Charming & Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was charming, very comfortable and full of rustic charm for our short stay. It was perfectly clean, very cosy and well maintained with lots of attention to detail by the owner. Communication with the owner was excellent throughout. We hope to stay there again for a longer period at some point in the future.

Unbelievably lovely Dorset cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Monk's Cottage was the most memorable part of our first visit to England! We enjoyed every moment of our trip, but it was the part I think we will remember the longest! The cottage is warm and quaint and you immediately feel as if you have stepped back in time to an earlier, more peaceful time. The meticulous restoration that has been done to the cottage however, brings it up to modern day comforts in a way that allows you to have every convenience you would need in a holiday retreat. Besides being incredibly adorable, the cottage also provides a perfect location from which to explore nearby Shaftesbury (Gold Hill!), Salisbury, Stonehenge, and the not too far off Jurassic Coast! And if you should need advice, information, or directions to any of the nearby must-sees, there are numerous brochures, maps, and booklets on the cottage's bookcases to assist, not to mention the hosts themselves-who are happy to help! And if you just feel like having a truly relaxing holiday, with no additional travel, there are many novels and DVDs tucked away on shelves to assure you won't be bored! I just wanted to stay there forever and become a reclusive, but content, author, gardener, or day-dreamer.... Monks Cottage is truly a wonderful find---we hope to travel back from the U.S. again very soon!

Monks Cottage, Woodyates, Dorset

  • 1 of 5

The listing was seriously over optimistic. This property was very damp with areas of mould on the walls. It was allegedly upgraded to a high standard.

The window frames were mouldy and the lavatory expelled water from the seat fixings when flushed.

For a propertyy advertised as "suitable for the infirm" the stairs to the bedroom were steep and my wife could only manage them with great difficulty (we are both 63).There were cobwebs on the rafters & corners in the bedroom. The owner met us on arrival & offered a dehumidifier. He was then away in London.

The property affected my wife's chest and general health & we abandoned the styay after only 5 nights of a planned 2 week stay.

I would not recommend this property. It was quite the worst I have stayed in in 35 years of self-catering.

Great for that get away from it all break.

  • 4 of 5

A great, welcoming & comfortable little cottage. just what we wanted for our short break.

We wanted a base for the nearby steam fair which was really fantastic. but the added bonus was the lovely walks right on the doorstep, which we found from the maps left for our use in the cottage. A warm welcome from the owners, lots of nice touches such as wine, milk & fresh eggs on arrival. We would definitely recommend the cottage for a short break.

Monks Cottage- our find of the year!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Monks Cottage. It is in such a peaceful location and central to loads of things to do, yet is equally suited to a complete hideaway! I think this is a real gem of a find and we would recommend it's tranquility to any one wanting a great welcome and comfortable holiday. The wood burning stove makes for a very warm cottage when the weather is (at the moment) typically English.

Thanks Clyde for another great holiday!

A beautiful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The restoration and extension to provide a galley kitchen and bathroom are lovely and fit in well for this listed building. The cottage provided a very peaceful retreat. The welcome we received from Clyde was great plus the unexpected bottle of wine, fresh eggs and pint of milk!

The weather was good enough to enjoy brunch sitting outside in the small yet delightful garden attached to the cottage. In the evenings it was very romantic to have logs to burn on the wood burner.

Clyde was very helpful in providing maps and suggesting places to walk. We had two beautiful walks, one to Gartson Woods and the other around Martin Down Nature reserve.

We will definitely return for another visit!!!!
