Lazy Lehua Cottage was lovingly built between 2003- 2004.
The idea for Lazy Lehua Cottage was to make it a special
place for guests to stay, dream, and regroup. Focus was
on putting as much character, charm and soul in to it,
and making it a whimsical, beautiful place for everyone
to enjoy. Trees were hand cut and property cleared only
enough to put the Lazy Lehua Cottage in its perfect place.
The beautiful Ohia trees that unfortunately had to be cut
down were used for the posts on the lanais giving it,
its whimsical cottage look that blends in well with the
rain forest. In keeping in the spirit of whimsical,
some of the furniture throughout the cottage was hand
crafted; coffee table, bar top, headboard on bed, using
all local, exotic, and native woods. We know you'll
feel the magical spirit of the house when you stay here.
Enjoy - Lazy Lehua Cottage.
Our goal and our motto 'always make things better'. This is not just for our family, but for everyone that comes to stay at our little slice of paradise @ the Lazy Lehua Cottage. We love the weather, the Volcano community and the people in the community.
Joyce purchased this cottage in 2008
Have you seen the pictures? The 3 things we hear from our guests at Lazy Lehua Cottage most, 'the pictures don't do it justice', 'we wish we would have stayed longer' and 'The Lazy Lehua Cottage was our favorite accommodations'. It's proximity to Hawaii Volcano National Park, the cool temperatures, and the flora and fauna. Absolutely breathtaking!
TAT & GET taxes are already included in the nightly rate. We don't have an extra per person charge.
My family and I really enjoyed our stay at Lazy Lehua Cottage and wished we could have had more time there. It's a great home base for exploring Volcanoes Nat'l Park as well as the rest of the Puna district. The fire was very cozy during the rainy, cool evenings. It was also nice to be so close to Volcano Village where we wound up eating every night.
The house was very private and tranquil. Our children (4 and 6) enjoyed playing the games at the house and we didn't turn on the tv sets even once. The kitchen was nicely stocked, too. We would definitely go back to Lazy Lehua the next time we're visiting the Big Island.
Loved waking up to the sun shining through the many bedroom windows. Looking out and seeing giant tree ferns... green everywhere! Wonderful songs of the birds in the rain forest. Cozy gas fireplace stoves were so convenient after a rainy day hike in Midnovember. Although I never minded any rain. It is just so gorgous here! Fantastic double sized jacuzzi bathtub in masterbath (it does takes a little while to fill it properly). Compact but complete kitchen made it possible for us to prepare most of our meals right there (restaurants are another option). Farmers markets in Volcano Village on Sunday (EARLY! Get there by 7 AM as most clear out by 9) or Wednesday and Saturdays in Hilo. The produce and other foods are scruptious and the farmers are an absolute delight (My husband and I are Marin County farmers market junkies! But the Big Island farmers rock!). If you are like me and you don't like crowds, the Lazy Lehua Cottage is perfect: serene surroundings, artistic decor abounds in this gem of a vacation place. Laying in the blue hammock chair on the front lanai you will wish your vacation would never end. And you are so close to the many destinations you most definenitely don't want to miss. P.S.: Do rent a 4-Wheel Drive (not just an All-Wheel) if you are adventurous and like to do some exploring as that is required for Waipio Valley and some other areas... P.P.S.: Good healthfood store in Hilo ("Abundant Life") -- Ideal to visit on your way from the airport to the cottage (approx. 30minutes from Volcano Village). Great healthfood store in Pahua ("Island Natural Market"), slightly different direction but also about 1/2hr distance from the cottage.
Jim and I stayed 5 nights in this beautiful bungalow at the edge of the village of Volcano. Wonderfully designed and situated in the trees with lanai to catch every breeze, little stoves to heat the cool evenings. We loved ending our days roaming lava beds at nearby Volcano National Park ten minutes away with a soak in the big jacuzzi. In the morning the Apanani birds sang us awake. The whole place was clean and elegantly appointed. It's quiet and secluded but close to places to eat. We loved Thai Thai and went there twice. We also cooked in the well supplied kitchen. It was the perfect place for us. Mahalo, Joyce!
This was our last stop on our Honeymoon. This cottage was a welcome change from condos. It is so nice and secluded in your own private rain forest. It was a great place to start your visit to the Volcano National park. Everything worked well in the cottage and we didn't have any issues. Volcano is a really small town so plan accordingly. Most stores close around 530pm. We enjoyed the fireplaces and the decks. Make sure you eat at the Thai place in volcano, but get it less spicy than you are used to!
Just got back from 7 wonderful nights at Lazy Lehua Cottage. It was everything we had hoped for and more. Like others have said. Great attention to detail and so many extras for the guests. We especially appreciated the beach equipment, towels, chairs and the cooler for packing a lunch. Having been landlords for many years and many properties we especially appreciate the continued maintenance that both the owner and the caretaker have put into this beautiful piece of paradise. While the location is a little drive to some places it was perfect for us as we dislike the tourist scene and crowds of people. It was well worth the drive to come home to a cozy, peaceful and private place. Also appreciated the info from the owner on the local area, very helpful and time saving. We would definitely stay again. Thank you Joyce for sharing your gem with travelers.
Lazy Lehue was, if one can believe it, cozier and cuter than the photographs are able to show. It is beautifully decorated, blending into the rain forest that surrounds Lazy Lehue. The cottage and the grounds were spotless upon our arrival. The kitchen is fully stocked if you plan on making any meals. There are only a handful of restaurants in Volcano and only a few are open after five. The whirlpool tub off the bedroom was great for a soak after a long day of hiking at VNP (soaking salts were even provided). Even though it gets chilly in Volcano at night, we were toasty warm using the fireplace and heated mattress pad. There was more than adequate space for our belongings.
We enjoy getting up early to do our hiking in and around VNP, so being only a few minutes from the park entrance was a huge plus for us. Also, being able to see the crater's glow in the early morning blanketed by the stars was quite spectacular. The owner has provided a lot of reading material regarding the area and things to do which is very helpful.
As recommended, we bought groceries prior to arriving. We drove the southern route from Kailua and were able to stop at a few fruit and coffee stands along the way. If you are there on a Friday night, check out the Hawaiian entertainment at the Lava Lounge at the military camp. It was an unexpected surprise. Also, the Sunday Volcano farmer's market is a great experience. It is also a short drive to explore the south/southeast part of the island if you have time.
We will definitely stay here again. Our only regret was not booking another night or two. We stayed three nights and came away feeling that there was still so much more to see and do around the Volcano area (and maybe even get to read a book in the hammock on one of the two lanais).
We have stayed in many VRBO's in the U.S. and Holiday Homes in New Zealand and we have found some really wonderful ones, but my husband and I agree that Lazy Lehua Cottage is the very best ever! Beautifully decorated, attention to detail, so many thoughtful "extras," artistic touches, fresh flowers everywhere, great kitchen and three lanais, each more inviting than the one before. We loved sitting on the lanai with our morning coffee, surrounded by fern forest, listening to a symphony of awakening birds. And the jetted tub... Oh my gosh, did we appreciate that jetted tub after we hiked 15 miles over lava fields! The location, just a few minutes from the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park made it easy to view Kilauea after dark in the evening or early morning... Amazing experience! We are active vacationers and spent our days out hiking and exploring this beautiful area but Lazy Lehua would be just as perfect for someone wanting to stay in and enjoy this beautiful accommodation. Joyce was great to work with, responsive and informative. Thank you, Joyce. We had a wonderful time in Lazy Lehua!
