The Mediavalle and Garfagnana area: This area is one of the greenest of the entire Tuscany: chestnut tree is the most common one. Chestnut has always widely used in the traditional kitchen of garfagnana and still today it is used for making bread, pies and cakes. Also There's also a local brewery where beer is made out of chestnut.
Medieval villages like Ghivizzano, Barga, Coreglia Antelminelli, Castelnuovo Garfagnana (all reachable in 15 minutes by car) and many other smaller ones are a witness of the importance of this valley in the middle ages, where all pilgrims coming from northern Europe and going to Rome had to cross Garfagnana and Mediavalle. This explains the presence of some fortesses ( Verrucole - 40 minutes by car) as well as the very high amount of medieval churches, pieves, sanctuaries and hermitages ( Calomini, 20 minutes by car)
Activities: The area of Mediavalle and Garfagnana has plenty of pathways. Some of them are important also for historical reasons, like the ones starting from the village of Borgo a Mozzano (reachable in 10 minutes by car - booking required) which go through the fortifications of the Gothic Line built in 1943-44 by the germans, and the Ariosto Pathway (25 minutes by car), starting from Castelnuovo Garfagnana and leading to the fortress of Montalfonso.
Others, are more focused on nature, like the Pathways of the Moro, which starts from Sillano (50 minutes by car).
The Grotta del Vento in Vergemoli (30 minutes by car) is one of the most interesting of Italy. It is possible to choose between three paths(1, 3, or 5 hours long) that lead through natural caves.
