Beach:
The beach at Cullen is a magnificent sandy shore with a diverse array of natural phenomena to explore. There are huge rocks for climbing or shade, rock pools with sea anemone, beautiful views out to sea and over the bay together with caves to explore. You can even walk round the point to the fabulous Bow Fiddle rock- shaped by the sea over thousands of years to reassemble the musical instrument. You can stop of at the links golf course club house for a drink and/or a meal. The more adventurous can make a barbeque either on the beach or further round the headland with the views back over Cullen. From the house you can walk in either direction along the coast- either on the cliff tops or along the shore. The shore path leads along interesting countryside revealing some wonderful sights round each bend- sometimes it's a hidden bay, another time it might be a cliff full of birds nesting.
Dolphins:
Cullen looks out onto the Moray Firth, home to a school of around 100 dolphins. From the shores the dolphins can be seen frequently with the naked eye especially on warm calm days. Another way is to take a dolphin watching trip with one of the boats from Buckie or Inverness. There are a number of trips available and more information is given at the cottage as to how to book these. You can be very lucky and have a whole school follow your boat for the entire trip.
Whisky Trail:
Scotland is the home of Whisky and much of it is distilled in the Spey Valley which is accessible from Cullen. Some of the famous names like Glenfiddich have a Visitor Centre which often provide free tours. You can sample the produce and decide for yourself which blend or malt you prefer. In addition a visit to the Cooperage at Craigellachie reveals how to make the barrels to store the whisky. If you're not so keen on the whisky there is also the Spey Way, a walking route from Spey Bay to Aviemore in the Highlands, which is very popular with walkers.
