Salina House Rental Photos and Description

The beach is only a few steps away. The terrace offers stunning views of the sea

No other house in Salina has such a stunning position as Casa Arturo. The terrace offers a stunning view of the sea, the beach and the ‘faraglioni’ - the splendid volcanic rocks of the bay ‘Punta Scario’. A path leads directly to the beach. Salina is the greenest and perhaps the most beautiful of the seven Aeolian Islands, Salina offers restaurants, beaches, villages and authentic island life. Casa Arturo is close to the charming town of Malfa and 4 km of the bay of Pollara made famous by the film “Il Postino”.

The house consists of 2 floors (tot. 90 m2) and has two entrances. The ground floor consists of a living room, a dining table, bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet, and a small kitchen. An internal stairway leads to the first floor and on to two double bedrooms with quiet a low ceiling (2 meters). Both bedrooms has sea view. Note that the access to the second bedroom is via the first bedroom. The panoramic terrace has a set of table and chairs.

Getting to the Aeolian Islands:: Salina can be reached by ferry and hydrofoil from Sicily, Naples or Reggio Calabria. Milazzo (40 km west of Messina) is the main departure point for the Aeolian Islands. Ferries and hydrofoils leave daily and stop in several islands. It takes 1hr 30 minutes to reach Salina by hydrofoil (with Ustica Lines) and 3hr 40 minutes by ferry. In Salina ferries arrive in the harbours of Rinella or Santa Marina di Salina. Cars and mopeds can be rented here. It is possible to book a transfer with into Sicily from the harbour to the house (25 euro) and then rent a moped in Malfa. Please note that ferries are not always departing in the evening. Therefore we advice guests to book a flight that arrive early in Sicily or the day before the rental starts. The updated timetable is available on the website of the carriers companies.

(To know the website, please, do not hesitate to contact the owner).

About Salina: Salina is home to a wide variety caves and submerged volcanic craters. Salina is the most fertile of the Aeolian Islands and famous for its capers and the sweet Malvasia wine. Salina is not as crowded as Lipari or Volcano and less fashionable then Panarea, but boasts beautiful nature, excellent restaurants and shops. A bus service connects the villages and the most beautiful sites on the island. Cars and mopeds are available for rent in the main villages. There are excellent opportunities for walking. For example to Capofaro (lighthouse) that is set on the north coast of Salina and boasts stunning views of Panarea and Stromboli (on a clear night it can be possible to see its eruptions). The inactive volcanoes Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri gave the island its original Greek name 'Didyme' (meaning twins) The conical mountains are 965 and 860 metres high and provide excellent walking.

ENCHANTING

  • 4 of 5
We stayed for 2 weeks in November in this magical house and it is a cold day in February in NYC now and I am DREAMING about this house. It certainly cast a complete spell over me. Peaceful,lovely- for days all I could do was lie in bed and read and watch the sea outside the bedroom window and listen to the gentle rolling of the smooth rocks on the beach below as the waves broke on the shore. We cooked, read, relaxed, swam. We watched Stromboli send up it's steam daily. Morning jaunts into the charming village was a daily routine and EVERYONE was lovely and accomodating! We rented a scooter and toured around the island - a great place to explore. I I will certainly return and will not rest until I DO!
There was NO reason ever to leave this incredible house!

Picturesque, stunning views, perfect!

  • 5 of 5
This house made for a perfect vacation for us. So relaxing! We cooked all our meals there, spent tranquil nights by the small fireplace with the doors open listening to the surf. We walked daily to town for vegetables, wine, cheeses etc. and enjoyed sitting on the veranda looking out at the beautiful sea. There is no internet or TV which we loved! Take a break! Bring some music and some spices and have a very special week with a friend or spouse. Highly, highly recommended rental. You'll never forget it! We loved it! It was even better than we hoped it would be. For us, it was a perfect vacation in every way. Thankyou to the owners for sharing this remarkable house on the cliff of paradise. Russell.....

This house made for a lovely, relaxing vacation!

  • 5 of 5
We rented this gem in the off season. It was private, relaxing and magical. We cooked every meal in the house, and spent most of our time relaxing on the veranda overlooking the beautiful sea. The setting was stunning, and the house, perfect for us. We walked into town daily to get vegetables and bread and cheeses etc. and had tranquil evenings by the small fireplace, enjoying some wine and most importantly, each other. There is no TV or internet at the house, which we loved. Take a break! Bring some CD's, some spices, and your spouse and enjoy the most restful, picturesque and wonderful time together. Highly recommended! Russell and Shannon ( Note....because this amazing house is built into a cliff, people with disabilities may have trouble with the stairs or walk to town)

Magnificent location

  • 5 of 5
6 nights in this unique spot. The only house in the bay. Quite a walk up to town. But it was worth it. We rented a scooter and drove along the island. We liked Malfa a lot but also Rinella, a tiny town with black beach. For the beach below the house it is good to have swim shoes, because there are a loto of big stones.

Great location but some improvements are necessary

  • 4 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay on Salina Island and there is no doubt that Casa Arturo is situated in a great location. Nevertheless, there are a few improvements that could be made to justify the price tag (the daily rate was after all some 50% higher than we paid for a superior double room in a 4-Star hotel in Palermo including breakfast).

The interior is rather sparsely furnished and (especially downstairs) not very comfortable. The outside light for the terrace could be much nicer – as it is it is a very utilitarian light one might find in a garage or basement storage area. Maintenance, too could be improved: a couple of lights did not work (bulbs missing) and on the side of the house where the stairs lead down to the terrace only one light was working - not ideal when coming back from dinner after dark. Both the outside, especially around the terrace and the second floor inside could do with a fresh coat of paint.
We stayed for nine days at Casa Arturo and the supply of towels was very meager and their quality poor.

One final issue (which is probably outside of the owner's control): underneath the terrace of the Hotel Santa Isabel on top of the cliff are two spotlights, one of which directly lights up the terrace of Casa Arturo. Luckily it was only switched on a couple of evenings but rather spoiled the atmosphere when we had dinner at the terrace using candle light. I don't know if this light is on every might during the main season.

Even better than the Web Thing ; )

  • 5 of 5
Casa Arturo is indeed uniquely located – it was even better then we expected after having seen the photos.
It is worth the money: the view from the veranda and the bedroom window, the stone beach only a few steps away – and Simone who is a very nice guy and was very helpful.

It is also well located for trips on Salina and to other islands – even with the little hourly buses from C.I.T.I.S.

Only one very little thing which could be changed: A kind of protection for the veranda to not been seen all the time by the jealous people walking the little path to the beach.

The bay at Pollara (where several scenes of Il Postino was filmed) distances 4 km of Malfa and is one of the most splendid pieces of coastline of Sicily.
