Guestbook comments from the owner
From the first moment we arrived we loved this guesthouse, high on the hill of Mount Pleasant and with breath-taking views. We would recommend it to anyone. We chose to "hedge our bets" with a 4-day stay at The Old Fort and a 5-day stay at the Bequia Beach hotel, so that we got plantation style character as well as a bit of hotel luxury during our time on Bequia. The Old Fort was better than expected. Clearly this is not 5-star luxury, but the bedrooms are beautiful, spacious and have everything you could want - and it all works. We had a gorgeous Caribbean-style four-poster with the ubiquitous mosquito net, plus two sofas and a little kitchenette. Our daughter's room was also very attractive with its dark wood and white nets over the bed. They look like rooms you might read about in a novel. Even the wifi was reliable (and that can be a problem on Bequia). You can choose to eat in, at their small dining area on the verandah where crickets and birds serenade you under the moonlight (ahhh!) and they will cook excellent meals to your request, within reason. Our only slight quibble was that it was quite a task to find out how much anything cost - there are no price lists! So we approached each meal with trepidation, unsure how much we were adding to our bill. In fact, the costs were in line with a meal in a normal restaurant in town, though we thought the wine was a bit more expensive. The pool at The Old Fort is fabulous, with flat sunbeds which are fixed in the shade, and some deckchairs in the sunshine. Note to Quirin from my sunworshipping daughter though - some proper moveable sunbeds would be nice!...

Review on Tripadvisor
While exploring the island, a few weeks after their arrival to Bequia on Christmas Eve 1978, Sonja and Otmar Schaedle stumbled upon a lonely spot above the sea - a place with a glorious view over the Grenadines. Formidable walls, ancient water cisterns and heavy foundations - all abandoned!
The discovery haunted them. When they returned to Bequia the following year, they were in love with the island so much that they had the idea of moving there for several months every year during their long summer holidays. After contacting the family which owned the ruins and estate, they were able to purchase the property.
A few years later, excavation began and many more ruins were uncovered - a sturdy gateway with protecting flanks, a huge oven and a cellar. The first European settlers in the Grenadine islands were French. Local hearsay indicated that there had been a plantation on the site. Sure enough, the original French family name of the former owners and a map dating back to 1763 were found in old documents.
The challenge was obvious. The restoration of the building had to grow out of the old ruins. To match the traditional style, the same beautiful stones were used, as well as timber from the local forests. The arches, cisterns and the stone floors had to be rebuilt by Bequia’s skilled craftsmen, while using imaginative reconstruction, based on how the original might have looked. Clearing of the property ended in 1982, while the construction of the buildings was finally finished in 1986.
Up to this day, the tower of The Old Fort can been seen crowning Mt. Pleasant Point. It is surrounded by shaded terraces and large gardens. Guests enjoy the glittering sea below and the emerald islands stretching outward to the south, including the little sister island of Mustique and distant Grenada. Little changed from times gone by with The Old Fort still being a truly magical place like it was generations before.
To find something special, to discover the extraordinary, one has to search for it. And there, lies the secret of this island. Visitors do not just arrive in Bequia, they discover it like an amazing treasure.
The Windward Islands, especially the tiny Grenadines, are renowned as one of the world's most beautiful holiday destinations. Bequia is a jewel and is situated within this chain of islands, located west of Barbados. It is part of the State of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Bequia provides a unique atmosphere that blends total relaxation with a wealth of interesting activities. Here there are no crowds but a very special lifestyle which brings people together. Bequia welcomes visitors as part of the community and expect to be treated as a guest and friend, not just a 'tourist'.
