 years) and other government and non-profit arts organizations. I love all the free arts and culture in DC! I'm happy to offer bike tours of Capitol Hill.
Jo Rasi purchased this apartment in 2004
This house (walking distance to tourist spots and more) is a rare find in DC: a corner property with no abutting houses on three sides, so lots of windows that are open to light and air, and surrounded by a large yard and patio. The enclosed yard has an organic garden-- help yourself to all kinds of herbs and more while you stay. Bikes, parking, lots of closet space, washer-dryer, and walking distance to so much to do and see.
Large gorgeous patio for grilling (gas grill) and eating outside; safe well-lighted neighborhood; strolling to parks, restaurants and the National Mall; high ceilings; big windows; lots of flowering trees and great gardens.
This is a very nice place. The owner is so sweet! The place is beautiful. It looks like an interior decorator did this. We had a couple small rare repair issues that were taken care of immediately. it's just a short hike to the subway. The Safeway grocery store was on the way. I wouldn't use that grocery store during rush hour because they don't give any extra cashiers. Overall, We will stay here again if we come back to DC.
The apartment was clean, well kept and had all the facilities you could need or want. Jo the owner was very accommodating and there to meet us on arrival. The area was quiet, very near to Eastern market and the Metro but also a walk able distance to the Capital Building. Coming from the UK we have to rely on what the listing states and we were not disappointed in anyway. When we return to Washington again we will have no hesitation in booking our stay at this property.
We had a WONDERFUL holiday in Washington made all the better by our stay at HomeontheHill.
We rented the upstairs unit and it exceeded our expectations. The location was great (close to shops, Metro, etc) and it was quiet at night. Jo was a great host and went out of her way to address any issues we had and provide us with area information and a parking pass for the week. We also felt very safe in the neighborhood and there is a Safeway Grocery store about 5 blocks away. It was a perfect week and we will return on our next visit to DC.
We rented for a week and met Jo the first morning we were there. The apartment is in a nice and very safe neighborhood. Snow was even arranged for us that weekend! :) The location is literally minutes from anywhere you want to be in D.C. whether it be 8th & I, the Capitol, downtown, Reagan Airport, or the freeway. There is a full kitchen and a laundry with full sized machines which makes living easy.
Plenty of room for personal space. Good water pressure for shower. Nice private yard. Good parking for DC.
Jo was the perfect host! Very generous and thought of everything we might need. The place is very well stocked, close to everything, and like being at home. There were 6 of us (2 adults and 4 children). The place slept 5 of us very comfortably but we brought an air mattress for a 6th person and it worked out perfectly!
I just spent eight nights in the second-floor rental with my husband and two kids, ages 12 and 14. I highly recommend it. It's clean, sunny and exceptionally well-appointed. The high-end kitchen has olive oil, condiments, sandwich bags, spices, a dishwasher -- everything you need. The rental also has an iron, a hair dryer, a washer and dryer, a lovely private patio and even parking if you need it. Two chairs in the living room fold out into twin beds. Jo was terrific to deal with.
We had a blast riding the bikes over to Capitol Hill and around to some of the monuments. (Note: nearby East Capitol Street has a bike lane all the way to the Capitol.) They were great for reaching monuments that would otherwise be a long walk, such as the Jefferson and FDR memorials.
It's fun to "live" in a neighborhood among locals. It's a real respite at the end of a busy day. It's slightly far from metro stops -- about a 15- to 20-minute walk through a nice area to the Eastern Market Station -- but if you get a Smartrip card, you can also use it on buses from just a block or two away. They zip right to the Capitol, the Ford's Theater area and other sites. We ended up using a combo of bikes, metro and buses and got around great. The rental also has a Safeway about six blocks away. And try the pizza at the takeout place just a block away -- it's good and very affordable.
Above all: This place is a terrific value. For the price of a moderate D.C. hotel room, you get a whole apartment in a nice, quiet area with a kitchen, outdoor space and use of bikes. Being able to make some of your own meals will save you a fortune -- D.C. restaurants are spendy. You can't beat it.
Historic landmarks, coffee shops, cafes, open-air markets, Eastern Market, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Senate buildings, museums, monuments & exciting neighborhoods of shops, restaurants, theater, galleries, bars and more at Barracks Row, H Street, Eastern Market & Pennsylvania Ave.
